@@tyreeharris7214 Not necessarily. As with any Pokemon, you can just lower its health and inflict status ailments like Paralyze or Sleep to increase the chance of catching it. Mewtwo just has an incredibly low catch rate, so it's just harder to catch overall.
I know right? Was very shocked by that question. Nah man, here's a Pokemon that you will only ever see and be told about, but not ever able to capture. Would kind of make the whole "gotta catch em all" thing meaningless.
Some fun facts: Mewtwo first came to Smash Bros in Melee, But disappeared from Brawl, came back as DLC for Smash 4, and became a main character in Ultimate.
Man, after not seeing it for years and now having a much superior Shadow match up, I forgot how bad this fight was, from the animator half-assing the fight on purpose because he just did not care, and having Takahata101 voice him worse this time around on purpose because as an "Homage" to Shadow's voice in Adventure 2, and TOTALLY wasn't jumping on the rise of the Sonic Hate Bandwagon caused by a certain grump, and DEFINITELY wasn't a massive middle finger to fans. In short, this episode was a fucking joke, and an insulting one at that.
So, noteworthy thing of Death Battle The characters they put against each other are usually amalgamations of different incarnations of the same character So, Manga Mewtwo has giant spoon, anime Mewtwo can talk and mega evolve at will, and game Mewtwo just hits really really hard and is always mad but never really flies. Death Battle Mewtwo can do all of these. Also, basically any Pokémon that exists can be caught and used. There are a few exceptions like Eternamax Eternatus who is only a boss and doesn’t work outside of its boss fight because game stats and also it’s 328 feet long. For reference the Blue Whale is about 100 and is the largest animal to ever exist. There was also AZ’s Floette which is just a Floette with a different flower and an unused move attached to it. Never actually appeared in the games besides a cutscene.
And Mother Beast Lusamine, who's a pokemon/human hybrid and one of the most terrifying bosses in the series... ...until you realize you're fighting her pokemon as normal instead of her directly.

