It was until Win95 came but Win95 was so unstable that MacOS 7.5 was still a much better option. MacOS 7 installation could last for years and crashing was rare while you have enough memory in your system.
@@AdrianoCROST you're an idiot and probably didnt use old mac system 1-9. that shit crashed WAY more then windows 95-98. it didnt even have multi tasking so if 1 app went down the whole system turned into sad mac idiot
Very nice video. A little constructive criticism: A better label would have been a tour of System 7.5 as that is what you are showing. Most of the features you talked about, (Apple Guide, Stickies, Launcher, Control Strip, Window Shade, etc.) were not part of System 7 but came out with System 7.5, 3 years later. I know it is a quibble but for historical sake the facts should be accurate to the version.
Yeah System 7 introduced many new features, and could deserve its own video, but this is mostly 7.5 stuff. It's like lumping all Win9x features together.
I'm admittedly a massive Android fan nowdays, but System 7 will always be near and dear to my heart. I learned so much about old Power Macs from my old subscription to Mac Addict. So much awesome shareware was available on the included CD-ROMS (did not have home internet access during this time). Getting a copy of ResEdit made these computers my own personal playground for tweaking. Those were the days.
Loved the MST3K clip. In late 1991, probably not that long after the scene in the clip was shot, I visited Best Brains in Eden Prairie, MN, where the show was made. They had both Macs and PCs there. The writers mostly used Macs, but I think maybe Trace Beaulieu (Crow) was a PC guy. In the viewing room, where they would screen movies over and over, coming up with riffs for the show, I saw Frank Conniff working at a Mac SE. In the control room, they had an Amiga with a Video Toaster system for doing screen graphics. At the time, they were working on promos for a Turkey Day episode.
I'm hoping you can help me out. I am running system 7.5.5 I upgrade a virtual hard drive image from 6.0.8. I compiled it, and upgraded it, but it seems to have retained the black and white desktop patterns from OS 6. I was wondering if you could help me switch those over?
@@ComputerClan Well I am trying to get the normal desktop patterns that are supposed to be in the system. My desktop patterns are black and white, while I've seen others are full color tiled patterns. I was wondering how exactly to switch over to those. I am running in 256 color mode, but I am not sure how to get color desktop patterns.
When I say "System 7" I really mean ALL of System 7 (System 7.x). Yes, I've looked at earlier releases. There's plenty of computers in my collection; I could probably drown in them.
“Manadatory” multitasking??? ... or did you mean preemptive multitasking. OS7 could run multiple apps but not at the same time. It would pause one when attention was brought to the other as opposed to cooperative multitasking which would run multiple apps at the same time even in the background. This didn’t come until MAC OSX.
If you look carefully, it’s not THAT super different from Mac OS X. Mac OS has kept a fairly similar UI design since the beginning, and to Apple’s strength, I believe.
Without Retro-Classes on, I think it is save to say that modern OS X might not be perfect and Apple keeps releasing "meh" Macs, however the overall stability of computers (and MacOS) dramatically increased during the past 25 years. Especially when you consider how many apps beeing run at the same time these days.
As a Windows fan I have to say, Macintosh System 7 is a winner for consumers over Windows 3.0 back in that time!

The first OS that I've ever used in my life. I was 10 or 11 and I loved it.
Same here, but when I was 4 on my old PowerMac 7100.

+8-Bit TechGuy I guess I just meant 7.x
I thought that too.

OMG, same here. MacAddict was THE BEST, too. I loved that mag. Nothing like it, nowadays. :-(

I think some of these features were introduced in System 7.5, 1994. It was a major update. System 7 was different.
I enjoyed using System 7 as a kid on the computers we had at school.
Your next Opreating System Software Showcase video should be on iOS 1 (Known as iPhone OS 1)
Love the background music, so 90s and suited the video.
This was the last official video under Real Deal Productions.
Really?
I was reading about that MST3K episode just before I watched this. :P
I have an ooollllld IIcx. I wonder if there's any way to get this thing running.
I can' t find where to enable control strip, I wanted to check it how it works, but I can't, maybe because I am on system 7.5 release 1?
Is the computer really that slow or it's just LCD lag?
LCD ghosting.
It's probably because it's a passive matrix LCD.
how did u get the control panel? i have mini vmac emulating a mac II running system 7.5 and i dont have that control panel
That moment when you are watching these videos, see an app that grabs your attention, try to type it in "Spotlight" and voila! It is still there!
ScriptEditor.
KEEP CIRCULATING THE TAPES!
How do you enable the control strip?
Which MacOS had the easter egg with Iguana and the flag, and when you clicked the flag a bunch it blew off into the distance?
Pretty sure that was MacOS 7.5.
I can understand the BGM is from Audionautix (I do read descriptions), but what's the name of the track so I can look it up on the site.
It's called Drifting2. Sorry for not having it in the description.
Thanks.
Also, it's OK. Everyone forgets things in a while (Which is normal).
When you said shift I always thought you said s***
How i can skip the login page? I don't remeber the password of my powerbook 1400c
0:03 They work well until they randomly hang or display a bomb message (which was way too often).
I need it to take it on-the-go!
I actually remember *waiting* for System 7... then I waited ON System 7.
Then bomb screen.

Love the new intro
Most of this is System 7.5+, did you even look at the earlier releases? You should rename the video to 7.5.

Mac System 7 vs iOS 7. The colors
I am a big Windows fan, but System 7 .x looks better than Windows 3.01, but did Mac have Special OS for workgroups like Windows?
Yes
In the under 301 club. Feels good.

I’m pretty sure System 7 was cooperative, not preemptive.
Computer Clan I stand corrected. I reversed the terms. Preemptive came when Openstep joined the party and begat OSX.
Watching it on macOS Catalina.
Is this a review or a commercial? You're way too excited about OS7 ;-)
when i used this first i found it slightly confusing

No, no no.
I used to have a powerbook g3 that had the same os this one has. I sold it for $100 because i had no use for it
That passive matrix display really gives its age away!
But can it run crysis?
Yep
I believe the question at hand should be whether or not it runs Skyrim.
Yep
At 0.1 fps
beautiful, still today is far above average ux
I grew up with Windows, but we did have Macs at school, so this still brings back a lot of fond memories for me

What about a tour of windows crap edition?
I hate the System 7 QuickTime, At Ease and Lido 7.56.
Quicktime improved with version 2.5 and beyond. At Ease was best suited for Kiosk and education usage.

Especially not back then. Classic Macs had memory problems that crashed the entire system. Windows handled it better even during the 3.1 days.
clarisworks sucked
Rubbish! Clarisworks was great. Lightwight, simple with lots of features.
