Some bad advice I’ve seen is “if you see a rare set you want, but it because it’ll be gone forever.” It might take a while, but there will almost always be another set pop up, maybe even for cheaper

You're young...I'm 50 and been building my collection for 40 years so it's a matter of time. If you're young, you can wait and just work, playing the fishing game searching for that next run, especially if not condition-sensitive. Me, I only buy "like new" and each hour of my time is very valuable. When I billed out as a consultant back in the late 90s, I charged $50 to $200 an hour.

Yeah if anything if you are a well read reader, following the hype and avoiding it is a good way to avoid duds. The most popular manga is often designed to cater to the lowest common denominator of taste and intelligence. That's why it's popular. McDonalds outsells all burger joints...is McDonalds even top 25 or top 50 in burgers? Not even close. Much of the "most popular" manga is simply so because the license was important to the person when they were a kid. Kids like Thundercats but it isn't exactly The Godfather.

Another big thing to note when buying in bulk is that reselling becomes much more profitable on the wallet. You have a much stronger chance of breaking even when offloading series during the "offseason" of sales compared to if you bought each volume individually.
You do take a large financial hit and a risk of buying a whole series without liking it, but the risks vs rewards isn't really close.

    • @TheMangaSloth

Now your thinking like a manga businessman! Finding deals is def real but you have to know if its something you want to do and pull the trigger. But thankfully manga is relatively easy to sell/trade which is nice!

When I peruse a bookstore for a new manga series to pickup, I tend to judge them by their covers. You can at least gauge if the art style is not your preference and sometimes can tell if it is a fantasy, period piece, or modern day setting. Though if a series I had dismissed later shows up on a Book Walker or MAL manga of the year list, I'll look into it more.
Ironically one of my most favorite manga series, Cross Game, has the some of the least eye-catching covers.

I started reading manga after watching some of the old-school anime from the 80s and 90s. I think one good piece of advice is if your friend has a decent collection and doesn't mind lending you the 1st Volume. See if you like it before you fully commit to buying it. Popular manga is fine to read but it's usually tied to Shonen Jump (nothing wrong with that). You never find obscure stuff unless you browse the bookshelves in the store yourself.

I am a person that if its cheap most of the time idc too much on the condition, unless its so horrendous that it legit has stains on it. I also love buying used manga since I can collect oldies a lot faster without worrying about major price issues. For example Jack the Ripper Hellblade. found the first 2 volumes cheap and liked it and found 3 and 5 later, but apparently 4 was freakin like 40 bucks which for a single volume that I can't even look at to make sure is good thats a heck no. Then a few days ago I was looking at amazon and saw one listed for 8 bucks, now I know about amazons reputation but if it looks good and decent I'll consider it a win, a 1-2 year hunt for a single volume would be complete

One of the biggest pieces of bad advice I see being thrown around constantly by these weirdo elitists is "dOnT bAg yOuR mAnGa iT dOeS nOtHiNg aNd lOokS bAd". Okay buddy. Bagging manga makes dusting far easier, prevents shelf wear and damage when reorganizing books (something I do ALL the time), can prevent damage from spills or other accidents if you have pets or kids, and yes, it does slow the process of yellowing by limiting the oxidation of the pages and preventing acid build up. There is a reason comic collectors use acid free bags and boards to preserve comics for decades, so why would the same not apply to manga? Manga bags cost $8-10 for 100 of them and if you don't live in an overly humid environment I see no reason to not use them. As far as it "looking bad" yeah, maybe if you're shoving them in zip lock bags? But with properly sized manga bags you barely even notice them unless you are shining a light directly at it and catching a reflection. I'm beyond sick of the elitist mentality against bagging manga.

    • @TheMangaSloth
      @TheMangaSloth  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I am on the side that manga bags dont matter and do very little (for me not in general) BUT I am 10000% with anyone who does anything to preserve there items or collection. Yes they will still yellow and turn to dust someday but if you want to do it and it helps in any way shape or form then great! At the end of the day its our stuff so we can do whatever we want with it!

