The voice acting was incredible. He reminds me of the alien Smith from the 90s Lost In Space movie. Quite a compliment I think, since I'm comparing the voice actor to the legendary Gary Oldman!
The game's lore suggests that both Rykard and the snake had fused into one being, one mind. I always thought his weird way of talking was just a side effect of basically trying to speak like a person but only had the body of a snake so everything comes out hiss like and drawn out. Sounds funny but is a pretty neat detail
Dung eater is chaotic evil too, but he is not a faction on his own. And i guess Godrick's faction. And the Children of the rot, even tho their "godess" rejects them. Lawful good : Redmane soldiers, Clearot knights, Miquella's knights. Neutral good : Carian Royal familly, Albinaurics, Dragons. Chaotic good : .... i don't think there is a faction that fits... Maybe the cult of undeath ? Fia and Rogier are pretty much irresponsible do gooders who want to save the undead. Oh, and of course, the Jarrs. Lawful neutral : Leyndell faction (Morgott), Fire giants, Golden order (even if manipulated) True neutral : Roundtable hold (by making the average of everyone in it) Raya lucaria academy. Chaotic Neutral : ..... patches. Beastmen of farum azula.
Dung eater might be good actually, it seeks to turn everyone into an omen so that there will be no more persecution against anyone and everyone can truly be equal. All the omen seek is the love they never got as kids so idk could end up being the good ending😂
I dunnooooooo, mohg don't strike me as lawful evil. Much more chaotic evil, given he serves the formless mother (a outer god of twisting pain and formlessness doesn't really give Lawful vibes) countlessly luring his followers in to be sacrificed to miquella whom he abducted (constant betrayal and lies are another sign of chaotic V lawful, not that lawful can't lie or betray, but Moghs whole base of operations and his running of faith is based on deception of those beneath him for his gain) I'm with you on the manor and the frenzied flame though. Personally I also feel the godskin be more neutral evil, as they are a fine balance between Moghs heinous acts of sacrifice and torture, but they also really do have an order, a hierarchy, and defined purpose out in the active world that isn't just slaughtering people for a faith based and partially unreciprocated "hope" as mogh, their killing has a directly achievable result of their design (they collect skin to grow in power to defy and slay gods) In truth, I think the only ones that properly fall into lawful evil are along the lines of the golden order, a very lawful establishment and anyone who calls them good is delusional xD
Favorite boss fight in the game! Knowing his story makes it even better. I heard Miyazaki said that Rykard is his favorite character and I can see why. The name Elden Ring Lore Storytime is such a vibe

He is probably my favourite lore wise, the fight itself has an awesome design and atmosphere but I really hate it's mechanics, I just dislike bullet hell attacks in FromSoft games and this bastard has a lot of those.
It was a cool boss fight but so far in terms of build up, scale and "gravitas" my favorite character/boss fight remains General Radhan. What a badass It felt like Avengers fighting Thanos in Titan
One of the places Martin's influence feels strongest is the characterization of named NPCs. While Rykard's motivations are justified, his means of doing things are pretty bad and his cause is secretly compromised by a secret ominous force (Stannis anyone?). At the same time Rya, a direct product of Volcano Manor who'd be another malevolent trickster in most other fantasy games, is essentially blameless and even endearing in her refusal to feel ashamed of nature.
Love watching these. Reminds me of being read stories as a kid. Learning these tidbits about the lore makes the games so much more enjoyable. Would love to see one on Maliketh or Placudisaax. Thanks for the awesome videos!

Rya's biological mother seems to have birthed a great number of monstrosities according to the item description, but sounds like it was some ritual gone wrong. Rya is so cute though, I love her.

@@kitetales when you complete Rya's questline, you get the Daedica Talisman which state the following : It is said that this woman, named Daedica, indulged in every form of adultery and wicked pleasure imaginable, giving birth to a myriad of grotesque children. So it's probable that it was this woman that birthed the manserpent. It's also said that Tanith was the godmother of Rya, not her true mother, and when she discover the truth, Tanith gives you a potion to allow Rya to forget everything she saw. I've listen to another video where the connection with the fingercreeper is made, it's a bit too similar to rykard hand to be a coincidence. So Rykard did other experiment in his manor to create living being.
Another fun detail about the Leyendell soldiers on Gelmir is that they went so mad that they actually succumbed to the frenzied flame, and they use it in combat against you.

I think Rykard's involvement in the knight of the black knives is understated. I think he was the one to actually orchestrate the death of Godwyn which is why he is so hated and considered blasphemous on top of the whole letting the serpent devour himself thing

I watch a lot of Elden lore videos, but I think your channel is my favorite on the subject. Not only are you much more clear and concise than most channels, you also capture the game’s sense of mythology and wonder in a more conventionally narrative format than the game. Kudos and keep up the good work.
I like how even though Rykard hated the Golden Order and those who sided with it, he still had a painting of Radahn in the manor. I guess there isn't anything quite as strong as FAMILEEEE

Your videos are great. There's a serious absence of lore videos from my typical sources, and so far you've given nothing but reliable information condensed into an easily digestible narration and I appreciate it. I can't really sort through it all myself. When I'm playing, I tend to focus on the fights ahead first, and then once I've made enough progress to be curious, there are just too many items for me to sort through when I want to find out about just one specific character. This really helps link them together and frame them better for me.

What excellent content!! I have to say, when I reached the horrors of Mt Gelmir, and Volcano Manor, I felt I found my true purpose playing Elden Ring. Nothing gave me more pleasure than becoming ridiculously powerful, over leveled, and exploring evey ounce of Volcano Manor, and laying waste to all the evil there. Especially Rykard. I allowed Tanith to live and to devour her husband. For what could be a more fitting end. Huzzah!

One of the darkest stories in the game imo, if not THE darkest. Volcano Manor was one of my favorite areas, I'm ashamed to admit I joined them instantly when I found it. It felt like I was joining the Sith Order lol. A lot of people think Rykard's voice actor was really goofy and over the top, but I think his line delivery fits perfectly a crazy heretic nuts enough to fuse his entire body with a giant immortal snake. He sounds insane and it's creepy. Fantastic video as I've come to expect in the short time I've been watching your channel, the attention to detail and the presentation are both top-notch. Keep up the great work!

Rykard feels like a character straight out of Berserk and looks like an apostle.

One of the darkest stories in the game imo, if not THE darkest. Volcano Manor was one of my favorite areas, I'm ashamed to admit I joined them instantly when I found it. It felt like I was joining the Sith Order lol.
A lot of people think Rykard's voice actor was really goofy and over the top, but I think his line delivery fits perfectly a crazy heretic nuts enough to fuse his entire body with a giant immortal snake. He sounds insane and it's creepy.

Thank you so much! :) And yes I definitely think there are some references there; the item descriptions for Tanith seem to suggest she charmed him, and I think that was probably foreshadowing for the same way he was drawn in by the serpent. The Omen twins will be a fun one!
