9:30 no air conditioning??? I had so much air conditioning that even in the Indian Ocean I had to have three blankets to sleep, and several of my shipmates in my division had purchased Korean blankets to supplement the Navy issued ones.
All depended on were you are on the ship. The spin-49 and gyro room required cold weather greens. But the radio room was on the seventh plain, when in the IO.

@@MANTRAKKK there are many reasons why they just get rid of helis such no fuel in the vehicle, preparation, wind and more that they need to consider to make for one hour left of that airplane to last on air. This is not a game which random soldier can enter the vehicle and fly away.
I was a tin can sailor (an Adams class on the east coast, and a Sprucan on west), and we got a chance to work with Midway's CVBG (combined with ours (Carl Vinson's battle group Charlie), when we went into the sea of Japan (back when Midway was still homeported in Japan) she showed up how to deal with the Russian Navy and their interference tactics! The three Russian ships sent out to interfere all got a HOT (legal under right of way) welcome!

Our skipper was the senior DD commander of battle group Charlie (Vinson), and we would call for someone to get the May's (the Russian ASW aircraft flying out of Cam Rahn Bay (along with about four JSDN P-3 Orions (which of course look alike (except the the bulging radar dome under the belly) and since we are TAOAIR for BOTH battlegroups we were charged with getting them out of there! We would call Vinson (with her Hornets and Tomcats), and would almost universally get 'they are all plugged into the tanker, wait one....'. When we gave up, went down the flight list (to Midways Hornets (and I think Phantoms)) we would get 'on our way wait!' In one case Midways fighters were, in fact tanking (off of Vinson's KA-6's), and when we asked we got an 'ON MY WAY!' The TAO had NOT looked at the flight composition, when he came screaming over-head (about at fast as he could go) it was A-7 SLUFF with a buddy-pack installed (and the hose just being reeling in!). I know we got a low pass from SOMEBODY's Phantom (not sure whose) with the burners lit and moving at the speed of smoke! Eventually the Russians decided that Midway's aircraft in close (feet?) proximity (Midways CAG explained (one the radio) that his guys were used to tangling with the Russians and this was NOT unusual)was NOT fun. At the end of the day we were succeeded as TAO by one of Midway's Screen commanders, and man it looked like an NFL BLITZ (Midway had to suspend flight operations about half dozen times to avoid a pair of Sovremmeny class DDG's getting in her way, Vinson probably more than that (they weren't used to dealing with aggressive DD drivers like this)) Midway's DD skipper called the play and you went where he told us (I know we missed one of those guys (at 26 knots) by less than ONE HUNDRED YARDS!!!). Her DD's/DDG/ and FFG's were ALL OVER these guys after about two hours they decided to QUIT and go back to Vietnam! We (battlegroup Charlie) had tried to get rid of them for nearly 12 hours! Midway's screen had them over the horizon in less than THREE!!!
@@fooman2108 I got to her in Dec well Yokuska any way was waiting on her to come home I got the hear about everything from the phillipines ship that rammed her nere her liquid oxygen tanks to what happen with you guys I was a OS just oit of A school I do remiember alot of stuff that happened from us almost ramming the USS Barbell while unrep with the Kiska ( not sure might have been passumick ) to the USS Bellowoods boilers going off line while the Australian navy chased her in war games had to send 4 BT over to fix it for them lol and playing with the Russians when they came out to play. CIC was never boring

Like I said Midway and her CVBG were badasses! I know her FFG went by us at war emergency speed, and went BETWEEN us and the Sovremmeny one time! We asked the fig what she was doing, and she informed us that this was NORMAL for Midway's group and their job was just to get them OUT of there!
Although I’m a gung-ho American and I enjoy our navy getting so much love, I’d like to see some more attention given to british, Japanese, even Polish ships. The free polish navy did wonders in WWII for being such a small force.
well there is a lot of attention given to american navy because american's are the oly one to keep so mutch warships as museum; To give you an exemple , here in France, which is a country with a huge navy during ww2 and cold war, we have only one museum ship, a small destroyer. we used to have a AA cruiser as a museumm ship too (colbert) until it was scrapped for political reasons in 2011 so yes most intresting warship that are decomissioned and still afloat are american.
@@lepastresgentil9467 Thanks to WoWs I read about Colbert, sad that there was even a committee set up for the purpose of getting rid of it. Same with USS Des Moines when the art museum near the suggested mooring area lobbied against the ship, which also forced DM to be broken up. At least you all still have one or Richelieu's cannons.

