    Weirdly i like the lack of talking in most of this video. It find it relaxing to watch and listen to them work. It's almost like blacksmithing ASMAR without the porn subtext

    Idea for a video that I think would be cool. You should show how to make a guillotine tool. It is a unique and extremely helpful tool for anyone who forges. Love the effort and work you put into this channel!

    if you want a good anvil thats cheap get a scrap forklit fork and take the back part hammer a bevel on it and weld it to a huge chunk of mild steel and weld a horn to it as well
    a 7 step anvil thats high carbon

    Tongs are one of the first things you should learn to make.
    The basic pattern was burned into my brain by the instructions that taught me.

    Im a chef and once I retire i want to be a blade smith why because it is an art where you don’t need to be pushing others around to achieve greatness being a black smith is for those who want to be responsible of everything you are the product that you produce no where to hide im really a fan of Elia I watch him since forget at arms a dream would be able to be taking courses of the man and the team.

    Always bear in mind when hogging your wood, a gentle thrusting motion is key, along with a steady grip on the wood and some pseudo 70s funk music to keep in time. And, you know, ease into the friction.
    Now that you've read this, go back to 11:05 to study correct form. =p

    I have that anvil, the horn is soft but the face and tail are hard. I'd also recommend rounding the edges because they are real sharp.

    I have made a couple pair of bladesmithing tongs very similar to those. Took a while to figure how to make them. Still struggle making tongs a bit, just need to make more. Big Blu sent me a couple pair of v bit they are probably one of the nicest used to date.
    Have to check yours out.

    Not a tool you can use to make more tools, but one I use every day: a Dutch cheese knife. I'd love to see you guys forge one of those - might even buy it ;) - but I'll settle for any tool that can be used right away: how about a chef's knife with a TH-cam chef coming on to test it?

    I must have watched this 100 times trying to forge these myself.... one attempt or another, I’ll figure it out lol. Not “hard” for some but most of my focus has been making knives, and I’ve had to make a lot of tools to make up for losing access to a proper shop 😔

    Ceramic wool is not as irritating as fiberglass in my experience, and from what I've read is not harmful like asbestos or anything. Probably not great to breathe but it won't kill you cutting a few feet to make one forge. Safety police on TH-cam comments love to call out.

    What is the reason for using your tooling under your work on the power hammer instead of on top?

    I made some tongs a while back an drilled the pivot hole and cold set the pin, felt like I was cheating at the time but I feel much better about it now :) could you start with smaller stock for these tongs? I guess upsetting the pivot area would be more work than tapering down from there. Love these videos!

      SPE you could use flat stock... then the shape is basically just two tapers with the pin boss in the middle

      Timing and communication if you are working with a striker. And helps keep a bit of momentum in the hammer I find as well

    I bought my 235lbs anvil for about 240$. It was a long hunt, to find one close to my home town, doesnt cost a fortune and is in fairly good condition. It has a stamp "MZM" , if someone know what factory have those letters in name please let me know. I am from Poland, so maybe someone from Germany or Russia recognise it.

    Nice tongs, would have liked to see the whole process, and the video on the ribbon burner, there wasn't much on firing it up and how it heats the stock and what size stock, how much pressure do you run it at etc. Bit disappointing.

      Lenblacksmith Matt said they run it at about 1 psi in this video, and it's a dying big forge so they could definitely heat up some big stock, if it fits in the door it will heat up.

    I love this channel. So when you brought out this video on tong making and said you are selling them I quickly went over to your web site and ordered. That was Dec 20th. since then I have not received any acknowledgment that you shipped or have you returned my 2 emails even though you say you will return them within 2 days. I’m in the middle of a project and was hoping to use them but it seems this is the only way you may answer my request. I have sold to items on eBay since I ordered and they have received them. Maybe I made a mistake. I have followed you guys from when you were on Baltimore forge. Hope I can get my tongs soon.

    Depending on the price, I'd like to buy a pair! Beng on Social Security and disabled doesn't leave me a lot for tooling! I'm not strong enough anymore to make them myself so, I will have to buy a pair if I can't make them! I checked your website but you have NO tools at all! Did you stop making them,or what??? I would need something that would fit 1/4 X 2 inch material!

    That yellow tape crap is nothing big! Air test it! I've used white tape and had no issues! If everything is tight, it's all good.

    You can run natural gas, but natural gas does not burn as hot and is not, therefore, as efficient as propane.

    The irony in making tools is you need tools. You need tongs to make tongs, you need a hammer to make a hammer, you need a knife to make a knife etc.

      actually u dont need tongs to make tongs ;) I used my hand to hold bar when i was forging mine, if it is long enough u wont burn ur skin or glove, if not u can soak glove with water.

      You actually don't need tongs to make tongs!! With long enough stock or a coal forge where you can concentrate heat to where you are forging, you can use the tongs that God gave you!!

    i dont understand how they work their steel so hot. my shit cracks at that heat every time. unless the camera sees color THAT differently

      Are you using high carbon steel. I find most mild steel works just fine at the higher temperatures. The camera does mess with the color quite a bit though.

    You know who else are manly men? All those miners with black-lung. Being "manly" doesn't make you any less likely to suffer immensely from respiratory diseases... what a terrible terrible excuse. If you want to not be safe, just say that. But don't perpetuate this idea that being manly is going to help you in any way.