I’m not too good on cellular biology, so I’m not your guy, but it’s science. “What game is this?” This is Pokkén Tournament, a Pokémon fighting game made by the fine folks behind the Tekken series. Give it a try some time, it’s actually really good! “What kind of Maajin Buu thing is this…?” Remember Charizard’s whole “temporary mega transformation” thing? Mewtwo can activate that on its own and, depending on if you’re playing Pokémon X or Pokémon Y, you get a different Mega form. They just gave him the Y form in this Death Battle, which heavily skews his stat buffs on the special attack and speed- basically, amplifying the stuff that killed Shadow. “…gottem?” Gottem. “Was Mewtwo ever in a game where you could, like, catch him?” Yes, actually. The first games even. And plenty of others as well. Even in the ones you can’t catch him in, you can trade him in from the games you can. “50 years?” Yeah, Shadow can’t die unless killed. So, there's something very important about this show that you should know, but I don't think anybody has told you yet: the rules changed after Season 2. Actually, a lot of stuff changed. This is a pretty long, fairly important spiel, but if you want, you can just *skip to the TL;DR at the end.* So, Seasons 1 and 2 were more or less experiments by the company (which was then ScrewAttack) on a show, format, and idea that had never really been done before. The director, Ben Singer (who also voices Wiz), came up with the concept, pitched it, and was given the thumbs-up. A thumbs-up and very little money or time. He did almost the entirety of Season 1 by himself, often having random fun with non-serious battles like Goomba vs. Koopa or Justin Beiber vs. Rebecca Black. Each episode, he was given two weeks to research, write, animate, and edit the entire thing by himself. That's not exactly ideal working conditions, and led to a lot of inconsistencies and mistakes. Goku vs. Superman was the only one with a larger team, and even then, only for the animation. In Season 2, he was given a little more time and a much larger budget. Freelance Animators began to be hired for episodes, and he could even delegate some research to one or two other people. But it wasn't a real show with consistent rules, research, and writing yet. It was still not the best working conditions. There was a massive break between Seasons 2 and 3. During this break, Ben Singer was able to create a good schedule where multiple episodes could be worked on at once, gain the resources needed to hire on more staff, and completely revamp the format and rules of the show. Most 3D episodes from now on are done by the same guy and team, and most 2D animations are done by one of two animators. Every episode has a team of researchers that present their findings for review. In Seasons 1 & 2, who won was decided exclusively by Ben Singer based on his own understanding of the characters, with some intentional arguments from his co-host, Chad James. Season 3 onward, every bit of research is presented to the entire crew, and anywhere from 20-40 people sit in a room and argue every argument they can think of until the winner becomes unanimous. This has greatly lessened the amount of fights that are generally considered incorrect. They still use this method, and have revealed that some episodes have been completely finished, then suddenly delayed for weeks after somebody discovers something new or comes up with a new argument. The most important factor, however, is the overhaul in the Rules of Death Battle. In Seasons 1 & 2, they included all incarnations of a character combined into some composite form, all feats being equal. They focused on abilities a little more than stats. The winner was whoever would win the specific scenario they imagined (hence why you have lines in older episodes that refer specifically to the animation and none of the other ways this fight could have gone). Season 3 onward, the primary purpose of an episode is to determine this one question: If these characters were to fight a thousand times, which one would win more often? Their new rules are as follows: *- Combatants possess no prior knowledge of each other unless specified by canon or otherwise.* This is an important one, as many characters have very specific weaknesses that their opponent would never normally think to exploit. A good example would be Superman. Nobody outside of his universe (or others with a Superman) would know that he was weak to kryptonite, and as such would not seek to exploit that weakness. The "unless" is equally important. If they were to do Batman vs. Superman, Batman would certainly know of that weakness, and would seek to exploit it, because that's a canonical part of his character. The "otherwise" this rule refers to is talking about characters with mind-reading or great detective skills, or something to that effect. It wouldn't be right to say that Mewtwo can't find out about Shadow's weaknesses in this episode just because of this rule. Reading minds and discovering weaknesses is what Mewtwo's all about. *- To ensure a fair fight, all moral restraints from killing are ignored. All other traits are considered.* This is a battle to the death, and should be treated as such. Characters aren't going to go into a bloodlust, and they still retain their personalities and other moral characteristics (such as wishing to fight their opponent only when he's at his best) but they'll have no hesitations about ending their life when given the chance. *- A character's maximum potential is examined unless otherwise specified. Factors unrelated to the characters cannot end the battle.* This is sort of a two-in-one rule. First, they look at the maximum potential a character has throughout their story in terms of combat capability. For many characters, there are moments when they lost to someone they have no business losing to because of plot, or maybe a mountain-shaking tornado robot gets taken out by a single bullet _cough cough._ That stuff isn't counted. They're taking these guys at their strongest. The "unless otherwise specified" line, however, provides an exception to this. For example, Captain America's strongest was technically when he wielded the Infinity Gauntlet. So should they give him the Infinity Gauntlet? No! That'd be REALLY dumb. Nobody wants to see him fighting with the Infinity Gauntlet - they want to know if CAPTAIN AMERICA can beat Batman. An alternate universe version of Alfred, Batman's butler, once used a pill to enhance his body to Superman's level. Would we count that? No. That's not the character everyone wants to see fighting. Those aren't their powers. That's not who they are. "Unless otherwise specified" is an essential line in this rule. Second, it's stated that factors unrelated to a character cannot end the battle. Notice that this is not a "no outside help" rule. Outside help is fine - but only if it's an essential and consistent part of their arsenal. Jiraya has the ability to summon toads to fight for him. That's an essential and consistent part of his arsenal. That does not break this rule. But if he were to send a message to Naruto (his student and the main character of the show Jiraya is from) and tell him to come fight, too, then that would break this rule. We want to know if Jiraya can beat whoever he is fighting, not Naruto. This rule also prevents the environment from forcing a death. The environment is an outside factor, and unless it's adjusted so that one character can use all their powers (such as making it near water so that Katara can waterbend, making the arena an abandoned building so Batman can use stealth, or having the fight in a desert so Gaara has a consistent supply of sand to fight with) it shouldn't be what decides the winner. How dumb would it be to say "Well, Batman outmatches this random guy off the street in every way, but he loses the Death Battle because they decided there happened to be a vat of acid directly underneath him"? *- All official material related to a character is applied unless found contradictory to original source material.* So, basically, any material that's officially recognized is up for grabs, but only if it doesn't contradict what's shown about the character in canon. Batman's main canon is the comics, for example, but they can and will measure and apply all noteworthy feats from the TV Shows and Movies. But if something in those contradicts the official material (e.g. if Batman is shown to breathe in space in an episode of an old TV Show, or magically holds off Superman with brute strength) then it won't be applied. Another decent example is the Sonic Universe. They can take into account things like the TV Shows, Movies, gamebooks, related comics, and spin-off games, but can't take into account basically anything from the Archie Sonic comics, since those are totally different characters with totally different powers. So, yeah, things are way more profession now. *_TL;DR: Season 3 gave the show more researchers, a way better way of picking winners, and a revamp of the rules. People don't know who people are at first, everyone has their regular personality but is now fine with killing, people are at their strongest when they fight but can't randomly win because of environment or calling someone else to fight, and the researchers look at everything in the bonus material for people, but throw feats out the window if they contradict the original character._* Oh, and, uh, the fight itself is just a fun extra. It doesn't determine the winner. They usually figure that out way before animation even begins. Hoped some of this helps!

@@theduckgoesmoo They have a weekly podcast that's been running since mid-Season 3 (shortly before the upcoming Hulk vs Doomsday) where they nerd out, talk about random matchups that are requested and may or may not happen, show some behind-the-scenes stuff, and answer questions. I've been following it since Day 1, and this is some of the stuff they talk about. Most of the time if you hear some claim about the writers or crew (such as Dante vs. Bayonetta being the dream fight of the 3D Animator, Donatello being the director's favorite ninja turtle, certain episodes where the writer admits he got it wrong), nine times out of ten all the extra information comes from this podcast. It's honestly really cool. I find it hilarious that for this episode you said "I feel like this won't matter" regarding Shadow's memory loss, and it was the deciding factor of the fight. Don’t worry, a lot of people got this one wrong when watching. Some try to dispute it by bringing up the time Black Shadow failed to mind-control Shadow, completely ignoring that Gerald had made Shadow to resist this very specific style of mind-control on a genetic level, and EVEN THEN he was still almost taken over by it. He must have anti-resistence to mind manipulation. It works way too effectively every one of the dozens of times it's used on him.

Mewtwo of the Pokemon adventures manga is incredibly cool. He's also more restrained. See, it has Blaine's DNA in it and when he becomes agitated, exhausted, ir whenever he gets too far from Blaine, his DNA gets unstable because theh have some sort of connection or something. So Blaine's the ONLY ONE who can be the trainer of Mewtwo

Mewtwo and Shadow were my childhood! The reason Shadow has a gun was from the "Shadow The Hedgehog" game for ps2 and game cube. Which I still have. The music is amazing and depending on your choices has multiple endings and songs.