I served aboard Midway for a few years in the eighties. By that time we had AC and curtains on each bunk for privacy. Midway's sickbay was directly below the galley.
Took my Nephew last week. Gorgeous Ship!!! Got a pic with Vern Jumper. Awesome to see the excitement telling his story of Operation Frequent Wind. Pretty damn cool!!! Also, Larry Chambers was the first black Carrier Captain.
I was stationed on Midway 1977 to 79 I worked in the Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Shop (EA04) there were still a couple of guy's still there from Operation Frequent Wind they had to push helo's overboard for this South Vietnamese Col. Land his plane with family on the flight deck they made it. If you want to see the plane it is ae the U.S, Naval Aviation Museum , Pensacola FL. I saw it when I was there Nice Museum
To prepare ANY ship for a month at sea roughly take a MONTH (not a week) it will take most of ONE week just to determine what needs to be fixed and how to do it. To resupply with take the ENTIRE crew four days (8 hours a day), just for parts and groceries (this is NOT the air wing (who would be doing their own thing)).
VF-151 1980-1983. Saw her in San Diego about 15 years ago . I ran into a shipmate that was on her in the late 50s. Oh the stories I wish I could hear from him. I fondly remember those 3 years.
You left out Midway's amazing service history. One of the first carriers to get an angled flight deck. Her flight deck went through several changes before the configuration of today's museum ship. She went from operating the WW-II aircraft you mentioned. To F-14, A-6, A-7, S-3, and E-2 aircraft in the 1980s. In a career that lasted more than forty years! Until USS Enterprise CVN-65 retired. Midway was the longest serving USN aircraft carrier. This ship pioneered all the procedures modern carriers use today.
I was just on this ship today. I've been on plenty of cruise ships that are the same size, but you cannot even believe how big that flight deck is! How 19 year olds can sleep in those sleeping cabinets is beyond me~ GREAT video!

The Midway was designed as a straight deck carrier. The Kitty Hawk was by design a supercarrier, the Midway was converted to a angled deck supercarrier in 1977. Before then, she still looked like she did when she rolled off the slipway in 1945. And i love the Kitty Haws by the way, and thank you for your service.

A friend of mine who just passed away this past weekend was stationed on the maid why are you when he was in the Navy during the late 1960s and early 1970s Midway
I remember her being pierside at the carrier piers at NAVSTANORVA back in 86, during my enlisted years. She had a prominent list, I'm sure because of her offset deck. She was decommed not long after I believe.
This is one of the reasons I really like this game. The historical information that they provide regarding the ships in game are educational and really interesting!
My first ship, stationed on board from 1984-1991! Assigned to G-3 Division Forward/Aft Bomb Assembly. Got my First Navy Commendation medal as one of the first responders on the Flying Squad to a fire followed by multiple explosions while underway off Japan. I got a lot of history on that ship!
One of these days before I die I have to make a trip back to San Diego and hopefully meet up with a few of my old shipmates and take one more stroll through her.
Seeing the Medical Department was like stepping back in time. The last time I was there I had 3rd degree burns on 60% of my body. Out of the guys injured that day I think me and the Chief Warrant Officer in charge of the Flying Squad were the only two to return back to active duty.
I served aboard the Coral Sea CVA 43 as an Electricians Mate in The Power Shop from July 1961 to middle of August 1964. Was a great experience with fond memories.
Hair raising moment when that Cesna plane landed and When I know she onced visited tge Philippines😱❤️(my country)😎💪. I'm so proud of this ship and the U.S Navy!💪😎
My father was a Plank Holder on Midways sister ship the FDR. CAG 75 in an SB2c5 rear seat radio man gunner. Sailing on her shake down cruise. On her 1st cruise to Cuba ferring planes to Gitmo, the catapult broke sending my fathers plane into the sea. This was caught on many News Reel Films of the day. Many are on TH-cam.

