    Some verbs change meaning depending on whether they are followed by a gerund or infinitive verb. Learn about three of them - ‘stop’, ‘regret’ and ‘go on’ - in this Masterclass with Sian:

      Hi, you might see 'to' followed by verb-ing when 'to' is a preposition, for example: 'I'm looking forward to starting university'. But we don't usually use the infinitive with 'to' before a verb-ing. A sentence like 'I want to starting university' would be considered wrong.
      A sentence like 'I'm starting to like you' is grammatically correct - but the verb-ing is the continuous form, not a gerund. We hope that's helpful :-)

    I've been teaching English for 4 years and this might be the only grammar I haven't been able to explain easily, I always find myself confused. I know how verb patterns work, this just comes naturally and logically to me. When I speak it, I don't even stop to think how am I supposed to say the next verb pattern, then I do it correctly, but when it comes to explain why, I just simply can't.

    It seems to my a little bit difficult this topic because some verbs do not have a specific rule to choose gerund or infinitive. I suppose to improve my memory through learning this kid of verbs could be a good idea. Thank you indeed for your lessons.

  • @damianeastwood
    @damianeastwood 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hello, I noticed someone else pointed this out but it is worth repeating. A gerund is NOT the -ing form of a verb. The -ing form of a verb is called a present participle. The present participle is only used in the continuous tenses (or progressive tenses if you are American) and it is always proceeded by the verb "be". For example, I am (be) swimming, I was (be) swimming, I will be (be) swimming, I have been swimming, I had been swimming, I will have been swimming. In all these sentences "swimming" is not a gerund it is a verb participle. If swimming is used as the object of another verb such as I like swimming or I enjoy swimming or if it is the subject of a verb such as: Swimming is my favourite sport, then this is not a verb form, it is considered to be a noun form. A gerund can also be the object of a preposition, for example "I am not good at swimming." or "I am reading about swimming." It helps me to ask the question can I replace this -ing word with a common noun like "chocolate". I like chocolate, I enjoy chocolate, Chocolate is my favourite sport. When an -ing word is the subject or the object of a verb, or the object of a preposition and it can be replaced with a common noun you have a gerund. It is sometimes said that a gerund is a noun that looks like a verb. I hope this helps someone to better understand this topic. I agree with some other commenters here, this can be quite tricky to explain to English learners. When you learn a new verb also learn the correct verb patterns. The dictionary(dot)cambridge(dot)org website includes verb patterns along with sample sentence for each verb.
