  • Harvey Klehr, Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Politics and History, spoke on the topic of "Me and Joe McCarthy: Studying American Communism" at Emory's 17th annual Distinguished Faculty Lecture (Feb. 6., 2012).
In the last two decades, as new material has become available from newly-opened Russian archives, the issue of whether Senator Joseph McCarthy was right about communist subversion has generated a lot of controversy. He talks about that issue, as well as what it is like to be labeled a 'McCarthyite' for exposing Americans who spied for the Soviet Union.
Klehr's research interests center around American communism and Soviet espionage in America. His most recent publication, with John Earl Haynes and Alexander Vassiliev, is "Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America" (Yale University Press, 2009).
The Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series is part of Founders Week, an annual academic festival. Each year's speaker for the series is selected by a committee, headed by the chair-elect of the Faculty Council and comprised of Distinguished Faculty Lecturers from previous years. The committee is responsible for administering the annual lecture initiated and supported by the Office of the President.

@Uncle Ho @ 10:10 today’s Political democrats have pulled a page right out of the paranoid McCarthyism hand book.
Even more fascist are the New democrat actions as they have enlisted the entire media to dox those who do not think as a democrat socialist communist. They have began censorship of the most high office of the President of the United States..... McCarthyism did not go as far as the New Democrat party.
      Beginning in the 1970’s,
The New Left socialist communist began studying the Old Left.
Will we become a communist country as China or maybe Russia.
These communist have a love of for pure unadulterated Government control, freedom of speech censored for anyone who believes in, God, Country and family...
Our country has been taken over by the communist countries.
It’s old news that Moscow funds are most prestigious colleges, under the nose of a most conservative President Reagan.
      Serendipity

Didn't M. Stanton Evans, author of "Blacklisted by History : The Untold Story of Senator Joe McCarthy and His Fight Against America's Enemies," also have access to those formerly restricted Soviet documents which proved there were communist agents in the United States? In fact, Evans' book was published two years before "Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America" (Yale University Press, 2009) by Harvey Klehr,. John Earl Haynes and Alexander Vassiliev.

You are absolutely right. "Blacklisted by History" is definitive in portraying how politicians are more concerned with protecting their party's image than with rooting out subversives, especially influential subversives, who betray their country. Senator McCarthy "suffered the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" in his search for truth.

The readers of the Washington Post's April 14, 1996 issue, pg. C1, were stunned to find that one of the most Progressive authors in America, Nicholas von Hoffman, admitted that Joseph McCarthy's accusations have now been substantiated by the National Security Agency's "Venona project," which intercepted messages passed between Soviet intelligence agents in the United States and their intelligence officers in Moscow. (Human Events, March 22, 1996, pg. 5.)
Nicholas von Hoffman was an American journalist and author. He worked as a community organizer for Saul Alinsky in Chicago for ten years from 1953 to 1963. He wrote for the Washington Post. Later, TV audiences knew him as a "Point-Counterpoint" commentator for CBS's 60 Minutes and was also a columnist for The Huffington Post.
Von Hoffman continued: The growing body of evidence about Soviet infiltration and espionage shows that "Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, executed in June 1953 for atomic espionage, were guilty; Alger Hiss, a darling of the establishment, was guilty; and that dozens of lesser known persons such as Victor Perlo, Judith Coplon and Harry Gold, were traitors.

Here we are in 2021, and oh, the irony. The reason Marxism has managed to take hold in the US today is that too many Americans think as this gentleman does...that it couldn’t happen here. No radicals in America? I’d love to hear what he’d say about that today.

Shrecker is all wet about Hollywood in the 50s. 50s Westerns were more complicated than "Good Guy/Bad Guy polarization", and she didn't even mention the continuation of Film Noir and groundbreaking films like NO WAY OUT(1950).

The democratic party has never embraced the moderate forms of democratic socialism." Okay professor; what did the author of socialism say about socialism?