At 3:45, they should add a caption saying, "Original configuration shown prior to angle runway mod in the 1950s." I thought they were showing me the wrong ship at 3:45, because it was a lot later in the video that they explained that the angled runway was a modification in the 1950s.
The angled deck modification screwed up the Midway class' handling in rough seas. That happens when you increase gross tonnage 25% over the original limit! The Midways went from 45,000 tons gross to at least 57,000 tons after the 1950s refits! Carriers are naturally top heavy because of the flight deck and it's worse with the modern ships (Forrestal Class onward) that have armored, angled flight decks that are about 4.5 acres. That's about 3 football fields! Now, imagine you refit an ALREADY overloaded WWII carrier (USS Midway) with an even bigger flight deck than the 1950s refit, one almost as big as the flight decks on supercarriers! The USS Midway was the worst-handling ship in its class after the 1966-1970 refit which they did partially to make the ship compatible with the F-111B (which was NEVER put into production) and also enable them to keep the ship in service for at least another 10-15 years. They didn't do the refit on the other 2 Midway ships because of the cost overruns -- it was at least double budgeted. The FDR (CV-42) paid for that dearly and was decommissioned in 1978, scrapped fully by 1980. They did an abbreviated refit to address the deterioration of the Coral Sea in the 1980s after Reagan was elected but that ship was decommissioned in 1989 because it was worn out. Midway I'm sure was in better material condition because it was cared for and partially rebuilt but it had the handling issues because of being grossly overweight. Midway was grossing closer to 70,000 tons after the late 1960s refit. Handling-wise, the Coral Sea was the better of the 2 Midway class ships that survived into the 1990s. The Midway WAS more modern with the larger flight deck, higher capacity elevators, updated steam catapults, AND better central A/C but it handled poorly in storms. I can't imagine how much worse the handling of the Midway was after I saw footage of the Coral Sea in rough seas in the 1980s. There were times that ship's bow went UNDERWATER!!!!! Was it an aircraft carrier or a submarine?!?

Can't wait to be able to play this ship when it comes to Xbox One. My father served on the USS Midway for desert storm and golf war so it has alot of emotions for me to be able to play a ship my dad had the privilege to serve on!
How about doing one on the USS Coral Sea? She was the last of the Midway Class and slightly different in design. She served nearly 43 years and saw action in Vietnam and other conflicts. She deserves to be remembered!!!

Served o this ship during the evacuation of Saigon and watched the little plane with the family on board land. Served on her from 73-75.

Montana was not meant to counter Yamato. Montana was planned and blue printed before the US even knew of Yamato’s existence.

I was in R Division 76 - 79. She was the second of 9 ships over a 25 year career. Good ship.
I got on board in 72'. Engineering, B Div, Oil Lab, Top Watch. Did 27 months, and got transferred to the Kitty Hawk in dry dock and rode her till 77'
Love the Midway. It's one of the best things you can see on a visit to San Diego..

well there is a lot of attention given to american navy because american's are the oly one to keep so mutch warships as museum; To give you an exemple , here in France, which is a country with a huge navy during ww2 and cold war, we have only one museum ship, a small destroyer. we used to have a AA cruiser as a museumm ship too (colbert) until it was scrapped for political reasons in 2011 so yes most intresting warship that are decomissioned and still afloat are american.
@@lepastresgentil9467 Thanks to WoWs I read about Colbert, sad that there was even a committee set up for the purpose of getting rid of it. Same with USS Des Moines when the art museum near the suggested mooring area lobbied against the ship, which also forced DM to be broken up. At least you all still have one or Richelieu's cannons.

@@lepastresgentil9467 I'm surprised they didn't try to partner up as an exhibit to highlight the service of artists during times of war. Many early camo schemes were made by impressionists, and the UK once hired an illusionist to protect the Suez Canal from air attack in WWII.

Midway Sailor here. 1986-1988 with VA-115. Got to see Bob Hope for his Chistmas special among many other experiences.
I was there for that show.
I served aboard Midway for a few years in the eighties. By that time we had AC and curtains on each bunk for privacy. Midway's sickbay was directly below the galley.
I live near Boston, we have made a few trips to San Diego, each has included a visit to the USS Midway. We can't wait to visit again!
Took my Nephew last week. Gorgeous Ship!!! Got a pic with Vern Jumper. Awesome to see the excitement telling his story of Operation Frequent Wind. Pretty damn cool!!! Also, Larry Chambers was the first black Carrier Captain.
I was stationed on Midway 1977 to 79 I worked in the Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Shop (EA04) there were still a couple of guy's still there from Operation Frequent Wind they had to push helo's overboard for this South Vietnamese Col. Land his plane with family on the flight deck they made it. If you want to see the plane it is ae the U.S, Naval Aviation Museum , Pensacola FL. I saw it when I was there Nice Museum
To prepare ANY ship for a month at sea roughly take a MONTH (not a week) it will take most of ONE week just to determine what needs to be fixed and how to do it. To resupply with take the ENTIRE crew four days (8 hours a day), just for parts and groceries (this is NOT the air wing (who would be doing their own thing)).
I was able to visit her three years ago. I felt like a kid again, I was in wonder the whole time. Such a beautiful girl.
I have very pleasent memories of the USS MIDWAY. It was my pleasure to serve on her from 1960 thru 1962. I loved my time on the USS MIDWAY
I served on the Midway 85-88 worked in IM3 SHOP 8 then COMNAV Instrument shop. Shops were located on the angle deck.

