W8UZZ supplies a 38-inch radiator. I recently returned to using the Scorpion radiator and caphat. Don't get me wrong, the W8UZZ hat works well. However, speed discipline is important since the extra drag at higher speeds can bend parts over time. I lack discipline and returned to something with less drag. I need to do a follow-up video. I put the scorpion hat on my Tarheel 200a it works great on my semi! I’m looking into purchasing a new antenna and I definitely want this cap hat. How well does the antenna perform, the Scorpion supplied Tri loop vs W8UZZ capacitance hat? Thanks for the information. I am looking for a shorter solution, because the tall whip smacks way too many trees.
I haven't heard a meaningful difference on the other end of a QSO. But I'm told that extending the coil reduces efficiency. A caphat helps to extend less coil than a whip. A larger caphat extends even less coil than the tri-loop that Scorpion sells. Larger caphats catch more wind, too! So, it would seem to be a balancing act between "how efficient do you want to be" vs. "how much drag before the radiator collapses at speed?" I'm happy with W8UZZ's caphat, but consider mounting a tall whip instead since I can speed with it. HAHA! Thanks for visiting!
My radiator is 38 inches tall, which is two inches taller than the Scorpion caphat radiator. I think 36" may be better and yields a little bit of "buffer" when tuning 17m. I have since removed the W8UZZ caphat and gone back to Scorpion. The smaller caphat is easier to pack when traveling. I will still tinker with other ideas, though. Videos in the works... Sorry to hear that! I wonder if he would mail you a discounted kit with only the connecting pieces, similar to how he shipped me a 160m hat kit. The parts would ship in a padded envelope, much smaller than an assembled hat. From there, it would be on you to buy the aluminum rod from a local source, cut it to fit, then assemble the antenna. Ask him what he thinks of that idea. Good Luck!
