    2:11:10 My favourite story about Brian Blessed was when he was in an episode of Doctor Who, back in the 70’s. In the scene he was being chased by some kind of monster, he runs up to a big wooden door in what looks like a castle, finds it locked but smashes his way through it. Someone screwed up though, and the real door hadn’t been swapped for the fake balsa wood prop. He actually smashed through it anyway, like the tank on legs he was.

      There is a similar story about Equilibrium. There is a scene where an enforcer has to kick down a door. He has to give it 3 solid kicks to get through. The way I heard it, the people who were tasked with constructing the set didn't build the door to "breakaway" standards. And the actor just beat it down anyway.

    It's important to remember that the Disney board was hand picked by Iger.
    They're essentially his puppets and won't question anything he says or does.
    Peltz is attempting to change that by getting several board seats to force a vote of 'no confidence' in Iger so that he can replace him with someone more competent.
    It's also important to note that before picking Chapek to 'succeed him' as CEO, Iger had other choices that would've helped Disney to become more successful.
    Iger chose Chapek because he thought he would be easier to control, and he was afraid the other candidates would overshadow his legacy.

    • @ian-flanagan
      @ian-flanagan ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I really don’t get those claims (CEO picking the board)… how is it possible? Especially for a company so focused on ESG (G for governance)?

    • @ClownTown15000
      @ClownTown15000 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      CEOs don't pick the BoD. You know nothing about governance, even if your intentions are good. Making points with erroneous claims isn't productive. There's enough material to persecute Iger or Disney without being objectively wrong.

    • @MirandaSinistra
      @MirandaSinistra ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @ClownTown15000
      When Iger resigned as CEO, he was immediately made chairman of the board.
      If you think that wasn't already planned months before it was announced that Iger was 'retiring' you're the fool, not me.
      Even before becoming chairman of the board, Iger had lots of influence over who the majority shareholders would pick as board members.
      In fact, one of the reasons he cited when he refused to allow Nelson Peltz onto the board was that Peltz had no experience running an entertainment company.
      Something Igers board members also didn't have.
      They clearly weren't picked for their ability.
      They were picked because they aligned with Iger's agenda and will fall in line when he needs them to.

    • @MirandaSinistra
      @MirandaSinistra ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@ian-flanagan My point is that Iger picked them by proxy.
      He's been the CEO for over 15 years, and he's 100% behind the ESG agenda no matter what.
      The majority shareholders would've been heavily influenced to back his picks for board members since Iger would know who they could count on to follow his directive.
      Which is also the majority shareholders directive.

    Edward Norton's Hulk would destroy Ruffalo's Hulk. Norton's Hulk had a LOT more rage bottled up.
    (edit: By the way, talking about the Black Widow solo movie.. Angelina Jolie in the movie "Salt" is more black widow than Black Widow was in her own movie.- If you haven't seen Salt, it's a fun one when it comes to the action. Much better than Black widow)

    • @valentinegonsalves7322
      @valentinegonsalves7322 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Fun fact: Salt was pitched to star Tom Cruise. If that had happened, it'd be just another generic action movie. That movie only worked because Angelina Jolie was in it. The plot is generic, everyone from the Russians to Liev Schrieber is a cartoon. And the climax is a B movie with bad prosthetic make up. Yet, people liked seeing Angelina Jolie be a James Bond style character.
      Also, I fully agree. Ed Norton Hulk would smash Ruffalo into paste. What's the best thing about The Hulk? Anger and rage. They turned that into a superpower. Again, the movie wasn't great. But they fully embraced the anger. There was blood in that movie. The idea of male rage is now toxic masculinity bullshit.
      MauLer is right. Ruffalo Hulk was the best in 2012 Avengers. The rest is all a joke. Especially Ragnarok and Endgame.

    If popular character publicly endorses the character Holywood wants to push, then most of their votes/popularity will transfer to the endorsee.

A lot of them seem to think that the difference between success and failure purely comes down to whether you have the right kind of pandering. After all, it requires a certain amount of self reflection and self awareness to recognize the difference between "I like it" and "it's good". There is a bit of a taboo about actors who aren't members of Equity (hilarious name) but you genuinely don't have to be. But the flip side of that is that Equity publicly attacked one of their own members (Lawrence Fox) for his political views and eventually he sued them and forced them to both pay him and publicly apologise.