4:32 "Is that like Deoxys or something?" Yes. Those are pictures from the Pokemon Adventures manga (or Pokemon Special in Japanese), which is AMAZING. Like, really, this is THE best medium of Pokemon ever. Even the creator of Pokemon had stated that this manga is "the closest to the world he had imagined". I cannot recommend it highly enough! Anybody who is a fan of Pokemon should give this a read, and people who aren't but are manga readers in general should get around to it, too, because it's that good. Those particular pictures are from FireRed & LeafGreen saga. You see, this series is divided by sagas: first is Red, Green and Blue, covering adventures of Red, his rival Green (or Blue in official English translation; as Pokemon Green game never came outside of Japan, so they changed the rival's name to Blue; consequences of which ruin an amazing stupid joke Mewtwo, of all beings, makes in the Fire & LeafGreen saga years later), and mischievous girl named Blue (Green in official English), then it's the Yellow saga, focusing on Yellow, then we go to Johto with Gold, Silver, and later Crystal, next is Ruby and Sapphire (which is my personal favorite and I actually own physical copy), FireRed and LeafGreen, Emerald, Diamond and Pearl, Platinum, OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire, and so on. The story keeps evolving in the manga, not just sticking to an eternally 10 year old character, each saga focuses on different set of characters, with the old ones occasionally popping up (with one or two particularly feeling like Avengers styled crossovers!), remains MOSTLY faithful to the events from the games (I still cannot forgive the anime how they butchered Team Magma and Aquas' storyline... and don't get me started on BW series!), and is far more mature than the anime... well "far" might be too much, it still keeps this "kid friendly" feel for most of the time, and the anime does occasionally cover mature stuff (like the 1001st episode, which was just WOW 0_0). Seriously, give it a read, I promise you won't be disappointed. Admittedly, it takes a volume or two to get to the really good stuff (as I said, my personal favorite are Ruby and Sapphire saga, but the previous ones are awesome too), but once you finish the first saga (which is only 4 volumes - 40 chapters - long), you will want to know what happens next^^ PS: Hope I didn't ramble too much, I can get very passionate about this manga. I think I talk about it on my blog to my readers (I write fanfiction, long and unrelated story) every few months about how amazing it is ^^;
VA Fun Fact! So, to start this one off, I've got a fun fact for you unrelated to this particular video. Mewtwo, in the original movie, credited as being voiced by Philip Bartlett. In 2001, it was believed he had died. Turns out (I just learned this while trying to look up his name because I couldn't remember) he is still alive and was using an Alias. His actual name was Jay Goede, but regardless of his living status, he did not return to play Mewtwo in the sequel "Mewtwo Returns," which is a movie I highly recommend watching. In the sequel, Mewtwo's voice was actually taken over by 4Kids VA, Dan Green. You would know this voice best as the voice of Yugi Moto in original show, Yu-Gi-Oh. He plays both Yugi and Yami (The Pharaoh). Also, tying this back into this video in a fun way, Dan would also end up voicing the character Knuckles the Echidna from the Sonic Franchise from 2004-2008. Now the fun facts for THIS video! Mewtwo is voiced by Chris "Kirbopher" Niosi. Voice of Noah in Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged, and animator for LittleKuriboh and TeamFourStar (and Terrain of Magical Expertise). Shadow (And I know you're gonna love this one) is Curtis "Takahata101" Arnott. Pretty sure I don't need to list his credits off at this point.
Bonus Bonus Fun Fact: Not sure if Kyle noticed, but Shadow's voice was off and didn't sound right. That was actually on purpose. It was a reference to a Sonic Game that I've never heard of and apparently, it had some terrible voice acting, including Shadow.
As a rule if a fighter has telepathic abilities and it's opponent has none, nor any form of defense against them, the psychic will win. Same with reality warpers. Shadow is faster and stronger but has no immunity to psychic attack, it's no different to someone like Goku, on paper Mewtwo should be able to defeat him simply based on the fact that Goku has no written in immunity to psychic attack.
Goku has dealt with psychic based attacks though. He saw through an illusion in the original Dragon Ball, he's battled against guys with telekinisis and mind reading powers (He himself has the power to read minds, he shown he can do that on Namek when he first got there) and brainwashing doesn't work on him and even if it did, Goku can power though it like Vegeta did with his. And yes. Goku defeats Mewtwo in EVERY SINGLE sense of the word. Mewtwo would not be able to pull off his "mind erasing powers", as Goku has not only a powerful mind, he would be FAR too fast. Mewtwo can't erase someone's memory if he can't track them, or getting hammered on by Goku who would land several blows on him, before Mewtwo can even process the thought of "I should erase his memory".
I think they put to much emphasis on mewtwos durability and not enough on shadows speed and power. Also, Shadow wouldn't just stand there and let someone hit him even if he didn't have his memories. This is another one that they got really wrong. Mewtwo has no chance against Shadow.

@b.a.r.f1004 Let me run down the plot of Sonic 06 in a simple and single sentence (despite it being trash). All the characters are being played like fiddles because of a character named Mephiles, except for Shadow. That’s all you need to know. Everything was going to be easy for him, if it weren’t for Shadow knowing he was going to be played like the other characters in the story. However Mephiles still accomplished his goal and became a celestial being thanks to the other characters being gullible. When 1 can damage a celestial being, I think you can take down Mewtwo. Especially when said celestial being can, and I quote “Eat dimensions for lunch”.
He has a Gun because he lost Chaos Spear which debuted in SA2 Battle because of that fall but guns are only in gameplay even though optional and not canon, the reason why it's in the OP is to show the two canon Routes of his game, Dark and Neutral which you can see he rides his bike looking at the bird Black Arms flying above him but with a cautious look, shows signs of evil and is well....neutral.

