There's an annoying subculture of "comedians" that think provoking a response, ANY response, is the same as being clever, that any mean-spirited act can be excused under the banner of "It's just a joke," and that criticism is censorship.

bully 101. Provoke someone until he punches you and then say why did you hit me, it was just a joke and get the guy whom you have bullied punished. provoking someone is basically asking to get punched . Don't act surprised if people get aggressive. After all it's what you want if you do it.

That is a nice prank, unless you drag it out for too long. There are people that videotape the whole thing and ask the person (usually child) why they look unhappy with it and laugh at their uncomfortable or upset face. And then, sometimes they get another gift, after about 8 minutes, which I hate because it shows that it was all done for the views.

That's pretty much the barometer for pranks; that & whether it's illegal or not is the basic standard for whether it's a prank or a crime. I am a firm advocate for prosecuting such criminals to the full extent of the law.
I imagine that compared to the costs of hiring legal defense, being criminally & civilly charged, any restitution/fines ordered, etc. will be far more costly than any financial advantage gained through doing this.

And the object of the prank should find your pranks funny the first few times, not after years of building up a Stockholm syndrome-like tolerance to your bullshit.
"Hey, lady, are you all right?"
"Yes, I'm fine. He just likes to joke that way. I deserved to be pranked. I deserved it."
"Lady, that ain't no joke like I've ever seen. I'd call the cops, but this unfortunately still falls within the limits of legal douchebaggery."
"It's funny. Isn't it? Yes, it is. Joey thinks it's funny. He put it on the internet."
"Guess it can't be that bad then. If it's on the internet."

the only time a prank shouldnt be funny to the victim is the victim is a royal douche who pulled some seriously fucked up shit.
Like when this kid at my high school 'pranked' a kid with a severe phobia of clowns by putting an Penny Wise mask (Stephen King's IT) in his locker, and the poor kid freaked out so bad he ended up in a pysch ward for 6 weeks.
Well the asshole got 'pranked' himself, when someone 'accidentally' dropped a 5 pound math textbook on his head from the top of the third floor landing.
      Very funny, haha.
Actually i should note, the both the original 'prankster' and the Vigilante Prankster ended up expelled and facing criminal charges.

A great prank that is actually a prank: If you work somewhere where there is a break room buy two boxes of a dozen muffins. (Donuts or cupcakes work too.) Hide one box somewhere in the break room and put the second box on the break room table. Through out the day pop into the break room and replace any muffins that have been eaten. Eventually someone will notice and start asking everyone where they are coming from. If they ask you pretend to not know and say, "That's really weird." Once people start noticing, start not only replacing the muffins, but putting out more muffins than there was to start with.
Great prank because, a.) No one gets hurt or upset. b.) When everyone finds out you did it they won't be mad because you bought everyone snacks. c.) If anyone eats half a muffin it looks like the muffins are multiplying through mitosis.

I really like this video. Seriously, it's not a prank if someone reacts rationally to your bullshit (thinking you're a sexual predator/thief/racist harasser). Harassing people in the "hood"? Even if the "prankster" didn't just harass black people anywhere, do they mean harassing people in poor neighborhoods? Why would you specifically target poor people?
I like pranks, but I don't actually like the ones that make people look or feel stupid. I just like it when expectations are subverted in a comical way. That, I believe, is the essence of verbal jokes as well; you're not an idiot if you don't guess the punchline right away, you are happily surprised.
Why make jokes if you don't want to make someone feel better? No need to be mean.

+hyperdeath84 Pranking is pretty low on the list. But I'd say pound-for-pound punning has to be the worst. For every stupid, mean, bullying prank there's a million terrible, non-funny puns told. And pun that works is usually just mildly funny. A decent prank that works is usually a lot funnier than a second or two of wordplay.

    • @hyperdeath84

    • @mikestone6078
      @mikestone6078 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

+hyperdeath84 Sarcasm may be the lowest form of comedy, just because pranking isn't comedy at all. The good ones are tricks messing with the mind in some way and the bad ones are just bullying or stupidity in action or both at the same time.
I'd even argue the sarcasm being comedy, because whenever there's a victim in any way, it isn't a joke anymore.

I think the best motto to consider when thinking of doing a prank is "confuse, not abuse"
Does your prank cause physical or emotional harm to the person or their property? Probably shouldn't do it
Does your prank cause the person to think to themselves "what just happened" or "what is going on"? Prank away
One of my favorite examples is the prank in jackass (not the best example but hear me out) when a tall fat guy walks into a store and asks a stranger to hold his dog. But the person who comes out is wee man wearing the same clothes and says "thanks" and walks off with the dog. The looks on the strangers' faces were hilarious!