Great, great vid. Agree with all the above. Some additions to you takes below, numbered in the same order as your points, from a 40+ year collector of both manga and US comics:
    1) Cover arts are just illustations, not story telling comic art. And the rest of the cover is just a graphic designer's minor contribution. None of which means crap to the story inside, which is what manga is really about. Illustrators in Japan on average don't make much money compared to top mangaka...unless you are the very top illustrator, Masamune Shirow, who is also a mangaka. Top stories feature top characters which get made into big anime...then all the toys and merchandise. The only time there is merchandise for illustrations is if it's damn near Van Gogh or Da Vinci.
    2) Usually my sense has been honed that I feel good about buying runs at a time. Too many times middle issues of runs go out of print and is out at the distributors. Even if you don't like the work in the end, complete runs sell well. Another thing you can do is hang around where people buy manga (stores, conventions, etc.) and when you see someone buying a middle chunk of a run or buying the last five books of a long run, or buying an entire run as a gift for someone, ask them what they like about it...maybe they even show you the insides of the book.
    3) I plan to give my collection to my best friend so he can sell it and pay for his son's (spoiled as he is) college. Hopefully I didn't bet on a pumpkin.
    4) The 10s and masterworks of the world are almost never be on the top 25 hottest ever. Junji Ito, who is popular now, his stuff has been coming out since the early 2000s in the US! Viz in 2001 with Uzumaki (printed in Pulp, Feb 2001) and Tomie and many of his short stories (Dark Horse via Museum Of Terror 2002). He's been publishing in Japan since the mid-late 80s but is only popular NOW, 20 years later. (I'm old) Many people passed on his stuff when it was on the shelves back then in favor of lesser works. Just as many "anime fans" and "manga collectors" pass on Akira but have the gall to say their favorite 6.5-7 manga is "the best".
    5) Unless you like to beat up your books, and I've seen at least one mangatuber who apparently does, being able to resell your stuff is a great thing. At the same time having nice books, books that you love, does something for your self esteem. If when you're poor you buy old library editions. Then later in life as you earn more money, you can upgrade to OG stuff (like a boss) or cop out and get a box set. Either way the work you love will be near you. If you have the money, buy nice stuff, it has the most resale value (usually 100% of cover price and maybe goes up and up, good longterm adult strat and builds a real collection). If you buy beat up stuff, then you're a manga reader, not really a collector, which is fine in it's own way. But whatever you do, the manga is the original work...don't buy beat up manga then waste all you money on wafer stickers, toys, statues, cards and that crap...none of that is the mangaka's original vision.

    • @TheMangaSloth
      @TheMangaSloth  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      - Yup its more advertising imo. Getting someone to go "woah look at that what is this" etc
I feel ya there I buy a lot of blobs or whole big chunks at a time after trying a volume or 2 but I also buy whole series new/used without knowing much either.
You are very kind! Hopefully your friends son appreciates that!
This happens a lot and always will. I remember the old Junji stuff when it was in softcover and thought it was mid and now its still mid but in a nice hardcover LOL ( some of his works are decent but for me most are in the 6-7 range) People say demon slayer is a 10 and everything else is crap just like back when naruto was still in print etc. Happens a lot and always will. Just hope they can open their eyes and try some other stuff to broaden their horizons.
I buy a lot of used books still but at certain conditions unless the deal is amazing. But I wont for series I like a lot or know I will keep and collect more. If not I will do what you said and sell the used lot and upgrade for sure!
Great points! You hit the nail on the head with these.

I don't get what the 2nd one means
I ofc buy more mangas when I go manga shopping because if I like the series then I have more to read of it for the week than when I buy only one.
And if I'm new to a series then I also sometimes buy 2 or 3 ecause sometimes I just don't like the first volume but then the second volume is fire
    4 EVEN MAKES LESS SENSE
EVERY POPULAR SERIES WAS ONCE SMALL, HOW DO YOU THINK THEY GOT POPULAR? THEY WERENT WRITTTEN AND THE SECOND THEY CAME OUT THEY GOT FAMOUS
And I know you're using other people's bad tips, but whoever is making those tips thinking they're good should really rethink their life

Yeah I made that vid cause I kept hearing all these dumb "advice tips" for manga collecting. Holy cow people still tell these things to people all the time. I hear #2 and #4 a lot more that I should being told to people LOL

Oh my goodness, I definitely had a knee jerk reaction to number four! 🫠🫠🫠 What *awful* advice! I think bad advice I’ve seen is that if there are scans available for a digital manga, you don’t need to spend the money on it legally because it’s already available for free. 🫠 Gee, what a great way to support the industry! 😒😠😫 Great video!

Thats a big one for sure! If you like manga so much you read scans and dont support what you like it will not be around some day.

LOLOLOL You dont know if you would like it cause you "judged"
Yeah go that route if you want to hate everything and every person cause being judgemental is not good.
BUT dont read Berserk cause its cover is trash is what your saying to people who judge it LOL

@@TheMangaSloth I mean Berserk deluxe edition is pretty good, cover is amazing, so I don't know what are you talking about.

@@TheMangaSloth and yes, I judge people by their cover, when they are heavily obese, it's big "ehhhh 🤢" for me, but that is discussion for another day

    • @TheMangaSloth

@@viktorkabrt5513 Thats not judging a book by its cover. Thats just staing a fact that someone is obese.
Now if you said "that person is obese so they must hate babies and burn down villages etc" that would be judging them since you dont know if they do that.
Berserk is great def one of the best EVER. Just dont turn into one of theose -BBB- Buthurt Berserk Babies like the naruto crowd is ughhhh lol
