Go Be You, Josh Allen | NFL Game Tape Breakdown by Kurt Warner

  • Make some special plays but when you make a mistake, make up for it. I remember throwing a lot of interceptions myself, but still putting pressure on the defense knowing I was going to make 3 more plays to make up for it.
    Today on Studyball, we are going to take a look at Josh Allen. Now I know I don’t always have this same opinion of quarterback play that a lot of people have. A lot of people will look at stats and dictate a quarterback play based on stats. I don’t like to do it that way. That’s why we watch tape to try and decipher how well a quarterback is playing. We saw Allen’s first game against the Jets, saw two questionable decisions and everyone said “Josh Allen played terrible.” I argue that he played a good football game outside of those two plays. And I still think he has had a pretty darn good year. A mix of the little plays with the big ones. What makes him great is still his big arm and play making ability. A couple of good differences between the first and second game, with some chance taking as well.
    How do we have our cake and eat it too? It’s nearly impossible when they are going to be a couple of plays where he can’t gamble. Can you take that out of his game? He is playing better football to me. Then, once he gets creative, we have to take the good with the bad. I think he is playing really good football. #joshallen #buffalobills #nfl

      Kurt was a QB...in week one Josh threw 3 picks...one was a great play by the defence. The other two looked like he was throwing it at the defence.
      I don't know what the play call was or what the concept was...it could have been a miss route or communications...or Josh thought that he was his reciever....

    It’s the most moronic thing to me how we try to simplify the sport by looking at totalized stats at the end of the year and look for the QB who has the most TDs with the fewest interceptions and then vote for him as the league MVP. There’s soooo much context behind every play, all touchdown passes and interceptions cannot be viewed equally. Really appreciate guys like Kurt who actually break down the sport and can view the results beyond what the box score says.
    For Josh, I think the key for him to be at his best is trusting his protection in the pocket. There were times in week 1 and last year when he did have a clean pocket, but he just didn’t trust as if that was the case so he’d either be unbalanced or needlessly try to escape the pocket. Of course, that trust needs to be earned, and last year Josh had good reason not to trust his OL as it was terrible, but this year the IOL is substantially improved which should give him enough time to stay on time and on schedule to deliver darts to the open receiver. Getting the RB run game humming will be huge too, and there’s still a whole lot of meat left on the bone when it comes to utilizing Kincaid (and Knox) in the passing game. A lot of people slept on the improvements the Bills made this offseason and after week 1 those people were taking their victory laps, but I have a feeling that they’ll all be proven wrong by the end of the year.

      It still amazes to this day that Allen was so much criticized and scrutinized pre draft. yes, everyone knew he had the best arm and was physically gifted, but many teams were scared he was too raw and not polished enough to be successful at the NFL level. Remember what Allen said when Buffalo picked him? Allen said I'll make Buffalo look like the smartest people for choosing me, and boy was he right. Dude worked his azz off and now we see the results.Too this day it baffles me how John Elway passed on him when he had the chance to grab him before Buffalo. I always believed any QB drafted can be successful if they're really determined to succeed. Look at a guy like Fitzpatrick who kept getting chances and was a strong performer. Alot of it is hard work and determination to prove your critics wrong. Baker Mayfield just might save his career in Tampa after two failings in Cleveland and Carolina. Funny how things work out.

    At 9:08...Knox should have enough sense, and Dorsey should make sure he sees it next time, that when the middle linebacker blitzes that 1)it 's going to OPEN up the middle of the field, so you should go there and 2) Since your quarterback will NOT have a lot of time, so your post route means nothing. I liked your intro where you said Josh had two good games except in the first game he had a couple of bad outcomes.
    I've been making the point that the TD passes to Shakir and Davis were classic bad decisions that turned out great.

      @answeris4217 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Shakir one he was about as open as the NFL gives you...He saw it and got it there...plus there was seconds left at the end of the half
      The Davis TD looked like he was throwing it in the middle of 4 defenders. Maybe he has confidence that Davis was going to be able to make the play.
      Or maybe he looked at tape and saw that other than Marcus Peters the rest of the Raiders defence have a total of 3 career INTs and thought it was worth the risk.

    Kurt, you don't seem to admonish the defense for poor coverage techniques/schemes. Sometimes it's pitch and catch because there's poor defending. Of course, he should get credit for taking advantage of the opponents, but we're not seeing a lot of tight-coverage completions, contested catches, or amazing route concepts. He reads the opponents coverage mistakes really well. And the game tape demonstrates how little pressure the Raiders front four generated. With time, lots of folks can be good at QB.

  • @mazzvidz
    @mazzvidz 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    He didn’t make two mistakes vs the jets, he made 6 turnovers worthy plays and got away with two of them for a total of 4 turnovers.
    That ended up being one turnover too many.
    Nobody is telling Josh to stop being Josh, we just want him to stop taking stupid chances when there is no reason to.
    When your up 10 in a defensive struggle going into halftime… it is completely unacceptable to turn the ball over on 3 of the next 4 possessions and GIVE a victory to the opposition.
    I understand that it’s probably good for your view count and your wallet by pandering to the low IQ portion of the Bills fan base… the 8 non skipable adverts didn’t go unnoticed.
    However it does nothing for your credibility and even less to help Josh.
    Allen needs to listen to his coaches and coordinator and do what he’s told. That’s how he has games like he did against the raiders.

    • @tommcmasters8429
      @tommcmasters8429 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Pretty sure you should be looking in the mirror to find the person with the low football iq.
      Certainly, it was unfortunate that in the first game he ended up with multiple iinterceptions. But the decisions weren't any worse than any other game. He might have been a little off in execution. It may have just been probability. If a QB routinely throws passes that others get intercepted at a 30 % rate, it's inevitable that QB will have a few interceptions. But if you stopped Josh Allen from making those throws, he wouldn't have 1/3 of his touchdowns.
      In fact I'll argue it was his "discipline" in overtime against the Jets that directly led to the punt and the loss.

    • @mazzvidz
      @mazzvidz 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@tommcmasters8429
      No.. it was the false start on first down by Spencer Brown that put the Bills behind the sticks that caused the punt and the return.
      But that game should of never went to overtime. They had 5 possessions in the second half and turned the Ball over on three of them. He had a fumble on the fourth drive that was called back on “forward progress” when he botched the snap.
      4 out of 5 drives in the 2nd half he killed with mistakes. The fifth and final drive was the FG to tie it and go into overtime.
      All of the jets 2nd half scoring came on short fields due to Allen turnovers. Completely unnecessary in a game that you’re winning by 10, against a backup QB that can’t move the ball.
      I’ve seen all the coaches film on that game from multiple angles. On every interception he had receivers open underneath or in the flat.
      The pick to Davis, Diggs is in single coverage over the middle and Knox is all alone leaking out into the left flat.
      On the pick to Diggs he had Kincaid and Knox wide open on a mesh concept at 7 and 12 yards over the right side.
      On the fumble which set up the Jets only TD, he ran directly into the teeth of the defense before securing the ball.
      It would make sense to take those kinds of chances in a game you’re losing and need something big to get back into the game. That wasn’t the case. The Bills had the lead the entire game until the jets last possession.
      You cannot commit 6 turnover worthy plays and lose 4 of them… and win games in the NFL. I don’t care how good you are.
