Hephaestans are Vulcans (as in, from Star Trek). Hephaestus was a Greek god, whose Roman counterpart (similar domains, powers, etc.) was named Vulcan. I love that they did this. 😀
"Black Pudding Heavy Helping Vol. One" has a lot of interesting/goofy classes like "Barbarabunny," "Star Wizard," and a class that is just an eyeball with arms and legs. Thay can be plugged into any B/X style retro clone.
The Phase Elf is actually the rules for Elves from OD&D, which had to chose to be a fighter or a magic-user in the morning (and then switch their HP, Atk Bonus, Spells, etc.) :)
Great zine! It really helps push the idea that we're really in imaginative control of our old school characters and brings me back to the early 80s making my own character designs.
I like taking the races and just turning them into classes. The old BECMI halfling with some tweaks is sort of a ranger, elf is a bit like a druid, that sort of thing. Then people can play whatever they like with an expanded class list, though it takes a bit of work.
Great vid. Always wanted a list of all the OSE classes. Please post your document! I tend to limit this for players though as otherwise it becomes a tyranny of choice.
I think Dragonborne should go into a barbarian like rage near treasure. Their draconic heritage to covet precious metals, gems and magic items is a yin to the yang of breath weapon etc.
I've been interested in OSE for awhile now. It does look like a very solid game. Unfortunately their shipping option for Canada is prohibitively expensive and the core books seem to be perpetually out of print. PDF currently on sale (July 2023) ay Drive Thru RPG, though.
I found a PDF of Issue 0 of CC on Scribd. Get a trial membership and you can grab it there. Great video! I've been playing OSE and loving it. It's definitely not your nephew/niece's D&D haha. It reminded me of the disheartening days of 80s early 90s roleplaying where your character's survival was never guaranteed. I had a cleric last a whole two sessions! I played him as frantic and insane the second session as he witnessed half the party get slaughtered by skeletons, and then saw the dead come back to life to attack the remaining party! A tough call for a cleric to watch. And there was a new cleric in the group that was all righteousness and pomp and I played the disdain I felt for that character as I knew the evil in that dungeon was well above our capabilities. My frustration with the new members grew as they ran through the dungeon like it was Christmas Land and the only other character from the original party was wandering around pretty shell shocked. And then to see his impotent rage when he slashed his two handed sword through a ghost to no effect was priceless. Eventually the undead version of the original party caught up to us and I was taken down by two members of the former party. It was grisly and doom-laden. It was more MÖRK BORG than even MÖRK BORG! Fantastic session and I'm eager to roll up a new character and get back into the game!
I've found CON and DEX to be the secret critical stats. Maybe you can get by with player skill with any other stat but the loss of HP over time and the increased AC will kill more toons than being weak, oafish, simple or dumb.
Welp, wish I got Knock when it was at my local game store. I looked at the website and it will cost about $45. I know it has a lot of material, but that is way too much for a zine. For now I think I'm just gonna skip that part of the video. Also, I can't do pdfs. It's a pain to print or even read them on a screen.
@@JocularJunctionHonestly, too much to try to figure it out. I barely have the energy for the print games I have. I would rather just find the stuff that is actually in print then to hunt down kickstarters.
1:08 wtf are those Carcass Crawler zines? I know that issue 1, 2 and 3 are out, but none of them have that cover. edit: Kickstarter exclusive... I hate gatekeepy stuff like that.
That's definitely not gate keeping. You had the ability to get them if you backed the kick starter. You and me didn't, so we didn't get them. They didn't just hand them out to a couple of dudes and just tell you to go f*ck yourself. Also, it's just art, not like they just didn't release the whole thing, it's called an incentive.
@fufu1405 then it's not a damn insensitive. That's like saying Ford is gate keeping because they could build an exact 1918 model T again just because we can't get that year production in 2023 or any other product that was made for a limited time. At this point, that term has nearly lost all meaning because if you can say that about a special cover that they promised to people who put their money and loyalty on the line and it was made good by them, then what isn't at this point. You still can get all the information in each magazine. You just didn't get that rare cover because they made an agreement that this would be a one-off thing special for people willing to take a risk that it may fall flat on its face. I personally own a few things like this that are 1 in 150 or 1 in 1944 but that's because I put something on the line, why should you benefit when you didn't. Remember a lot of these things fail so it wasn't 100% guaranteed that they would even get this stuff.

I love OSR content and hope hit gets more mainstream!
Same. I've been running DCC for the past year really enjoy it. Also Goodman Games is so good to their DM's with free swag.
I share your enthusiasm for OSE, sir! Also, that thumbnail is world class.
Haha thanks
15:18 the X files theme bit gets me every time 😆

Gotta catch ‘em all.
This was literally the video I was looking for a month ago but couldn’t find! Perfect
The Beast Master: "Sic 'em boy"
"Ah, but sir; all pilgrims share a deep love of life; especially their own!"

Great video ! Ever see the labyrinth lord class compendium by Spahn? Those are really cool. And a good way to get variety out of race as class

More vids, pleeze! Love your stuff!!!
New one this Monday!
Super easy to make your own especially when you play race as class.
Knock #4 Kickstarter just funded!

I missed the Kickstarter. Is there any options to get the Kickstarter only Carcass Crawler zine?
These all look fantastic! Very excited about Gavin Norman's Dolmenwood (to be released soon I think). Any chance of running this when it comes out?
I'm pretty excited for Dolmenwood too! I'll be sure to take a look and maybe I'll stream an adventure.

Their core books are sold out, but their box sets are still available as of a couple weeks ago.
If I don't have the Advanced Fantasy Rules and I only have the Classic Fantasy Tome, will I be able to pick up CC01 and run the classes as-is?
I believe so! The advanced just combines race and class, you should be able to run them as is in the zine.
Sucks you can't get CC00 if you missed it.
Google is your friend
Shhhh…it’s on Scribd

Try and wait for the next issue on Kickstarter. You'll most likely be able to grab back issues too.

@@kuriboh635 Ah yes, because they used limited materials and it was first come first served. Nothing stops them from printing a damn Zine.

@@kuriboh635 I was under the impression it was exclusive content. It's just the cover? If so, then it's not a big deal.