So I'm undecided on this match. While Mewtwo has the ability to wipe Shadows mind Shadow moves at light speed and can travel through time I don't know if that will work. Also even though Shadow has had his memory scrambled multiple times he never looses the abilities that are hardwired into him. They seem almost instinctual.

In my opinion: Shadow should be able to move at FTL (At most) with Super Form, so he should be frankly too fast for Mewtwo to pull out his mind wiping powers. And while I do not agree with the whole universal stuff (Its debatable) for Shadow, he should be at least in the solar system regions, making him more then a match for Mewtwo. And as you said, Shadow can still fight with out his memories, so Shadow won't go "WHY AM I GLOWING!!!?!?!?" he'd still attack and finish Mewtwo off.

Can you please react to episodes outside of the playlists as there will be many good, and have been many good episodes you missed because they aren't there. I suggest locking in the Death Battle fandom wiki as all the episodes are listed in order after when they are released.
Honestly I'd compare the lake to Crater Lake, what with the island in it. Also they missed how Mewtwo somehow showed up in feudal Japan in the game Pokémon Conquest. So either it can time travel or Conquest, a game that involves actual real people from Japanese history (the goal is to defeat Nobunaga), somehow takes place in modern day.

As for Shadow with a gun and motorcycle. It was his spinoff game and it was horrible because when you are a living weapon and you run faster than bullets why use a gun
Also, I think logically (or at least I try, becasue it helps me to remember them) about the weaknesses and strengths of pokemon. So bugs against psychic. I imagine Psychics need concentration and bugs can interrupt that. Like, I like some bugs and beetles are cool, but if one flies by my ear, it's buzz gets to my core and gives me the jitters for some reason. Imagine being a psychic and having to deal with THAT
I think the reason for psychic type weaknesses are based on common phobias and how fear can affect ones mind. Three big phobia being bugs, ghosts, and the dark.
Shadow would just blitz Mewtwo. He's much faster than his perception speed. Also the time stop would neg him too. Although they definitely downplayed Mewtwo. He has much better scaling. Even normal Pokémon can dodge the move Flash. Which is literally light.
I just found this, and I'm so sorry you watched this disgusting abomination. In my opinion the research was done VERY badly, but even ignoring the research, the fight was just... Just awful. Mewtwo's voice was.... Okay? Shadow's voice was trash. The fight.... Was garbage, the animation wasn't even finished, and the ending was stupid. This was a middle finger to Mewtwo and Shadow fans. Its an insult to Shadow fans for obvious reasons, and an insult to Mewtwo for not giving him a proper fight. I highly suggest you check out "Fatal Conflict Shadow vs Mewtwo" over on the Rewind Rumble channel. Fatal Conflict is a zero research show, so results don't matter, but the fight on that channel is INFINITALLY BETTER then this.... This death battle doesn't even have the right to be called a "fight".
Although I can't argue with the result, this episode was absolutely a spite match. Takahata 101 was specifically told to give Shadow a stupid voice and they didn't even let him get too many hits in or act in character during the animation itself. I think both Mewtwo and Shadow had instant kill options (mind control and Chaos Control respectively) but since Shadow must say the words "Chaos Control" but Mewteo can control minds instantly, it ironically has faster access to it's instant kill option so I'm not mad about the result.
Yeah, when they first announced this battle I had thought: "Um, wouldn't it make more sense to use Silver? They're both psychics and would make the fight more even..." but they had gone with the whole thing that they are similar because they were created, which indeed does make sense except one is clearly superior in combat.

Mewtwo CAN'T do that in an instant, and he certainly can't erase Shadows WHOLE memory in an instant. If anything, Shadow can say Chaos Control quicker then Mewtwo think "Oh I should read his mind and then erase his memory". Shadow would not go "CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (10 anime episodes later OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS CONTROL!!!" Personally disagree with this one. Shadow should really one shot and blitz imo. Even if mewtwo got off the memory erasure (which as far as I remember it's never even used it in combat, as well as mind control, see the entrie genesect movie and the sequel to the first movie with giovanni) it wouldn't matter because instinct is a thing, shadow would still try to fight when he realises he's being attacked and proceed to one shot. At least they didn't try to argue planet level mewtwo, never understood how that's a thing.
These comments hurt to read. I mean the ones from the Sonic fanboys. They clearly don't understand psychic abilities. I don't know much Sonic lore so I can't say anything to it but I do know Pokèmon. If Shadow does have an immunity to mind manipulation that still doesn't save him from psychic attacks or mind reading (it's not manipulation). Mewtwo could literally rip him apart with a mere thought. Since Shadow's Chaos Power abilities seem to be incantation based (have to say a phrase to activate) they can be rendered useless simply by rendering Shadow unable to speak. Also I seem to recall him needing an emerald to even use them. Either way Shadow stood no chance. Strength and speed do not win fights. Intelligence and wisdom do. With that being said Mew could even beat Shadow probably with even less effort as Mew can do what Mewtwo can and then some as Mew can learn any and all moves.
I just have to say some of the MewTwos facts come from Other MewTwos. the First MewTwo from Mwetwo Strikes back and Return is nearly God like in Power. MewTwo from Genesect and the Legend Awakened can lift a lake and go Mega and that it. the First Mewtwo could mind control create Storms and Erase Memories . also the Mewtwo from Reds Adventure is similar to the first but is more an Animal then the First Movies MewTwo hence why it got captured in a pokeball.