    The thing about the strikes is that everyone, even the production side, could see that the idea of using AI to create things without paying the actors they are modelled on is not fair. Everyone could equally see that streaming needs proper metrics, and that hiding the numbers only benefits Netflix. The fact that these two points were hammered out quickly shows that this strike was not really about that.
    The issues were all about the unions feeling insecure post Covid and wanting to re-assert their power. And so they did what all unions do; they pushed for more benefits for members and pulled up the ladder behind them.

  • @superdave8248
    @superdave8248 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Just my two cents, but what I think happened is that as the MCU was gaining momentum up to End Game, Disney had already been taken over by progressive wokism. Marvel Comics (the comics) had been completely taken over and were pushing a female narrative and interest in the story lines of the books. And with Wonder Woman being the success that it was, those same people were pushing for the MCU to be shifted to female characters and narratives. And introducing Mrs. Marvel to End Game was their way to get their stories pushed. The COVID hit and the MCU became the M-SHE-U. But each failed project had a built in excuse for its failure.
    Now, the pendulum is starting to swing in the other direction. And Disney has a problem. They know the last six years have been a complete failure across the board. But they have no idea on how to reverse course. The smart approach would be to let the IP cool down and focus on other IPs and then do some version of a reboot. But they can't they damaged their other IPs so badly that nothing can be put in place to take over the slack.
    So I sit here and watch Disney implode. And I find this more entertaining than anything they are putting out. They forgot that Marvel and Star Wars were male dominate IPs and they took it away from their built in core audience.
    Disney, I say this all with the greatest of respect. But Iger needs to go. The board needs to go. The entire female writer's room needs to go for both Star Wars and Marvel, and Feige and Kennedy need to go to. Find people who actually care for the IPs and give them some breathing room to come up with a long term plan for the two franchises.

Neither would have stopped Marvel from making a solo film *if they wanted to.* the first film just didn’t make enough money for them to want to continue is all. Marvel can make the movie. Universal can either distribute it or pass. If they pass, the Rodent House gets to distribute. The only “downside” is having to share a percentage (whatever it would have been) of the box office with Universal, if they distributed.

    25:00 - re: having to purchase everything out there to get the story. Chris Claremont did this in the mid-80s with The Mutant Massacre over at Marvel: a single story, spread out across almost more titles than a normal person could purchase. They were aiming for the "get the whole story!" angle to drive greater sales, including major titles like X-Men and obscure ones like Power Pack. It worked then because it was a relatively new concept and an extermination campaign against mutants (X-Men was their biggest title then) captured readers' attention.
    Unfortunately it also led to "the X-Men die and go to Australia" as a pre-meme recurring joke. They threatened everybody with death but apart from obscure characters like Cypher, nobody really died--and those that did were resurrected on the third day to keep up sales. And of course, this was followed by "The Death of Superman"... who came back almost right away. There's no permanence anymore, and thus no stakes. The only thing that's changed is the medium and the budget.

    1:12:30 - you guys don't get it! Bent Key (the entertainment company filming "Snow White and the Evil Queen") is separate from the political Daily Wire. All they want to do is tell the story as it was written!

      But they cast Brett Cooper so obviously there was some back and forth.

    I don't know if this is too late a recommendation, but a documentary on the production of your movie would be amazing, probably too late now if you don't have the footage, but maybe an idea for your next one 😊

    Original Star Wars was al about personal growth.The interaction between diagonal characters and the way they did overcome their differences and learned to work together, but also learn from and trust and love each other.
    New Star Wars has no learning curve but simpleton solutions. Bloody awful .

    A Young Avengers film? 🙄 I never liked the YA comics due to the fact they had Captain Marvel Jr in the line-up. I feel the same thing regarding Spider-Man aka Tom Holland. Both are over-rated and quiet frankly need# to stop. I’m hoping that the strike at least is the beginning of the end of Hollyweird. In the 90s, Marvel like other comic book media was few and far between. Yes, the movies and shows where silly, with bad special effects, and questionable scripts. But we all enjoyed them. So when we did see them on TV we where excited. The fact that Marvel and DC is saturated in every piece of media was their down fall. Remaking the same story line over and over again, was getting old five years ago.

    1:13:00 Concerning "politics in entertainment" ... you have to divide between SPECIFIC political issues and GENERAL "concept" issues, because the *MUTANT REGISTRATION ACT* storylines are always a part of the X-Men ... but they can easily be translated to gun control and other "the state has lists of its citizen's preferences" things that can easily come in an authoritarian future. Thus "absolutely NO POLITICS" is the wrong mindset (and this is why I have started disliking Ethan van Sciver years ago, because he is too narrow-minded to see this from the easy and popular example above).
