In the comments, I've read a few valid interpretations for Roger's behaviour in this scene (1, he's trying to stay sober; 2, he's not willing to open himself up to love), and I agree with them. I think there's another element to remember, which I haven't read yet in the comments: he doesn't want to give Mimi HIV. He wants to tell her that's part of his rejection ("I should tell you, I should tell you"), but ultimately he can't. But the subtext / meaning of his line "I should tell [her] " is: "I know it seems like I'm rejecting her without cause; maybe I should tell her the reason." And then he decides it's not worth it. His HIV+ status is also why he says, "Another time, another place, the words would only rhyme, we'd be in outer space" and, especially, "our temperature would climb, there'd be a long embrace." He's saying that in other circumstances, if he wasn't HIV+, they could have a relationship.

My favorite part of this movie is this one... Don't get me wrong the entire movie is great and I love all the characters-actors/actresses but these two and this part are hands down my favorite...

That's not the point of the song. She just wants his love, which he definitely feels, but won't give her 'cause he's afraid of putting her through what he went through when his girlfriend died - and also because he doesn't want to deal with her being an addict, which his old girlfriend also was, and which can also result in him losing her.
They are definitely my favorite couple and this is the second most beautiful song in the whole movie. Her part is just....INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL

Mimi's part was so influencial in me making up my mind in breaking up with my ex because I had feelings for another girl. Hurt like hell but was the right thing for both of us. Fast forward 5 years and I'm still with the same girl I left her for and she's in a happy relationship ,and we appreciate what we had and understand it made us who we are today.

I love this song. they do it well. There was always one thing about it that bothered me. She's trying to seduce him, she has a HIV and she's not warning him at all. I know he has it and she hasn't found that out yet, but at least he's trying to avoid it. Maybe irresponsibile is just part of Mimi's character.

I use to love this song growing up and I use to imagining myself singing to Mimi's part to a guy. After a couple of years not listening to this song, I have found myself a Rodger without realizing it. I dated this guy for 4 months and out of the blue he just stop talking to me. Part of me feels like he was scared of our relationship since it became long distance and he was scare of loving me to much because he didn't want to end up hurt. If a guy ever says he's "scared of loving you to much" it's because he wants his options open. There is no end to the love I have for my wife. I can never love her too much. You were given a line that is tacky on his part. He didn't know how to break up with you and made it seem that you'd be responsible for it ending. In other words, he gets what he wants while you take the blame for his wanting to date other girls.

I never understood why everyone in this scene seemingly sides with Mimi... a 19 year old stripper who is addicted to smack, and can't even afford to feed herself. She essentially breaks into this dudes apartment, who is an ex-addict, and tries to convince him to go out and get drunk and do smack with her. Then all the others turn up and none of them are like "you're a smack head, probably not any good for him, please stop." 😂 I don't understand.

@@bmags4188 Yeah, that's what I thought too. The whole point of Light My Candle is that they have this insane attraction to each other from the get go. Out Tonight just cements that, and Mimi is so close to getting Roger right where she wants him, until she takes out the drugs and that's what spurs him into rejecting her. Another Day is Roger shoring up his self preservation.
No one is siding with Mimi because she's an addict. They're all telling Roger to stop being numb, or angry, or scared and stop hiding in the loft: he has to keep living, even if he's going to eventually die from AIDS.Mimi just represents that.
On a different note, I would probably side with Mimi too: I mean, she's the one in tears staring at Roger in the most absurd balcony scene ever since Romeo and Juliet, singing at this guy who's just telling her to go away because he can't even.

It's not really about the drugs. It's about Roger who has been in loft for a year and not living his life. That the whole point of him singing another day at same time of them singing no day but to day. He keeps saying maybe tomorrow and they telling dude not now.
Roger is completely right. He’s saying come back when you’re not all wired to sleep/use with me and if you still care about me another day I’ll know it’s real. The only part he’s wrong about is denying how he feels about her. Mimi’s ideals are right but love is equal parts immediacy and long term.

ughhhh i NEED A RENT SEQUEL another musical movie. the only thing i would suggest is more dialogue this time... i know it’s a musical and the music isSOO GOOD and we can keep the same amount of songs BUT we need more dialogue, they sang literally almost the whole movie. Nevertheless I love RENT and I love this movie regardless

This is what a musically I mean you watch cats and that's complete music there's no talking in that one. But if you don't like musicals and don't watch him but stop complaining about it because you can't change what the music was about inside you're doing a disservice for the guy who wrote the play in the first place. Look this is what always bug me about you guys. The fact that you guys asked so entitled the fact that they need to change it to show your own preference makes you so entitled that you could just don't buy the movie don't buy the ticket so you can go watch the movie or rented or whatever but the fact is you saying they're complaining about a show the play or movie design it's ridiculous. Because actors are not exactly how you picture or how they supposed to act just like me Thursday people complaining about endgame and especially cap tomorrow the fact that the actress who plays her did a great job is it because she happened to have a personality that nailed roll.
