They look like the goats we have, or had, on the islands off the coast of Baja California. But they were introduced by Russian fur traders to have food while hunting for the california fur seal.
Interesting... The Livestock Conservancy in the US did a study on SCI goats with the University of Córdoba in Spain and apparently they're not related to any Spanish breeds as everyone assumed. Perhaps they should be working with a Russian institution instead!
@@jfm14 That's interesting. I'm starting a goat grazing company in Northern California and would like to use the SCIs to help secure the breed and because they are still very natural brush-eaters. I wonder where they did come from? Where'd the Russians get them?
A handful of very dedicated breeders are improving the breed in the hopes that more people will be drawn to them. The one near me gets at least enough milk to support her homestead and soapmaking business. They also sell for a good bit of money because people like rare, heritage breeds.

They look a lot like the Kikos that I raise, though not as large. Cool critter :)
If used seldom for meat and sometimes for milk... what is there main use? Grazing?