VF-151 1980-1983. Saw her in San Diego about 15 years ago . I ran into a shipmate that was on her in the late 50s. Oh the stories I wish I could hear from him. I fondly remember those 3 years.

You left out Midway's amazing service history. One of the first carriers to get an angled flight deck. Her flight deck went through several changes before the configuration of today's museum ship.
She went from operating the WW-II aircraft you mentioned. To F-14, A-6, A-7, S-3, and E-2 aircraft in the 1980s. In a career that lasted more than forty years! Until USS Enterprise CVN-65 retired. Midway was the longest serving USN aircraft carrier. This ship pioneered all the procedures modern carriers use today.

The Midway was designed as a straight deck carrier. The Kitty Hawk was by design a supercarrier, the Midway was converted to a angled deck supercarrier in 1977. Before then, she still looked like she did when she rolled off the slipway in 1945. And i love the Kitty Haws by the way, and thank you for your service.

At 8:19, that is the USS Enterprise CVAN-65. Can't miss that bee hive and box. She was not around in 1945.
My first ship, stationed on board from 1984-1991! Assigned to G-3 Division Forward/Aft Bomb Assembly. Got my First Navy Commendation medal as one of the first responders on the Flying Squad to a fire followed by multiple explosions while underway off Japan. I got a lot of history on that ship!
One of these days before I die I have to make a trip back to San Diego and hopefully meet up with a few of my old shipmates and take one more stroll through her.
Seeing the Medical Department was like stepping back in time. The last time I was there I had 3rd degree burns on 60% of my body. Out of the guys injured that day I think me and the Chief Warrant Officer in charge of the Flying Squad were the only two to return back to active duty.

I served aboard the Coral Sea CVA 43 as an Electricians Mate in The Power Shop from July 1961 to middle of August 1964. Was a great experience with fond memories.

My father was a Plank Holder on Midways sister ship the FDR. CAG 75 in an SB2c5 rear seat radio man gunner. Sailing on her shake down cruise. On her 1st cruise to Cuba ferring planes to Gitmo, the catapult broke sending my fathers plane into the sea. This was caught on many News Reel Films of the day. Many are on TH-cam.

Awesome forgotten side story of the Cessna with the family needing the landing space! The icing on the cake for this ship overall!
I even worked on the Phantom that is used for the tailhook display on deck.
At 3:45, they should add a caption saying, "Original configuration shown prior to angle runway mod in the 1950s." I thought they were showing me the wrong ship at 3:45, because it was a lot later in the video that they explained that the angled runway was a modification in the 1950s.
The angled deck modification screwed up the Midway class' handling in rough seas.
That happens when you increase gross tonnage 25% over the original limit! The Midways went from 45,000 tons gross to at least 57,000 tons after the 1950s refits!
Carriers are naturally top heavy because of the flight deck and it's worse with the modern ships (Forrestal Class onward) that have armored, angled flight decks that are about 4.5 acres. That's about 3 football fields!
Now, imagine you refit an ALREADY overloaded WWII carrier (USS Midway) with an even bigger flight deck than the 1950s refit, one almost as big as the flight decks on supercarriers!
The USS Midway was the worst-handling ship in its class after the 1966-1970 refit which they did partially to make the ship compatible with the F-111B (which was NEVER put into production) and also enable them to keep the ship in service for at least another 10-15 years. They didn't do the refit on the other 2 Midway ships because of the cost overruns -- it was at least double budgeted. The FDR (CV-42) paid for that dearly and was decommissioned in 1978, scrapped fully by 1980. They did an abbreviated refit to address the deterioration of the Coral Sea in the 1980s after Reagan was elected but that ship was decommissioned in 1989 because it was worn out. Midway I'm sure was in better material condition because it was cared for and partially rebuilt but it had the handling issues because of being grossly overweight. Midway was grossing closer to 70,000 tons after the late 1960s refit.
Handling-wise, the Coral Sea was the better of the 2 Midway class ships that survived into the 1990s. The Midway WAS more modern with the larger flight deck, higher capacity elevators, updated steam catapults, AND better central A/C but it handled poorly in storms. I can't imagine how much worse the handling of the Midway was after I saw footage of the Coral Sea in rough seas in the 1980s. There were times that ship's bow went UNDERWATER!!!!! Was it an aircraft carrier or a submarine?!?

How about doing one on the USS Coral Sea? She was the last of the Midway Class and slightly different in design. She served nearly 43 years and saw action in Vietnam and other conflicts. She deserves to be remembered!!!
