@@chrisbassartist4344 Of course not, though its better when a band carves out their own unique sound like they do in later albums. All their stuff is great, I just think their last two albums are more indecitive of their sound.

You can really hear the Tool/Opeth influences on the early Soen releases: Cognitive and Tellurian. They do branch out more later on, but they are a Tool/Opeth lovechild for sure.
@@TheErazar Riverside music is so spaceful, I think of them as a new Pink Floyd, even while their former guitarist Piotr Grudziński - totally brilliant in his Gilomurish style solos - has passed away.
Really enjoyed this piece - a new band to me. And you learn so much by listening to Doug's analysis. Really liked the bass and percussion. Cheers Doug!
In the last year or 2 Soen has become one of my favorite bands. They always have such beautiful melodic parts in their songs. Some of my favorites are "The Words", "River", "God's Acre", "Lucidity", "Martyrs", and "Illusion". Please check out more of this underrated band!
Martin Lopez! My favorite Opeth drummer, that guy played tasty drum parts in Opeth in their prime, I was really glad to see him applying his skills in another band. And as much as early Soen is compared to Tool, it's a first reaction, I thought the same but once you really listen, they kinda don't really sound like Tool:) I'm not sure if they did it on purpose, but imo the early sound attracts the people that are into Tool and then filters the people who stay for their unique approach, which was honed as they matured.
- I just saw Soen in Atlanta (12-04-2022) their first American tour, this song was in the setlist. They put on one "hell-uva" show! The songs were not note for note album copies. Improvisation was tastefully sprinkled in, which only made their performance all the better. A group of true musicians, true to their art!
Hey doug, been watching for a while and the more i see you the more i like you and not just your wisdom. You are a great guy, i can see a great spirit inside you. Thanks for the content brother.
Soen has a TON of great music and meaningful lyrics. You should try out Illusion or Covenant for videos that are heavy. Penance they didn't do a video for but the song is really great.
Now this is what i call a true Reaction!! You give a lot of interesting insights from the music in a theorical perspective.. Also dig into the lyrics... Yes, this album sounds a lot of Tool.. You mentioned that the bass is all over the song, and that's because Steve Di'Giorgio is a monster bassits. You've got a new fan and suscriber
i really enjoy Soen! Was waiting for that! I think their song Antagonist has a great video and lyrics, think you'd enjoy it. Also, it hits me in the gut, i can't really put my finger on it, don't know what it is, but for me, it's a powerful song!
Doug - it would be great to have another analysis of a further Soen song such as "The Word" from Tellurian.🙂 this band needs to be put into spotlight much more as they are criminally underrated. They have substance, a unique style and such a box load of good songs.
Reminds me of A Perfect Circle ⭕️ Pretty cool sound Still think Leprous would make for a great reaction Maybe Nighttime Disguise 🥸 or Shadowside or Out of Here off their latest release? The whole thing is awesome
Thank you for this. One of my fave bands. I think 1 song from each record would be a great journey for you I honestly do. The later albums defo nod towards some Floyd type stuff. Just amazing. 💙🎶🤘
I assume you know they're currently on tour, you gonna see em? I have a ticket for a show in a couple of weeks but I'll admit it I'm a little scared of getting covid (there's flying involved too)
Dynamics, dynamics, dynamics! Soen arranges their songs with contrasting sections. They arrange clear differences between verse, pre-chorus and chorus sections. Still, the flow of the song is not disturbed.
Doug, you NEED to react to As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls by Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays. Not a lot of people know this masterpiece, but i'm sure that if you react to it everyone will be super happy!
For something much different, I'm going to start peppering this place with Moron Police suggestions. That's one band that needs some exposure. They're a pop-prog band with obvious influences from Zappa, Billy Joel, Mr. Bungle, Elton John, and Devin Townsend. Super FUN music, but incredibly well composed. So please react to Moron Police's Captain Awkward.
Nice shirt :) Which reminds me… more Opeth please! And some Enslaved, maybe. And Area, definitely some Area (especially from "1978 gli dei se ne vanno, gli arrabbiati restano!").
Please listen or react to their newest release “EMDR”. Its a new bonus track off their Lotus album. Its honestly one of the greatest songs ive ever heard.
Iron Maiden, Opeth, Tool, Soen... I think the next logical band you should react to is Riverside. + listen to the song Pluton from Soen. Love and respect 🙏🏼.
Amazing!!! My favorite band, they have a Lot of better and complex songs (ennui, opal, Pluton, lascivious, antagonist) My dream is see You analize GRAVES by Caligulas Horse, maybe the Best prog metal song in years
Music videos are funny things... "We're going to have the singer pretend to sing. The rest of the band? I don't know, stand there and look sullen." Not that I have a better idea.
Not really the song I would have picked for them. They’ve become far better songwriters in their later releases. Maybe would have gone with Illusion or Tabula Rosa for earlier releases. You should check out Katatonia next. Opeth’s sister band. Maybe Lacquer or Residual.
Sounds like he went through an abortion and is conflicted about it now. This song stirred up some very intense emotions here. The lyrics on the soen website are accurate, words matter. Amazing job but I would love you to listen to it again, look at the floating foetuses and the one in the head in the end.
I 'think' this guitarist is still with the band, helping on songwriting & producing, but just not playing on the albums. Someone with more knowledge plz correct me if I'm wrong about that.
Hi Doug thanks again for your interesting vid/analysis/reaction upon that really nice piece of music. May I suggest you to take a listen to a canadian "metal" band named Voivod ? Voivod has been releasing albums for a long time and they definitely created their own universe between trash metal, prog music and more. Their former guitarist Denis D'Amour Piggy (RIP) was the king of dim/aug chords progressions and his successor Daniel Mongrain (Chewy) is definitely a great guitarist/composer, giving a slight Allan Holdsworth taste to their universe. This is actually not a good example of Soen---pretty much anything off of Cognitive is a Tool clone, *especially* this song (although more APC than Tool in the vocals, yes I know they are the same guy!). Try Ennui off of Tellurian or Orison off of Lykaia.
Yes they're a band that sounded like Tool but as time passes you realize they Tool better then Tool if that makes sense. If Maynard ever got replaced this guy could make Tool even better.
You cannot claim to be a Classical composer and comment on Metal songs on Mondays (like simple Metallica baroque), and NOT do DIMMU BORGIR. It'd be like watching porn for the dialogue, missing that people are having sex!
I wish they(soen) would hold out there choruses longer. Its not enough. Should be repeating 3x not once . They do it a lot on their songs . Its really lame . Martyrs opal and a few others . Am i wrong ?
