Is the Ravens Offense a Sleeping Giant? | NFL Game Tape Breakdown by Kurt Warner

  • The Ravens passing offense is doing a lot of good things, but it's still a work in progress.
    I tweeted earlier this week that I was watching the Ravens pass game and although they threw for a bunch of yards, it’s still not smooth and connected. It’s kind of clunky right now. Spacing isn’t great, as guys seem to be trying to figure out where they’re supposed to be…what the with the timing of different plays. I’ve gotten a lot of feedback from Ravens fans out there like “what are you talking about?! You have no idea…everybody’s saying it’s one of the best pass offenses in the league!” Yes, they’re putting up yards…and a lot of that is because of Lamar Jackson being able to work through the issues and make plays. But I just think they have a long way to go. Mark Andrews told me a couple weeks ago that he thinks they’re a sleeping giant, and I feel the same way. They’re putting up 300+ yards in the pass game and they’re not there yet. So, I’m gonna take you into the tape and show you what I’m seeing and then you can come back and tell me whether I’m crazy or not! Let’s dive into the tape. #lamarjackson #ravens #nfl

    Appreciate this breakdown Kurt! Its incredible that Lamar is making plays when his weapons aren't executing like theyre supposed to yet. He seemed dissatisfied after the game and the tape makes that make sense, he knows that there is still much work to be done. Credit though to the o-line for holding up in pass pro and giving him the time to do what he needs to do.

    Okay I see it now & it makes more sense why Lamar was upset after the game. I knew there was still room for improvement but... not being a HoFamer... didn't see the roughness you did.
    Please do a show with Bobby Baltimore or come on The Vault. Thanks for this breakdown. I believe we'll get there too. Thanks!

    I really appreciated this; you have the time to really point out the 'refinements' that Monkin, Lamar and the receivers need to hone in on to truly become respected in the league. What may have tripped you up with the fans inre: verbiage is 'clunky'...in this "All-Or-Nothing" era of reporting, people may have thought you meant 'Monkin's offense isn't working'. That said...I respect 100% where you're coming from, and what you may be seeing and would like to have happen: A Super Bowl HOF'er seeing a talent on the cusp of greatness, and knowing that the refinements necessary sometimes have to come without the 'spoonful o' sugar'. Steel sharpens steel...thanks again for this!

    @truthbearer7891 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

    Yeah they have to clean those things up if they want to have a chance to get the #1 seed and dethrone the Chiefs in the playoffs. That poor spacing creates too many flashbacks about the previous breakdowns under the old offense. Although it's obviously a lot more motion and spacing and sensible route combos overall, its definitely still a work in progress that Lamar has severely masked. Great breakdown because he can't be expected to make heroic play to #4th and #5th read every time because the time to do so wont always be there.

These guys will get it figured out in another 2-3 games and I believe it's going to be a complete nightmare for defenders given Lamar's running abilities. I am hoping the Ravens can work a deal for Henry to improve our RB room a bit. I think Henry could make the Ravens pretty much unstoppable this season but I also don't want us to bet the future on a 30 year old RB either.

    I'm a die hard Ravens but this was an illuminating analysis. Kurt is 100% right, we're doing a lot of things well, and the Lamar effect is covering up a lot of mistakes, but the offense still isn't where it could be. This reflects OC Todd Monken's sentiment that "we're just getting started". This team, the way it is now, with a little bit more precision and consistency in all phases of the game, is truly a force to be reckoned with. Its just that consistency thing that trips me up. We'll have a game like this only to get blown out the next week. That said, I have all the confidence in the world that even if we dont go as far as we should this season, between Monken and Macdonald, this team will be a serious contender every season for the next several seasons.

    Good points on all plays. However, that last one to Gus looks like a designed RPO... Bait the LB to take a step towards Lamar as Gus goes by him. All the other routes take the defenders to the other side, thus freeing up a lot of running room. If Keaton Mitchell is the RB on that play, that's an easy 6.

  • @marcemarc6516
    @marcemarc6516 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I believe the First play was trying to get the high low on the safety, (not the corner with the flat route) with 6 man protection and the back goes play action, to chip, to check down .. I believe he’s reading deep the entire play. Safety drop to TE you take the deep in, safety drops back you throw the middle over. The backers are up because you have to respect the play action and full pass pro. Love the channel Kurt!

    The 3 things I wanna see Lamar get better at:
    1. Being able to make short outside throws to checkdowns and hitting them in their chests or hands instead of 3 yards away from them on the ground.
    2. Getting more air under the ball instead of on a rope passes that are almost always overthrown.
    3. Better timing on timing routes. Sometimes he waits a little too long for curls and whatnot. That ball should be thrown while Lamar sees the back of his receivers jersey and the ball in the air by the time the receiver turns around for his route, the ball is already there.
    Edit: I'm gonna add another. I wanna see Lamar consistently thrown the ball at least 30 times a game.

