  • It can be hard to tell the difference between a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) and non-toxic algal blooms or other water quality concerns. This video provides some helpful identification tips and several image examples of HABs.
If you see an algal bloom and think it may be a HAB, please submit a Suspicious Algal Bloom Report Form. Links to the form can be found at: www.dec.ny.gov/chemical/77118..... DEC recommends avoiding contact with any floating mats, scums, or discolored water.

This was fantastic! One note: though cyanobacteria individually are microscopic (e.g the Microcystis that make microcystin toxin), in cyanoHABs, during HABs they form colonies that are visible to the naked eye. These colonies can actually get very large - on the order of 0.1-0.5 millimeters in size, visible to the naked eye. Thanks for this presentation though, great great help to the public

Hello, the variety I just encountered was similar to strands of hair and quite clearly attached to the rocky bottom of a slowly trickling brook. The color was a very strange iridescent blue in direct sunlight. As the instructor stated in the video it resembled petroleum products of sorts. I was hiking with my dog and I'm afraid she may have gotten into the stuff. I have washed her off well with clean water, but I am still monitoring her behavior.
