Ukrainian officials in Chernihiv have told residents not to swim in the Desna River after a toxic spill last month. This video is based on the excellent reporting of Luke Harding and Artem Mazhulin in Slabyn, Ukraine, from the UK’s Guardian newspaper.
It won’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s paying attention, that Russia is suspected of deliberately leaking chemical waste into rivers. This has had deadly consequences already for wildlife within the waters and surrounding ecosystems.
Hundreds of fish, including roach, pike, carp and other species, have washed up on the Desna River’s willow-fringed banks.
“Everything is dead, starting from the tiniest minnow to the biggest catfish,” explains Serhiy Kraskov, mayor of the village of Slabyn, located in Ukraine’s northern Chernihiv region.

Where are the environmental groups? They were silent after the Kakhova dam was destroyed and they are silent now. Why? Where is the UN? Why is the RF still allowed to be on the security council? Why is Guterres silent? He seems to pick and choose which military actions he criticizes which is hypocritical. And now he intends to attend a BRICS summit. Seriously? I remember the period when Putin's Russia was conducting a hybrid war of disinformation, propaganda, agitation of ethnic hate, espionage, assassination of dissidents but focused on accusing Ukraine of being Nazis so as to besmirch their name (ideologically Putins Russia is almost 100% aligned with National Socialist ideology. ) The Left wing liberal and green left groups were completely and totally sucked in, for instance the Guardian Newspaper, which I read at the time, certainly believed the Ukrainian Government was neo nazi. Russian propaganda is very successful. In the west accusing someone of being nazi is the equal of calling a woman a witch in the 1500s; they immediately pile on thoughtlessly.
This is one reason the invasion of Ukraine was not predicted.
If you are surprised at the ecocidal, genocidal, criminal and homicidal nature of Russian warfare, you,haven’t been paying attention, ever. Probably going back to early Muscovite experience of Mongol invasion and subjugation, and learned from Genghis Khan’s horde warfare, Russia has made use of warfare against its neighbors’ lands a constant feature of its war doctrine. When the orcs invaded Georgia in 2008, they literally bisected the small nation’s territory, temporarily deploying far south of the ostensible zone of conflict in Samachablo (‘south Ossetia’), intensively bombing the city of Gori beyond the south edge of the conflict zone and then marching farther south along the Georgian Military Highway into the mountains to the ski resort of Borjomi, stopping every 500 meters to light forest fires. They burned old-growth fir forests for dozens of miles along their march.
This is the kind of country that Russia is, hating all their neighbors and sabotaging their economies and societies. The Russian aim in Ukraine and everywhere beyond their borders is economic, social, and ecological ruin. This is the country that western leaders want to prop up for fear of what might replace it when Moscow falls. I can’t imagine how a continental power could behave worse than Russia and welcome most alternatives in the near future.
The UN must declare Russia a State Sponsor of Terrorism if they want to have any legitimacy.
Russia must be possessing the very nature of Satan, which is 'To kill, steal and to destroy' but the wrath of Almighty God awaits the devil and all that has the very nature of Satan.

Essentially, the Ulus of Jochi was the state established by Jochi on the lands where russia is currently located, which is known in the West under the more common name-the Golden Horde.

Jonathan, thank you so much. You were the first channel that I heard mention this (a few episodes ago with Jake Broe) and I appreciate you dedicating this episode in full. I’m American, have a friend in Chernihiv who a few weeks ago was very distraught by this (what now? what new evil? I already hear alerts in background when we talk, drones and missiles, their flat windows were just repaired again, so much Ukrainians go through daily), many tons of dead fish and wildlife were already present upstream. I know how to scour for such news on my own also in Cyrillic and could find almost nothing. I agree with other commenter. Why isn’t this a major news story, why on earth is RF on security council, where are environmental groups. And Kakhovka Dam explosion took out a full wildlife park and so much else.

My professors said they have an inferiority complex. The Mongols swept through, made Moscow one of their bases and continued west. They encountered no organized, armed resistance until they reached Kyiv and Poland. The Mongols gave up on Poland and eventually Kyiv as both were judged too expensive to be worth conquering. Also, Russia coudn't feed itself while Kyiv and Poland were exporting food to the rest of Europe. Btw, Kyiv is almost 700 years older than Moscow and Kraków is about 400 years older than Moscow.
When are we going to hear International Lawyers laying out a legal basis for relief for Ukraine from these clear violations of International Law?
The International Criminal Court isn't the only court of law that hears cases between nation states. There are legal cases regarding water rights because water doesn't respect borders. It just goes where gravity carries it.
Moreover, the Nuremberg trials are arguably an example of the victors writing the rules ex post facto (writing the law to fit an unprecedented crime after it's over), but now? NOW they are precedents that can be cited for their legal analysis, and the RUSSIANS were judging the cases alongside the Americans, British and French (by the way, the Russian judges almost always voted for convictions).
The unprecedented legal ruling we desperately need to see is one that includes using the $300 billion in frozen Russian assets assessed as damages Russia has clearly intentionally caused. Wars can't be won with words, but they sure as hell could make an aggressor nation think twice before starting the next one.