      Re: edit, no. You want Lamar to be like every other QB, and we do not want him predictable as he was under Roman. I don't want him running 100 yards or passing over 30 a game, every game. If he is doing either the team and the OC aren't doing their jobs.

    • @miwawilliams1339
      @miwawilliams1339 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Not really... the spacing issue... where Lamar to throw there... could create turnovers. Plus as he said sometimes the job is to clear out an area for someone else to get free... spacing issues get in the w way of that. It's the kind of "small" thing that could create a huge problem/ weakness in the playoffs. So... it's as important to overcome as the handoff issues. Lamar is playing elite. The rest of the offense needs to do the work to match that.

    The RB should have run a 2 step flat and they were manipulating the 2 inside LBs to get them to either come up or stay flat to hit the dig like he did behind them. I don’t agree with that assessment as the 2 ILBs were the guys playing off it was not a run to manipulate the OLB that was the bait with the guard doing a pull sit block. The pass to Mark was an option route he could read it and they were not on the same page on that play. Mark is free styling, and he did not run the correct route. But the play is also to go to Bate on the backside comeback still easy money. On that play with Mark, he should have sold the route more before breaking out, but the RB should also run a flair or 2 steps in and then out to give it more time to develop. It was a part of the game plan given late and maybe that is why but with 500+ offensive yards later are hard to argue with.
    But I do agree it is a lot of room to grow and get better, so that only means they have not reached their peak and still have a lot of runs to grow which is scary and serves to put the NFL on notice. He is right about the RB he should flair to the other side or sit for the dump or 2 steps up and out like you were running in training camp. You just tighten it up and you have the concepts that fit with the identity you want.

    This further strengthens Lamar’s MVP case. This offense can be legendary if they start clicking on all cylinders.

    The hi low was designed like that. It was man coverage single high safety over top. Zay was lamars 1st read and the safety takes mark andrews leaving zay wide open if the safety decides to pick zay up on the deep cross it leaves mark 1 on 1 with a line backer. Yeah theoretically u want to see mark get a little deeper with his route but u still have the x and y recievers 1 on 1 or u get mark andrews 1 on 1 with a line backer

  • @weewaa973

    So has mark andrews just gotten by on running random routes hoping to get open, now he’s just used to that?

    All plays aren't going to be perfect. To me spacing is all about beating the defender to create the proper spacing.

    I think u cand find a handfull of plays from every team and every game like this but essentially its a brand new wr core and only 7 weeks in what worries me is they actually looked better in the Pittsburgh game as far as routes and route concepts just couldnt catch the ball. Watch the all 22 on the chiefs games u will see some of the same stuff a couple times a game any team actually

      Kurt Warner have Real love for Lamar and wanna see him Super Bowl up....this is not about KC....THEY WON RINGS!...This is about us a d he is 1000 % correct a d I would love to see him on our offensive coach team one day.

      @VillamarDelivery I have no disrespect for Kurt Warner but he did have arguably the best wr group ever in the NFL and it is true that u will find the same kinda things if u watch the all 22 of any team any game. There was a 3 play sample size that u can find on practically any team any game that's all I'm saying

    • @shawnwines7490

      I just feel that this video disrespect our own coaches coming from a hall of famer or not when no team is perfect and all teams have some clunkiness to them even the greatest show on turf. That's why qbs sign the big deals they are essentially paid to organize the guys and overcome occasional bad routes in wich case Mr Warner did an excellent job at with the rams

    People aren't mad because you point out this stuff...it's because he only does this type of nitpicky stuff for Lamar...even on his better games.
    The Bills barely beat the giants (with some help from the refs) and just lost to the patriots...and Allen played horribly, where's the video?
    Same with the chargers, Justin Herbert has been losing games and throwing 4th quarter interceptions and not getting it done when the game is in his hands, where's the video?
    Burrow has also been playing bad and failing in the redzone with elite talent around him....where's the video?
    But its not just Kurt as we know. On a week where Lamar was literally the highest graded QB he had people asking weather he's worth his contract...And answering "NO". And Shannon Sharpe saying he judges Lamar harsher than Allen and Herbert because of his "greatness" yet when asked if he would pick Lamar or Allen he said "I would go with Allen" and doesn't even consider Lamar a top 10 QB when asked? Lol...thats what gets raven's fans mad...because he is for whatever reason is being judged differently to a different standard and they don't even try and hide it anymore...

      You’ve got a million Lamar fans in Louisville and by default we are now Ravens fans! Lamar is easily a top 3 quarterback in the league. Actually, top 2. Imagine what Lamar would do with the Bills or Eagles, scary.