Honestly, for me, I like Mega Mewtwo X over Y, but that's because I like the idea of the bulkiness and the adding of the Fighting type. Even if it makes them really weak against Ghost, Flying, and Fairy types, the elimination of the weakness of Bug and Dark types are a huge up.
Personally think shadow should've cause he's way more faster, and when shadow chaos controls it would of been way faster than the animation showed it to be, dude was holding saying chaos control like if a dragon ball character was doing a kamehameha.
Mewtwo can also just instantly teleport around wherever he wants to though, and Mewtwo is both sturdy enough to last a bit in a close up fight and smart enough to teleport out of the fight at the first opportunity given, brew up a plan, then teleport back to Shadow and finish him off before he gets got. Then he would just stall with his barriers until his memory attack got Shadow.

You need to remember, Shadow is SLOWER than Sonic, at heart, Shadow is a faker. He was built after the prophesied fight between super sonic and eggman. Shadow is far from multiversal. Sonic, his more powerful rival, is barely universal. I do agree that they underestimated Shadow due to the problems of Sonic 06.
Never showing up in Dragon Ball Super means that Cell does not scale to anything good, and thus Shadow would fold Cell into pieces. Every Dragon Ball character that does show up in Super would eat the hedgehog for breakfast though. Unless you bring in the Archie Sonic comics but that's another headache

@@tyreeharris7214 Not necessarily. As with any Pokemon, you can just lower its health and inflict status ailments like Paralyze or Sleep to increase the chance of catching it. Mewtwo just has an incredibly low catch rate, so it's just harder to catch overall.

The characters they put against each other are usually amalgamations of different incarnations of the same character
So, Manga Mewtwo has giant spoon, anime Mewtwo can talk and mega evolve at will, and game Mewtwo just hits really really hard and is always mad but never really flies.
Death Battle Mewtwo can do all of these.
Also, basically any Pokémon that exists can be caught and used. There are a few exceptions like Eternamax Eternatus who is only a boss and doesn’t work outside of its boss fight because game stats and also it’s 328 feet long. For reference the Blue Whale is about 100 and is the largest animal to ever exist. There was also AZ’s Floette which is just a Floette with a different flower and an unused move attached to it. Never actually appeared in the games besides a cutscene.
And Mother Beast Lusamine, who's a pokemon/human hybrid and one of the most terrifying bosses in the series...
...until you realize you're fighting her pokemon as normal instead of her directly.

Remember Charizard’s whole “temporary mega transformation” thing? Mewtwo can activate that on its own and, depending on if you’re playing Pokémon X or Pokémon Y, you get a different Mega form. They just gave him the Y form in this Death Battle, which heavily skews his stat buffs on the special attack and speed- basically, amplifying the stuff that killed Shadow.