There was one of a guy pulling a gun on his girlfriend for wanting to go out in revealing clothing. I just don't get how making a person genuinely fearful for their life like this could be considered funny, especially as plenty of people in the world have been killed by abusive partners.
Sure, the 'prank' might be staged, I don't know - but if so it's still pretty crass to depict a scene of domestic violence and call it comedy.

By the way..... this is my FAVORITE end plate you have done.... after that character has been on screen for that long, hearing that kind of condescending tone fits the video perfectly and you phrase it perfectly. "you're you're own person and I'm just a guy" you got a chuckle out of me with that one.

I totally agree with this video. For instance one thing that wasn't mentioned was the gallon smashing. I mean it's a stupid and pointless thing to do. All you are doing is making a mess that someone else has to clean up, disrupting other people and really only making a fool of yourself. There is a line between a clever and interesting practical jokes and just mean-spirited harassment, and often times too many people cross it.

Yes & no, my solution is relatively simple, practical jokes are not illegal but much of what's called practical jokes is illegal.
What should be happening is every single time these numpties do this to anyone, the victim/police should charge them; anytime they upload such crimes, they should be charged.
I don't get this, the moment you touch anyone's body without consent &/or attempt to remove any property from another's possession, you've committed assault or theft (or one of its variants).
Trust me, if one of these fools attempted such things to me, they would seriously regret their life choices! I have a giant service dog, expandable asp baton, deafening air horn, considerable experience in armed & unarmed combat...
The only question left would be will I break their arm &/or leg with my baton or the dog's teeth clamp around the "joker's" arm 1st. I'm nice though, as long as they don't resist the dog &/or attack/further endanger the dog or I, I wouldn't hit them after the dog has them. Without a doubt, the police would be called & charges pursued in such cases.
I would also charge & sue them onto oblivion for every instance they uploaded such video/images of their crimes.
To be clear, if it's just a prank without illegal acts, then I certainly would not take the above route. Pranks are fine, it's the illegal BS I am firmly against.
For example, filling someone's pool with jello or dye is not a prank, it's destruction of property & should result in the prankster being forced to clean everything up manually & pay any costs required for professional repairs or replacement of their damage.
Kissing/ touching someone or taking something without consent is not a prank, it's a crime. Putting a fake spider on a door or the like, so that the victim gets a bit scared or feels foolish is a prank (unless ongoing bullying).
It's a crazy world we live in... But all that ad revenue would not come close to the actual real life costs the offender will incur following such ill advised "pranks"/crimes.
      C'est la vie.
      Adam

Did I miss something? When did an actor get hurt, specifically soren? I can say as both a medic & person that has been injured at various points in my life, it does not help to poke that hurt spot & ask if it hurts...
Sure, professionals palpate the area but that's not to ask does it hurt, it's so we can feel the tissue & check for abnormalities. Indeed, good professionals deliberately seek to cause the least amount of pain possible.
For example, you can always tell a real decent professional from a hack or fraud about to give an injection by whether or not they pay close attention to the tip of the needle & carefully align the point of needle to enter 1st so as to cause less damage & pain.
Another trick is to lightly touch the skin with the tip of the needle & asking if they feel a sharp prick, then quickly injecting the spot they report not feeling it & is between the superficial nerve fibers. However, the best cue still is whether they properly align the needle point with the injection site.
If you are getting any sort of needle in your spine, brain, joints, muscles, etc. but they don't pay close attention to the proper alignment of the initial puncture, then immediately stop the procedure, run screaming away & find a real competent professional to do that.
No joke, the fact remains that the majority of such injections are utter failures that can & do cause serious consequences, even in the hands of trained professionals! It takes very special skills, training & ongoing practice to be able to competently & reliably perform such procedures.
As a medical professional myself & having witnessed countless such procedures &/or professionals doing such procedures, I would not trust the vast majority of medical professionals to touch me with so much as a needle!

Not saying these scumbags aren't above staging a prank but I'm pretty sure if someone tries to snatch your stuff out of your hands, that would be considered attempted theft and you're allowed to take physical action to reclaim your property on scene; in some states deadly force is considered legal.

I usually also link the Michael Carbonaro "they were crabs now they're cats" clip as an example of a Good Prank where reality was heightened and the funny part isn't that the other person is "stupid," it's how they react to this inexplicable event lol. the best real pranks are the ones where the other person can be a total champ about it and find it funny once they learn the truth. if they're upset or only relieved it's not real then like... it's just depressing IMO lol. anyway thanks for this video, it's been very useful to me for several years now!
