I’m a professional musician, but I find it fascinating to watch people go through figuring this stuff out with no training. It’s just awesome. Sometimes, academics can get a little bit torchbearer’y about knowledge that they’ve paid for or worked hard for, but it shouldn’t be that way, so I love this stuff.

It's quite interesting how access to internet over 25 years pretty much changed how we can learn and share knowledge. One can learn pretty much anything if only for own amusement. But as always, it's the hard work at the end to bring something unique. Yes I also love all the opportunities.

When you go under "helpers" to "scale highlighting" you dont need to draw these notes. This is much more faster and looks better! And you can see your notes in every pattern you have!

This is helpful, no doubt. BUT, music theory helps really a lot. Even if you can play on any instrument you are still limited with your skill. With music theory your power as composer is really almost unlimited.

I actually learned music theory by a TH-cam channel called Busy Works Beats.
Learning theory via TH-cam is amazing. I’m a classical composer, and everything I know I either figured out by identifying patterns in stuff I had played or by watching TH-cam (I learned very simple things like what basic chords (major, minor, diminished, dominant) are and some basic modes from my violin teacher.

4:32 - That's a B diminished chord. You can use diminished chords in progressions. If used properly, then a chord progression will sound great. Diminished chords are special chords that are part of a major scale right before you start a new octave. In a diminished chord, the third note is 1 below a minor chord, while that minor chord has a note that is not a part of the scale.
You can use whatever you want in a progression. After that you need to change them to fit a better voicing.

If nothing you try sounds close to what's in your head, then your chord progression is probably wrong for the melody you're going for. Try a different chord on the part where you are stuck. Don't be afraid to change keys. Just remember that your melody has to change with it unless the notes work in both keys.
@@ofadetergentsud The problem is in your head you have a bunch of sounds, when you wrote it, probably most of the time you have to change key, and rhythm.

Hey there -really appreciate the video !!Just a suggestion :The way you have used Stem for creating scale , I've seen people use ' Scale highlighting ' feature to create Scales under : Helpers - Scale highlighting - Choose the scale mode say :Major , then again go to Helpers -Scale highlighting - choose the note say C .This will create the same result for C major scale as you did with all the cloning stuff . Maybe you shud give that a try .

Good video. Don't forget, you can break the scale if you're looking to add some dissonance or a chromatic phrase/key change.

I have learned music theory, but to create the melodies and music in fl studio using piano roll are another thing, as i have been a musician for live performance and sound technician.
I'm in a situation suffering with PTDS, and can't handle all the people anymore.
But still need to make music as it gives my life value.
And i have started to use fl studio, and are learning the features here, instead of Cubase where we did live recordings, and it's all so very different.
I have the idea´s for melodies but needed tools and guidance to get my melodies into the music without a band, and your Video are a HUGE help THANKS

If u want to make great melodies or great chords u need to learn music theory.. this type of video are enough only for beginner.. if u want to know when u can go out of the scale or out of the chords u need to help you creativity with the theory.. and if u create decisions and obligations in your process then the creativity starts to work better. If u have Unlimited possibilities u get stuck instantly, like having tons of sounds.. thats creates only unsatisfaction..

That first tip with the ghost notes is really good. I'll no longer have to switch back and forth between my 2 monitors to make sure I'm still playing in the right scale. I also do still randomly make my melodies the difference is, I do the record notes and play randomly, then find the scale and go from there. I also make sure the notes aren't off rhythm either.

Couple of other ways I use to find melodies:
1) You have your chord progression and bass notes. These have velocities that vary. Use Edison to record (no drums) and you can port that combo of notes into a channel. Move the notes into one single octave. Scale the levels. Quantize, and move it up one octave. Combine and merge notes that are on top of eachother and close by. Adjust notes out of the scale. A few tweaks and you have your lead vocals. Harmonize to taste.
2) Use the Question and Answer method. Ask a question and answer it using notes of the chords while playing. You can record your "question" and "answer" in Edison like you stated to hum it in another video. Change the Q and A to fit 4 bars.

As someone who plays piano and knows a bit of music theory, that first tip looks like a GODSEND. I know my scales, but its been a pain having to constantly check where I'm placing the note and if its on the right thing, whereas now I know I can do that and it'll be a lot easier to place in line with the note.