So, there's something very important about this show that you should know, but I don't think anybody has told you yet: the rules changed after Season 2. Actually, a lot of stuff changed.
This is a pretty long, fairly important spiel, but if you want, you can just *skip to the TL;DR at the end.*
So, Seasons 1 and 2 were more or less experiments by the company (which was then ScrewAttack) on a show, format, and idea that had never really been done before. The director, Ben Singer (who also voices Wiz), came up with the concept, pitched it, and was given the thumbs-up. A thumbs-up and very little money or time. He did almost the entirety of Season 1 by himself, often having random fun with non-serious battles like Goomba vs. Koopa or Justin Beiber vs. Rebecca Black. Each episode, he was given two weeks to research, write, animate, and edit the entire thing by himself. That's not exactly ideal working conditions, and led to a lot of inconsistencies and mistakes. Goku vs. Superman was the only one with a larger team, and even then, only for the animation.
In Season 2, he was given a little more time and a much larger budget. Freelance Animators began to be hired for episodes, and he could even delegate some research to one or two other people. But it wasn't a real show with consistent rules, research, and writing yet. It was still not the best working conditions.
There was a massive break between Seasons 2 and 3. During this break, Ben Singer was able to create a good schedule where multiple episodes could be worked on at once, gain the resources needed to hire on more staff, and completely revamp the format and rules of the show. Most 3D episodes from now on are done by the same guy and team, and most 2D animations are done by one of two animators. Every episode has a team of researchers that present their findings for review.
In Seasons 1 & 2, who won was decided exclusively by Ben Singer based on his own understanding of the characters, with some intentional arguments from his co-host, Chad James. Season 3 onward, every bit of research is presented to the entire crew, and anywhere from 20-40 people sit in a room and argue every argument they can think of until the winner becomes unanimous. This has greatly lessened the amount of fights that are generally considered incorrect. They still use this method, and have revealed that some episodes have been completely finished, then suddenly delayed for weeks after somebody discovers something new or comes up with a new argument.
The most important factor, however, is the overhaul in the Rules of Death Battle. In Seasons 1 & 2, they included all incarnations of a character combined into some composite form, all feats being equal. They focused on abilities a little more than stats. The winner was whoever would win the specific scenario they imagined (hence why you have lines in older episodes that refer specifically to the animation and none of the other ways this fight could have gone). Season 3 onward, the primary purpose of an episode is to determine this one question: If these characters were to fight a thousand times, which one would win more often?
Their new rules are as follows:
*- Combatants possess no prior knowledge of each other unless specified by canon or otherwise.*
This is an important one, as many characters have very specific weaknesses that their opponent would never normally think to exploit. A good example would be Superman. Nobody outside of his universe (or others with a Superman) would know that he was weak to kryptonite, and as such would not seek to exploit that weakness. The "unless" is equally important. If they were to do Batman vs. Superman, Batman would certainly know of that weakness, and would seek to exploit it, because that's a canonical part of his character. The "otherwise" this rule refers to is talking about characters with mind-reading or great detective skills, or something to that effect. It wouldn't be right to say that Mewtwo can't find out about Shadow's weaknesses in this episode just because of this rule. Reading minds and discovering weaknesses is what Mewtwo's all about.
*- To ensure a fair fight, all moral restraints from killing are ignored. All other traits are considered.*
This is a battle to the death, and should be treated as such. Characters aren't going to go into a bloodlust, and they still retain their personalities and other moral characteristics (such as wishing to fight their opponent only when he's at his best) but they'll have no hesitations about ending their life when given the chance.
*- A character's maximum potential is examined unless otherwise specified. Factors unrelated to the characters cannot end the battle.*
This is sort of a two-in-one rule. First, they look at the maximum potential a character has throughout their story in terms of combat capability. For many characters, there are moments when they lost to someone they have no business losing to because of plot, or maybe a mountain-shaking tornado robot gets taken out by a single bullet _cough cough._ That stuff isn't counted. They're taking these guys at their strongest. The "unless otherwise specified" line, however, provides an exception to this. For example, Captain America's strongest was technically when he wielded the Infinity Gauntlet. So should they give him the Infinity Gauntlet? No! That'd be REALLY dumb. Nobody wants to see him fighting with the Infinity Gauntlet - they want to know if CAPTAIN AMERICA can beat Batman. An alternate universe version of Alfred, Batman's butler, once used a pill to enhance his body to Superman's level. Would we count that? No. That's not the character everyone wants to see fighting. Those aren't their powers. That's not who they are. "Unless otherwise specified" is an essential line in this rule.
Second, it's stated that factors unrelated to a character cannot end the battle. Notice that this is not a "no outside help" rule. Outside help is fine - but only if it's an essential and consistent part of their arsenal. Jiraya has the ability to summon toads to fight for him. That's an essential and consistent part of his arsenal. That does not break this rule. But if he were to send a message to Naruto (his student and the main character of the show Jiraya is from) and tell him to come fight, too, then that would break this rule. We want to know if Jiraya can beat whoever he is fighting, not Naruto. This rule also prevents the environment from forcing a death. The environment is an outside factor, and unless it's adjusted so that one character can use all their powers (such as making it near water so that Katara can waterbend, making the arena an abandoned building so Batman can use stealth, or having the fight in a desert so Gaara has a consistent supply of sand to fight with) it shouldn't be what decides the winner. How dumb would it be to say "Well, Batman outmatches this random guy off the street in every way, but he loses the Death Battle because they decided there happened to be a vat of acid directly underneath him"?
*- All official material related to a character is applied unless found contradictory to original source material.*
So, basically, any material that's officially recognized is up for grabs, but only if it doesn't contradict what's shown about the character in canon. Batman's main canon is the comics, for example, but they can and will measure and apply all noteworthy feats from the TV Shows and Movies. But if something in those contradicts the official material (e.g. if Batman is shown to breathe in space in an episode of an old TV Show, or magically holds off Superman with brute strength) then it won't be applied. Another decent example is the Sonic Universe. They can take into account things like the TV Shows, Movies, gamebooks, related comics, and spin-off games, but can't take into account basically anything from the Archie Sonic comics, since those are totally different characters with totally different powers.
So, yeah, things are way more profession now.
*_TL;DR: Season 3 gave the show more researchers, a way better way of picking winners, and a revamp of the rules. People don't know who people are at first, everyone has their regular personality but is now fine with killing, people are at their strongest when they fight but can't randomly win because of environment or calling someone else to fight, and the researchers look at everything in the bonus material for people, but throw feats out the window if they contradict the original character._*
Oh, and, uh, the fight itself is just a fun extra. It doesn't determine the winner. They usually figure that out way before animation even begins.

@@theduckgoesmoo They have a weekly podcast that's been running since mid-Season 3 (shortly before the upcoming Hulk vs Doomsday) where they nerd out, talk about random matchups that are requested and may or may not happen, show some behind-the-scenes stuff, and answer questions. I've been following it since Day 1, and this is some of the stuff they talk about. Most of the time if you hear some claim about the writers or crew (such as Dante vs. Bayonetta being the dream fight of the 3D Animator, Donatello being the director's favorite ninja turtle, certain episodes where the writer admits he got it wrong), nine times out of ten all the extra information comes from this podcast. It's honestly really cool.
I find it hilarious that for this episode you said "I feel like this won't matter" regarding Shadow's memory loss, and it was the deciding factor of the fight. Don’t worry, a lot of people got this one wrong when watching. Some try to dispute it by bringing up the time Black Shadow failed to mind-control Shadow, completely ignoring that Gerald had made Shadow to resist this very specific style of mind-control on a genetic level, and EVEN THEN he was still almost taken over by it. He must have anti-resistence to mind manipulation. It works way too effectively every one of the dozens of times it's used on him.

