This is very interesting footage for my research for the Evolution of Style series I am working on. I am hoping to cover some key Euwe games and then start looking at their first world championship encounter between Euwe and Alekhine (1935). It really brings history to life to see this sort of footage. Thanks and best wishes, Kingsrusher

I, Dutch and amateur chess player, had never seen this footage before. It is great to see how two great sportsmen show so much respect to each other. Aljekhin by praising his opponent publicly, after having underestimated him; Euwe by granting the ex world champion a quick rematch, something that did not always happen in those days, and maybe knowing he had a good chance to lose his title again.

Never thought I would ever see footage of the mighty Alekhine like this and Euwe of course. Brilliant, thanks Endspiel48 you cracked it here.

Thanx a lot for uploading this historical video, i just loved to watch it!
2 things i was thinking and also worrying about while watching the video:
1.) All of the people in the video are dead by now
2.) I really miss the nice and polite language they were using that days

Both players were multilingual - Alekhine speaking French and German ( I have heard a radio interview of him in English as well, and Russian was of course his first language). Euwe speaking German in addition to his native Dutch, I'm pretty sure he knew English as well. Puts many of us North Americans to shame...

This is fantastic footage! I have never seen this before.
It would be perfect with captions.

By the way, the Budapest Gambit shown in the film was strictly for show. The opening was never played in the 1935 match. It was already considered dubious, and has remained mostly out of favor ever since the 1920s. I did find an "offhand game" Alekhine-Euwe 1921, where Euwe used the gambit. He lost.

As a lover of chess, and it's history, I find this film extraordinary film. How does one get hold of something like this.

Amazing footage. I always thought Alekhine was a surly and ungracious character, possessive of the World championship, but this footage definitely gives the lie to that. The behaviour here is impeccable.

Euwe played the Budapest Gambit (1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e5) at the 1:38 mark. You don't see that much anymore...

Aah Amsterdam! What a town. There is a place called Max Euwe plein where people like to enjoy chess in summer playing giant plastic pieces.

After Dr. Eeuwe says he admires Aljechin and was honoured to play against him, Aljechin responds: Mister World Champion you are my friend, and will always be my friend.
Edit: I just realized Patrick Put already answered that question. Thank you youtube for not putting the comments in chronical order, but according to importance .. :-/
Also Kasparov just tweeted a link to this video !
