Denji actually give up his desires for someone elses in Part 1: The trip with Makima. He stayed and couldnt understand why he gave up that trip just to take care of Power due to her PTSD.
I think thats more ironic for Denji, as he realises he has to be there for her and does so and yet doesnt even acknowledge it. Its like he is being controlled without it being acknowledged as something significant and shows that he doesn’t understand familial love and then loses her. He no longer had an outlet for showing his love to someone until Nayuta, and I guess shows that love in Power’s place. He doesn’t understand but he knows anyway, just how you sacrifice for the ones you love.
Hi I am a practicing psychologist. A couple of notes for you for future videos using psychological concepts. your use of the id/ego is technically correct but missing a lot of context. The id goes beyond biological impulses, but is also responsible for deep desires and wants such as lust, violent impulses, etc. The superego is what regulates these impulses, making sure we don't steal when we want something or murder when we get angry. essentially, it houses our morality. The ego is the surface level, your conscious, thinking, problem-solving brain which uses information fed to it from the superego to make decisions. There are differing levels of strength of each psyche between people. for instance a superego ruled person will be very cautious and thoughtful, an ego ruled person will be headstrong and confident and an id ruled person will be emotional and impulsive. Essentially, Denji's merging with the chainsaw devil can be interpreted as a metaphor for maturing into your ego. The steps and feelings he experiences can be interpreted as a warped allegory for puberty, developing emotional and sexual awareness. the chainsawman form represents giving in to your id, your lowest impulses of lust, violence and self gratification. The Denji we see in the manga in part 2 is more akin to the maturity of a young adult searching for meaning and purpose.
One of my favorite moments in chainsaw man is when the party asks his age and he says 16 and they all realize that hes like a literal kid. And that theyre not gonna challenge it. They have a child soldier knowingly now. They have to confront that no matter how bad the demons are theyre still offering this kid to die with hope theyll live. With hope to not confront makima about how fucked it is to make this kid into a monster.
A slight correction: Denji earning money to help Nyuta isn't the first time he put someone's wellbeing above his own desires. Back in part 1, he also does this with Power. After the incident where they all went to Hell and encountered the Darkness Devil, Power was traumatized. And Denji had the opportunity to either go on a vacation alone with Makima, or to stay and be with Power in her time of need. And in that instance, he chose Power over Makima. He chose to put his own desires and wishes to the wayside in order to help a friend in need.
Denji is an interesting case compared to other protagonists. He wants to be liked, loved, and adored, but as a devil hybrid, he gets his power from being feared. As part of Public Safety, he uses his devil powers to kill other devils, which gets him that love and adoration. The closer he gets to his goal, the weaker he becomes. As he becomes weaker, he's not able to work towards his goal.
Great video my only thing is Denji isn’t completely selfish in part 1 as in the running with the darkness devil Denji basically took care of power after that encounter. She was soo terrified that he slept by her side and even bathed her almost as if he was babysitting her.

No. If you prefer Anime, even in the Anime he states it CLEARLY to Katana Man. He went from barely living, to living in a House where he can eat a Meal like Peanut Butter and Jelly. Even states he'll do anything to maintain the life he has and gain more. His True Goal is: He just wants a Life worth Living. Makima is an Antagonist because she wants the Chainsaw Heart, and by doing so she needs to make him have a Life that isn't worth living.