Yes. Those are pictures from the Pokemon Adventures manga (or Pokemon Special in Japanese), which is AMAZING. Like, really, this is THE best medium of Pokemon ever. Even the creator of Pokemon had stated that this manga is "the closest to the world he had imagined". I cannot recommend it highly enough! Anybody who is a fan of Pokemon should give this a read, and people who aren't but are manga readers in general should get around to it, too, because it's that good.
Those particular pictures are from FireRed & LeafGreen saga. You see, this series is divided by sagas: first is Red, Green and Blue, covering adventures of Red, his rival Green (or Blue in official English translation; as Pokemon Green game never came outside of Japan, so they changed the rival's name to Blue; consequences of which ruin an amazing stupid joke Mewtwo, of all beings, makes in the Fire & LeafGreen saga years later), and mischievous girl named Blue (Green in official English), then it's the Yellow saga, focusing on Yellow, then we go to Johto with Gold, Silver, and later Crystal, next is Ruby and Sapphire (which is my personal favorite and I actually own physical copy), FireRed and LeafGreen, Emerald, Diamond and Pearl, Platinum, OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire, and so on.
The story keeps evolving in the manga, not just sticking to an eternally 10 year old character, each saga focuses on different set of characters, with the old ones occasionally popping up (with one or two particularly feeling like Avengers styled crossovers!), remains MOSTLY faithful to the events from the games (I still cannot forgive the anime how they butchered Team Magma and Aquas' storyline... and don't get me started on BW series!), and is far more mature than the anime... well "far" might be too much, it still keeps this "kid friendly" feel for most of the time, and the anime does occasionally cover mature stuff (like the 1001st episode, which was just WOW 0_0).
Seriously, give it a read, I promise you won't be disappointed. Admittedly, it takes a volume or two to get to the really good stuff (as I said, my personal favorite are Ruby and Sapphire saga, but the previous ones are awesome too), but once you finish the first saga (which is only 4 volumes - 40 chapters - long), you will want to know what happens next^^
PS: Hope I didn't ramble too much, I can get very passionate about this manga. I think I talk about it on my blog to my readers (I write fanfiction, long and unrelated story) every few months about how amazing it is ^^;
VA Fun Fact!
So, to start this one off, I've got a fun fact for you unrelated to this particular video. Mewtwo, in the original movie, credited as being voiced by Philip Bartlett. In 2001, it was believed he had died. Turns out (I just learned this while trying to look up his name because I couldn't remember) he is still alive and was using an Alias. His actual name was Jay Goede, but regardless of his living status, he did not return to play Mewtwo in the sequel "Mewtwo Returns," which is a movie I highly recommend watching.
In the sequel, Mewtwo's voice was actually taken over by 4Kids VA, Dan Green. You would know this voice best as the voice of Yugi Moto in original show, Yu-Gi-Oh. He plays both Yugi and Yami (The Pharaoh). Also, tying this back into this video in a fun way, Dan would also end up voicing the character Knuckles the Echidna from the Sonic Franchise from 2004-2008.

Mewtwo is voiced by Chris "Kirbopher" Niosi. Voice of Noah in Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged, and animator for LittleKuriboh and TeamFourStar (and Terrain of Magical Expertise).

the "armor thing" was made to suppress Mewtwo's psychic power, with Giovanni saying it was "Focusing' it instead.
As a rule if a fighter has telepathic abilities and it's opponent has none, nor any form of defense against them, the psychic will win.
Same with reality warpers. Shadow is faster and stronger but has no immunity to psychic attack, it's no different to someone like Goku, on paper Mewtwo should be able to defeat him simply based on the fact that Goku has no written in immunity to psychic attack.
Noted from now on
Goku has dealt with psychic based attacks though. He saw through an illusion in the original Dragon Ball, he's battled against guys with telekinisis and mind reading powers (He himself has the power to read minds, he shown he can do that on Namek when he first got there) and brainwashing doesn't work on him and even if it did, Goku can power though it like Vegeta did with his.
And yes. Goku defeats Mewtwo in EVERY SINGLE sense of the word. Mewtwo would not be able to pull off his "mind erasing powers", as Goku has not only a powerful mind, he would be FAR too fast. Mewtwo can't erase someone's memory if he can't track them, or getting hammered on by Goku who would land several blows on him, before Mewtwo can even process the thought of "I should erase his memory".
Also: Shadow does have immunity to psychic attacks. He's immune to brainwashing, as stated in Shadow the Hedgehog by the final boss
I think they put to much emphasis on mewtwos durability and not enough on shadows speed and power. Also, Shadow wouldn't just stand there and let someone hit him even if he didn't have his memories. This is another one that they got really wrong. Mewtwo has no chance against Shadow.

@b.a.r.f1004 Let me run down the plot of Sonic 06 in a simple and single sentence (despite it being trash). All the characters are being played like fiddles because of a character named Mephiles, except for Shadow. That’s all you need to know. Everything was going to be easy for him, if it weren’t for Shadow knowing he was going to be played like the other characters in the story.
However Mephiles still accomplished his goal and became a celestial being thanks to the other characters being gullible. When 1 can damage a celestial being, I think you can take down Mewtwo. Especially when said celestial being can, and I quote “Eat dimensions for lunch”.
He has a Gun because he lost Chaos Spear which debuted in SA2 Battle because of that fall but guns are only in gameplay even though optional and not canon, the reason why it's in the OP is to show the two canon Routes of his game, Dark and Neutral which you can see he rides his bike looking at the bird Black Arms flying above him but with a cautious look, shows signs of evil and is well....neutral.

So I'm undecided on this match. While Mewtwo has the ability to wipe Shadows mind Shadow moves at light speed and can travel through time I don't know if that will work. Also even though Shadow has had his memory scrambled multiple times he never looses the abilities that are hardwired into him. They seem almost instinctual.

