I live in Winlaton and didn’t know in advance about the demolition. One Sunday morning I was awoken by the noise - my bedroom window vibrated and rattled loudly. I got up and looked out of the window that overlooks the Tyne and instantly knew something looked different, then it dawned on me the huge cooling towers were gone.
Hi, I was only six years old when this happened but both my grandparents lived on Clarks Hill Walk in Newburn and I would sit on a Sunday afternoon on the back of their sofa and watch the men work at the power station over the valley and wonder where the pylons on the other side up at Ryton disappeared over the hill to. This happened on a a Sunday I'm sure because when we went over Scotswood to Grans the towers had gone and I remember asking my parents why. I can't remember what time the demolition was done though, it must've been earlier in the day.
I wouldn't have been there till teatime but I remember the day as my mam and dad were wondering if we could get to grans or if the road would be blocked.

Malubvra. Yeah, it was a Sunday. I think it was around 9:30/10 in the morning.