This may just come out as a hot take but: Denji is the Shounen version of Guts. I mean there are so many similarities between them like how Denji killed his father because of his deadbeat abuse and so as Gambino who would go extremely tough on him and abuse and borderline sell Guts in terms of Grooming. Makima felt more like Griffith based on if you look at it through a bright angle.Like for example Her manipulating Denji controlling his life just like How Griffith did to Guts. Guts and Denji Are similar in realistic ways as well(Explained in this video) like how Denji didn't know what to do in his life and how to use it so he allowed Makima to control it without actually realizing it.Same with Guts and Griffith. Denji and Guts are also similar in situation wise as well.Like how None of them had that one friend who accepted them and looked at them as a regular human being other than a tool.Excluding Pochita, because hes a dog. As someone who only recently read through chainsaw man you absolutely nailed exactly why i fell in love with the series. Denji doesn't want to be god or the strongest or anything like that, he just wants to live like everyone else. One thing i wish you had brought up was how proud Denji is of being chaindaw man, he reminds me of myself and probably millions of others who grew up wanting to be a superhero so of course being a 16 year old kid with zero friends he immediately wants the world to know how cool a superhero he is but is constantly stopped by people either trying to control him or who are trying to warn him of the consequences.
I know some plot points from the manga but I’ll say I’m anime only because I practically am with a couple spoilers under my belt. I knew since episode 2 or 3 that I loved denji as a main character because he doesn’t really give a shit about people’s opinions and he does whatever he has to to get ahead. When he fought his friend/supervisor and just repeatedly kicked him in the balls it really solidified denji’s character. It told you exactly who he is.
I love Denji, one of my favorite characters hands down. He’s a person who was never allowed to dream or want, and he finally got it. Living through hell to finally get the chance to live, means a lot to me
I’m late but ong denji is the best MC rn that’s why chainsawman is my favorite anime after only watching season one before reading the manga, I even have it before Jjk which is my third favorite anime. I just relate to denji so much and also I love the power system the plot and the action and gore this show/manga has it has all the recipes I love all into one. Currently caught up with the manga and I’m loving every chapter I hope denji gets his dream to come true when this is all said and done
I disagree that denji is best new Gen mc. He's the one with the most unique motivations and personality but I personally find yuji to be best. I know most people don't like him because he's more somber but his goals and ideals are the most honorable, and his conviction is the best, he came into the game expecting to die as the completion of his arc
I love both characters but Denji is an objectively more relatable one in my opinion. Yuji may be more “honorable” but I’ve never felt more connected to a depiction of early teenage development like I did/do with Denji.

Ichigo does not believe in the power of friendship and Nakama. He has a very realistic view of the world. It’s just when he sees something wrong, he is gonna stop it. Especially for those he considers friends or family. For me out of the main three, Ichigo is one of the most realistic and relatable characters.

@@SaturdayNightblue yeah and while it’s not shown as much with Ichigo, because he hasn’t had a life like Denji, he’s had very much similar moments like Denji. There’s just not showed as much because Kubo is not targeting those at the moment. Ichigo at the beginning didn’t want to be a Soul Reaper. He was selfish because he didn’t want that responsibility. He wasn’t like what other shounen protagonist would be at that situation, he immediately denied it. In that moment, he was a very much human character. I will say, while the Weeb commander can be right perceptive a lot of times, he can be frustratingly dense sometimes. 😅 cause his take with Ichigo makes me want to pull my hair out.

As someone who only recently read through chainsaw man you absolutely nailed exactly why i fell in love with the series.
Denji doesn't want to be god or the strongest or anything like that, he just wants to live like everyone else.
One thing i wish you had brought up was how proud Denji is of being chaindaw man, he reminds me of myself and probably millions of others who grew up wanting to be a superhero so of course being a 16 year old kid with zero friends he immediately wants the world to know how cool a superhero he is but is constantly stopped by people either trying to control him or who are trying to warn him of the consequences.

Denji & Yuji are my current gen favourite characters
I know some plot points from the manga but I’ll say I’m anime only because I practically am with a couple spoilers under my belt. I knew since episode 2 or 3 that I loved denji as a main character because he doesn’t really give a shit about people’s opinions and he does whatever he has to to get ahead. When he fought his friend/supervisor and just repeatedly kicked him in the balls it really solidified denji’s character. It told you exactly who he is.
I love Denji, one of my favorite characters hands down. He’s a person who was never allowed to dream or want, and he finally got it. Living through hell to finally get the chance to live, means a lot to me

I’m late but ong denji is the best MC rn that’s why chainsawman is my favorite anime after only watching season one before reading the manga, I even have it before Jjk which is my third favorite anime. I just relate to denji so much and also I love the power system the plot and the action and gore this show/manga has it has all the recipes I love all into one. Currently caught up with the manga and I’m loving every chapter I hope denji gets his dream to come true when this is all said and done

I disagree that denji is best new Gen mc. He's the one with the most unique motivations and personality but I personally find yuji to be best. I know most people don't like him because he's more somber but his goals and ideals are the most honorable, and his conviction is the best, he came into the game expecting to die as the completion of his arc

I love both characters but Denji is an objectively more relatable one in my opinion. Yuji may be more “honorable” but I’ve never felt more connected to a depiction of early teenage development like I did/do with Denji.

Hey weeb commander! Wanted to say that this is a great video!! There is one small mistake though. When Denji turns into the chainsaw devil, that’s actually pochita, not Denji. It’s why he goes to get a burger, takes a girl out on a date, etc. Those are the dreams pochita and Denji discussed in the beginning of the series:)hope this helped!!

Ichigo does not believe in the power of friendship and Nakama. He has a very realistic view of the world. It’s just when he sees something wrong, he is gonna stop it. Especially for those he considers friends or family. For me out of the main three, Ichigo is one of the most realistic and relatable characters.
