I love how down-to-earth this video is; like I just moved into the neighborhood and you invited me in for coffee, pie, friendly conversation and made me feel welcome. Wonderful video!
I'm with you I sterilize my jars. I also warm my rings and lids even though it's not required anymore. I learned from my Mom and Grandma so I stick with the old school method as an extra precaution.
I can’t wait to get some apples! I am new to canning so figured that applesauce would be a good and easy thing to start with! It’s also one of my favorite things to eat so I would rather make it myself and know exactly what’s in it instead of buying it at the store.
Enjoyed the video. I'll have to look around for the book. I like well organized simple books for canning too. Btw, you made me so hungry for homemade applesauce! I could almost smell it cooking, yum. I grew up canning applesauce with my Mom. She always used Gravensteins which never needed sugar at all and made excellent sauce. Still my favorite. ❤
I was watching this video while preparing to can applesauce in my steam canner. Last year my applesauce all siphoned and made a huge mess, i refrigerated it for a few days and then ended up tossing it. So, here I go again. The first 8 pints finished and did some siphoning. My last 3 pints are in the canner now. I added a tad more headspace and have the heat on the steam canner a bit lower and checking to be sure the gauge stays in the proper zone. The first jars cooling on the counter look as though they have sealed although I heard no pinging. I am using Ball and ForJar lids. I am wondering how I can have a good seal sine there must be sticky reside on the jar rims due to siphoning. I am a nervous canner since I have only done applesauce, tomatoes and jams and lots of time passes before next canning session. Do you think leaving more headspace is ok, maybe my sauce is too thick or maybe steam canner was boiling to hard. So many variables. Thank you in advance for any tips you may offer.
It’s been a long time so I’m not totally certain but the lemon juice was just in the soaking water for oxidation browning (maybe a couple tablespoons?), I believe I put 1 cup water in the pot to prevent cooking browning?
I make my applesauce in the crock pot also don't waste the skins and throw them out you can use them to make apple jelly if you don't eat apple jelly you could always donate it to a pantry
lol i love the video, but i only eat apples or drink apple juice........ i dont like apple sauce apple pie apple crumble yuck but hey i love other fruits and veg have a great weekend hugssssssss
You add lemon juice or acid to keep them from turning brown. And the canning books tell you to water bath it. Always make my applesauce and pear sauce without sugar. That way I can use it to bake with. And I just add some sugar to taste when I just eat it.

I was happy to stop warming the lids but I did for a while after it changed 😂
@@FermentedHomestead I know it can be a hassle but I just can't shake it off my routine i guess it has to do with my OCD.
They seal better heating the lids and rings. I hardly ever have a lid failure.
Another thing, I use the sauce in place of half the butter in banana bread and it turns out lovely.
Nice! I’ll have to try that!
love your videos! you are straight to the point and YOURSELF!
That looks good! I like to use sugar free applesauce as a substitute for oil in cake mixes. I always get compliments on how moist they are. Tfs!!
I couldn’t think of the other substitute I have heard of! Thank you! I like sugar free because it’s more versatile
@@FermentedHomestead you’re welcome! Exactly!!
Thanks for sharing. i made some this morning. i added cinnamon to mine before putting into water bath.
Looks good, Thank you Anna
Thank you Marie 💜

Thank you! Going to make some now!

What a great memory to have 💜 I don’t think I’ve ever seen that variety.
Do you not have to add lemon or vinegar to the jar before canning?

I definitely need to get some apples Anna! Will be needing something sweet and healthy
It is a great thing to have!
Good video! Just a note...the bottom of your green funnel sits perfectly on top of the 1" headspace line. :)
Dud you add water to your apples? If so, how much. It looks simple to make. Thanks for sharing this
I added a cup in the beginning just to get it going. It is very simple 💜
@@FermentedHomestead Thank you so much ❤
Can you tell me how much lemon you add to water that you have sitting at bottom of pot? I know you said you dump it all out...
I’d like to see how you do apple butter.
Hi! Just subscribed! I am from Hawaii 🌺
Just canned 7 quarters of applesauce. Tomorrow I need to go to the trees and get more apples.
Do you remove your rings and wash your canned items in warm soapy water before storing?
Yes I do, I just leave them on until I wash
How much lemon juice & water do you put in your pot to prevent browning
It’s been a long time so I’m not totally certain but the lemon juice was just in the soaking water for oxidation browning (maybe a couple tablespoons?), I believe I put 1 cup water in the pot to prevent cooking browning?
What type of apples are best?
I’m not sure it matters much, I just use what I have on available
You put water in yours when you put your apples in the pot?
I make my applesauce in the crock pot also don't waste the skins and throw them out you can use them to make apple jelly if you don't eat apple jelly you could always donate it to a pantry
Woo!

Nice! Everyone has their own preferences 💜 I don’t eat them much but it’s nice to have on hand for baking
I didn't think you could water bath apple sauce cause it isn't acidic enough?
Sure can 😃 you can also pressure can if you prefer. I double checked on NCHFP and ball canning sites to make sure 💜

You can waterbath anything acidic. Fruits are acidic.

Not true, we just have better things to say 😘
