    Recent studies suggest that significant exposure to high levels of cyanobacteria producing toxins such as BMAA can cause amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). People living within a half-mile of cyanobacterially contaminated lakes have had a 2.3-times greater risk of developing ALS than the rest of the population; people around New Hampshire’s Lake Mascoma had an up to 25 times greater risk of ALS than the expected incidence. BMAA from desert crusts collected throughout Qatar might have contributed to higher rates of ALS in Gulf War veterans.

    That"s some nasty stuff. Sorry to say but because all these floods, algae blooms, severe droughts deniers are turning into believers. Was surprised and happy to see Rios opening ceremonies include a very educational Climate Change presentation.

    Harvest it for bio diesel ! Why sit around and cry when nature gives you a bonus. All of our oil on earth started with algae just like this, all they need to do is scoop it up dry it and press into oil.

    Jeez, CBS. Way to brush off the cause (sugar agriculture) wirh one short sentence and play it as just "a bummer" and "oh, well."
    Jerks.

    • @MrPlannery
      @MrPlannery 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They could've spoken to someone in local government to see what they're going to do to fix the agricultural runoff or maybe ask farmers. But no.....just a bummer, no possible solution if its upsets agri-business.

      The world was a perfect place before man! Maybe I should just call it BIG BUSINESS! Destroy whatever you want for the Dollar! Last month (August 2018) Tampa Bay Municipalities released 60 Million Gallons of Raw Sewage(Human Feces) into Tampa Bay! To which it eventually flows into the Gulf of Mexico, and travels along the Gulf Stream through the Florida Keys, around the Tip to Miami, and up the East coast. It may not be the cause of Red Tide but Red Tide feeds upon it! Red Tide in the Gulf usually last no more then a month, but so far it has been 12 months! Florida's economy is based on tourism!

    Meh...Florida is a state with 20 million people, most who are pursuing the American dream of working and acquiring their share of the pie. So, in this capitalist society, the predictable result of so many people exploiting the environment to live the life of Riley is the destruction of the environment. Similar environmental problems are occurring all across this nation, all due to overpopulation. Here's my shocked-face: :O The only way to effectively address all of these problems is to implement and strictly enforce population-control policies, to drastically reduce the human population. The same policies need to be implemented on a global scale, to reduce the world population by at least half. Any other efforts to save the environment is like pissing into the wind. So, *yawn*, when you people are ready to deal with the real problem here of overpopulation...and I did my part by remaining child-free...then wake me up, and we'll get started on it. Until then...zzzzZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz.......................

    • @msfernanda485
      @msfernanda485 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think overpopulation is the problem because this algea situation did not start in Florida or the U.S. It's a "natrual desaser" if you really want to solve the problem start heading to the beach and clean up. Actions speak more than words buddy.