In my opinion: Shadow should be able to move at FTL (At most) with Super Form, so he should be frankly too fast for Mewtwo to pull out his mind wiping powers. And while I do not agree with the whole universal stuff (Its debatable) for Shadow, he should be at least in the solar system regions, making him more then a match for Mewtwo.
And as you said, Shadow can still fight with out his memories, so Shadow won't go "WHY AM I GLOWING!!!?!?!?" he'd still attack and finish Mewtwo off.

Also they missed how Mewtwo somehow showed up in feudal Japan in the game Pokémon Conquest. So either it can time travel or Conquest, a game that involves actual real people from Japanese history (the goal is to defeat Nobunaga), somehow takes place in modern day.

Also, I think logically (or at least I try, becasue it helps me to remember them) about the weaknesses and strengths of pokemon. So bugs against psychic. I imagine Psychics need concentration and bugs can interrupt that. Like, I like some bugs and beetles are cool, but if one flies by my ear, it's buzz gets to my core and gives me the jitters for some reason. Imagine being a psychic and having to deal with THAT
I think the reason for psychic type weaknesses are based on common phobias and how fear can affect ones mind. Three big phobia being bugs, ghosts, and the dark.

In my opinion the research was done VERY badly, but even ignoring the research, the fight was just... Just awful. Mewtwo's voice was.... Okay? Shadow's voice was trash. The fight.... Was garbage, the animation wasn't even finished, and the ending was stupid. This was a middle finger to Mewtwo and Shadow fans. Its an insult to Shadow fans for obvious reasons, and an insult to Mewtwo for not giving him a proper fight.
I highly suggest you check out "Fatal Conflict Shadow vs Mewtwo" over on the Rewind Rumble channel. Fatal Conflict is a zero research show, so results don't matter, but the fight on that channel is INFINITALLY BETTER then this.... This death battle doesn't even have the right to be called a "fight".
Although I can't argue with the result, this episode was absolutely a spite match. Takahata 101 was specifically told to give Shadow a stupid voice and they didn't even let him get too many hits in or act in character during the animation itself. I think both Mewtwo and Shadow had instant kill options (mind control and Chaos Control respectively) but since Shadow must say the words "Chaos Control" but Mewteo can control minds instantly, it ironically has faster access to it's instant kill option so I'm not mad about the result.
Yeah, when they first announced this battle I had thought: "Um, wouldn't it make more sense to use Silver? They're both psychics and would make the fight more even..." but they had gone with the whole thing that they are similar because they were created, which indeed does make sense except one is clearly superior in combat.

Mewtwo CAN'T do that in an instant, and he certainly can't erase Shadows WHOLE memory in an instant. If anything, Shadow can say Chaos Control quicker then Mewtwo think "Oh I should read his mind and then erase his memory". Shadow would not go "CHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (10 anime episodes later OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS CONTROL!!!" Personally disagree with this one. Shadow should really one shot and blitz imo. Even if mewtwo got off the memory erasure (which as far as I remember it's never even used it in combat, as well as mind control, see the entrie genesect movie and the sequel to the first movie with giovanni) it wouldn't matter because instinct is a thing, shadow would still try to fight when he realises he's being attacked and proceed to one shot.

These comments hurt to read. I mean the ones from the Sonic fanboys. They clearly don't understand psychic abilities. I don't know much Sonic lore so I can't say anything to it but I do know Pokèmon. If Shadow does have an immunity to mind manipulation that still doesn't save him from psychic attacks or mind reading (it's not manipulation). Mewtwo could literally rip him apart with a mere thought. Since Shadow's Chaos Power abilities seem to be incantation based (have to say a phrase to activate) they can be rendered useless simply by rendering Shadow unable to speak. Also I seem to recall him needing an emerald to even use them. Either way Shadow stood no chance. Strength and speed do not win fights. Intelligence and wisdom do. With that being said Mew could even beat Shadow probably with even less effort as Mew can do what Mewtwo can and then some as Mew can learn any and all moves.

Honestly, for me, I like Mega Mewtwo X over Y, but that's because I like the idea of the bulkiness and the adding of the Fighting type. Even if it makes them really weak against Ghost, Flying, and Fairy types, the elimination of the weakness of Bug and Dark types are a huge up.

Personally think shadow should've cause he's way more faster, and when shadow chaos controls it would of been way faster than the animation showed it to be, dude was holding saying chaos control like if a dragon ball character was doing a kamehameha.
Mewtwo can also just instantly teleport around wherever he wants to though, and Mewtwo is both sturdy enough to last a bit in a close up fight and smart enough to teleport out of the fight at the first opportunity given, brew up a plan, then teleport back to Shadow and finish him off before he gets got. Then he would just stall with his barriers until his memory attack got Shadow.

@@Dark-mi9ks Yeah, uh, infinite speed and reaction time isn’t a thing, if Mario can beat sonic pretty easily, than mewtwo’s mind wipe could most likely hit, and he can erase the nerves needed to breathe and pump his heart. You need to remember, Shadow is SLOWER than Sonic, at heart, Shadow is a faker. He was built after the prophesied fight between super sonic and eggman. Shadow is far from multiversal. Sonic, his more powerful rival, is barely universal. I do agree that they underestimated Shadow due to the problems of Sonic 06.
Never showing up in Dragon Ball Super means that Cell does not scale to anything good, and thus Shadow would fold Cell into pieces. Every Dragon Ball character that does show up in Super would eat the hedgehog for breakfast though. Unless you bring in the Archie Sonic comics but that's another headache
