I find it so fascinating that like half of the demigods, and many of the most notable Tarnished (like the ones named in the opening cinematic), have such a strong desire to overthrow or alter the Golden Order in some fundamental way. It's almost like someone (coughcough Marika) is actually trying to arrange for that to happen

Rykard was the coolest & most memorable boss in the whole game imo. Such an amazing arena, volcano manor was such a scary & ominous place. All of the tortured albinaurics. My second favorite dungeon in the game after Stormveil Castle.
Yes but the fight itself was a bit gimmicky imo. The game rally encourages you to use the serpent hunter. Sure you don’t have to use it, but the fight just becomes unnecessarily challenging. If you use the serpent hunter, then it becomes a little too easy. Reminds me of the Yhorm fight in DS3. Everything else surrounding Rykard. The lore, the dungeon, the quest are all amazing though.
There is a third option instead of killing or giving the snake girl the potion. If you just leave after talking to her, you can return after beating Rykard to find a letter from her.
It's interesting that Ranni would turn to her older brother for the knowledge of how to enact her plan to rid herself of the GW's influence. This means that she must have suspected that Rykard was already opposed to it; that Rykard was actually the first to turn against the GW. Although, I doubt she knew exactly WHAT he was planning, ultimately.
It would be cool to be able to get rykards sword before it became the blasphemous blade. Maybe it could regen fp per kill and deal magic damage to reflect his carrian lineage?
It's not stated, but I theorize the reason why Morgott and the Leyndell forces were so set on killing Rykard is because he took the blame for Godwyn's death. We know he was close to Ranni. Finger creepers, marionettes, cuckoos, and abductors appear in both Raya Lucaria and the Volcano Manor. It's very clear that there is a relationship between the two houses. The most blasphemous act must have the murder of a god, let alone killing one's own godly family. And thus the Demigod who loved his family the most, Morgott, would stop at nothing to avenge his brother by killing the Lord of Blasphemy who had already cast aside his own godhood. I wonder if how Morgott would have reacted if he knew Ranni was behind everything?
I love Ranni and could give two shits about godwynn, the golden order is a cancer that forces its ideas onto others and punishes those who dont accept it, its the same way how religion treated heretics in the past, Ranni broke the cycle of suppression to have a world in where all forms of life can live without the meddling of ab outer god trying to force its influence onto others
I buy into that. I was already fumbling for the meaning of the Abductor Virgins in the Acedemy, and this makes a lot of sense. Plus we know from the traces that Ranni gave Rykard that he was obviously involved in the plot, and since Ranni was already dead the closest suspect would obviously be the guy next to the capitol who literally has traces of death in his house. Its like if someone was shot in a neighbourhood and you're the only one in a 3 Mile radius to own a gun.
Interesting counterpoint - If you subscribe to the idea that the Greater Will and golden order want to control the lives of the people then Rykard isn't really a bad guy for going against his family
I mean, yeah. He is opposing The Greater Will and that can be called a tyrannical entity. So going against his family isn’t a bad thing. But just because he fights an evil, it doesn’t mean he is good. He creates machines to abduct people and send them to an area to torture them. He consumes the flesh of others to add to his power. He leads a faction of killers. His tactics are evil. This is a story of evil fighting evil.

Okay so I'm gonna drop a lot of speculation, but it REALLY starts to make sense when though of with a historical lens. I think the distant land Rykard visited was Eochaid. I think Eochaid takes a lot after Roman history, yet with Gaelic names, this may be in relation to how many Celtic and Gaelic folk enslaved by the Romans. It becomes very clear that the Duelist enemies are of these gladiatorial games. Gladiators came in various appearances and "kits". You would have some with large shields, or some with small shields, some with just a net and Trident. I think a similar thing was done here with a different theme. The theme was probably based off of the serpents deb, where individuals would fight until only one remained. The item Coil Shield can be found here, a relic obviously from these gladiatorial games. An individual would probably be outfitted with both a coil shield and venomous Fang, representing the serpent itself. It would then be paired up with an individual like a duelist, the fight would be in a similar battle of inequity that the gladiators did: one would focus on keeping distance and poisoning their opponent, the other would be high in offensive power. Duelist helms are adorned with snakes showing that they were simply all painted as enemies of the Erdtree. The entire series of these games is also somewhat documented on Elemer's shield as his home is Eochaid. It shows a swordsman fending off death. The games must have had some focus on the strong defeating the weak, which was the Seed of though which ultimately created Rykard's Recusants. It also explains why it's called the "path of champions," it's literally in the same light as before. Only the strongest serpent stands in the end. I also believe that Eiglay, the serpent, was taken as a keepsake by Rykard and ultimately fed a taste of Godhood. Sidenote, Eochaid is where we get the Chariots from in the Catacombs as Eochaid is a Gaelic name that is derived from "Each" or "Horse".

Volcano Manor feels like a Bloodborne experience to me that's why its my fave to all area in the game.
