This was the gun I was issued when I did my Swedish military service way back. It was fun to shoot and very easy to maintain. Supersimple and very reliable. Never jammed .. clean and light. Nice to see it used. Thanks for the video.

When it was time for his conscription, he brought his own with a welded barrel for accuracy, and only used his issued one for inspections, where his officers kept wondering how he kept his gun looking like it was almost never fired.

No, it was discontinued in 2007. The Swedish Home Guard were the last ones to use it. Any remaining ones are used for field target competitions by private owners.
Excellent gun, especially when used with the m/39B ammo.
I served in the Swedish Navy and had this as my service weapon, even though we would later use the AK-4. The Kpst m/45 will only jam under 1 condition, using the cartridge collector attachment. I swear to god I had mine Jam 7 times because a cartridge would find its way back into the chamber.

I'm getting all nostalgic. We had these in the Danish navy when I was in back in the early nineties. so simple and so good, one exercise was to assemble it under water and come up blasting... first to shoot got a days leave, last had to dive for casings.
I used one in militær praktik in 2000, it was a fun gun to use (we actually got to use them with blanks).

The Swedish K is an incredible robust subgun. I remember practicing single shots out to 300 M with it. The mags, being all steel are practically indestructible. Thanks for a good video!
I used this during my military service in the Swedish army back in the days. Got a marksmanship 🏅 Still remember how one of my friends missed to check for the last bullet in the barrel before we got onto the truck to go back to the barracks after a shooting exercise. When the truck hit a bump, he fired a live round through the canvas ceiling sitting right next to the lieutenant. Not good! He did not go home that weekend.. But no one got hurt😎
But... it fires from an open bolt? There would never be any bullet in the barrel in a firing position.
@@yoriisoet Sounds very much like he forgot he had a loaded magazine in and didn't engage the transport safety.
@@Atzy In that case, he must have changed mags in a way that's not in accordance with SOP.
If you are following the SOP, you should never have a loaded mag while the bolt is in the forward position (unless you had a misfire). With or without engaging the transport safety.
@@yoriisoet ... or must have closed it before removing the magazine, thus pushing a cartridge into the chamber without firing it. This is also why you should not transport it with a loaded magazine and bolt closed - a harder bump could be sufficient to move the rather heavy bolt far enough back to catch a cartridge, close again and fire it. There have been fatal accidents happening that way.

My favourite weapon when I was in the Irish Army Reserve. It was used extensively by the Swedish & Irish Army in the Congo from 1960 - 1964. Brilliant trigger and an indestructible magazine.
Swedish army found it's stopping power lacking in the Congo and developed a new cartridge that remedied that.
Did the Irish use a bajonett with them? I know the Swedes used a ridiculous long bajonett with the K-pist during the Congo mission.
@@Plastpackad yes, the Irish armours came up with a attachment (as they do) that accepted a Lee Enfield No 4 Mk 2 baynot. There are some photos on websites and Facebook pages dedicated to the Congo Crisis. The Irish found the same problem with the 9mm ammo - lack of stopping power as most of the native warriors were high on local drugs when they attacked. When I joined in 1981 the baynot attachement had been removed.

I was gonna make a mention of this, as while its famous for being used in Nam by MACV-SOG, the Swedish K's slightly less famous but equally impressive deployment was at the battle of Jodatville in the southern Congo during the peacekeeping mission there. I just learned about it recently and its very shameful that those men who fought there weren't recognized until many of them had passed.

One of my fav scenes in the movie 'RED' was John Malkovich's character coming upon Bruce WIllis's character's weapons cache and finding one of these and reverently saying "Swedish K!!!"

@Henric Carlsson in War of the Worlds they use a Carl Gustaf recoilless rifle(Granatgevär m/48 Carl Gustaf) and two javelins on one of the tripods.
50 years old Swedish guy here, this brings back memories from my army service.
I did my service in the signal corps, we were probably the last ones use this gun in the Swedish armed forces, since if we had to engage in combat the situation had to be pretty bad.
Although not officially ok with the army rules , you could get a really accurate sub machine gun if you welded the barrel to the frame.
I think I'm going to have peasoup with pork for supper today to make today my nostalgia complete, but I'll skip all the freezing, lack of sleep and the foot blisters.

Actually, the sound of this brought back some memories from my childhood. Just outside my town, the army had a regiment where they usually where out on the fields shooting with this gun. I never saw this gun up close, but could often hear the shooting from a distance.
Really enjoyed the shots showing the effect on target from behind the shoulder! They give much more of an idea of the accuracy of full-auto fire on at close range (Larry controls pretty much any weapon system very well so it can be difficult to tell if a weapon is difficult to keep on target in full auto)
Glenn Holcomb From the video it even seems to be a constant recoil system. The bolt compresses the return spring travelling rearward but doesn’t seem to be hitting the back of the receiver
I owned a S&W 76 the bolt slamming forward more of an issue than recoil and proper technique solved that easily. The MP5 is a delight after the S&W.
The M45 is really easy to shoot. You don't have to be a pro to get good results.

It is very easy to use.
Had one of these when I did my military service in 1979. They were still used for personal defense by officers and various other personnel not in the front line. We used a hotter 9mm round with a harder jacket than the normal pistol round. Could be effective up to 100 meters with some practice. Small and not too heavy, and basically consists of eight pieces when you take it apart. Much easier to carry than the AK 4 (H&K G3) some had to lug around. :)
I would say 100 meters with a less trained gunner. 200 meter is mostly a piece of cake for a well trained gunner.
I remember seeing this gun in a gun catalog years ago and being totally enamored with it, happy to see you covering it!

This gun was still used by gangway guards in the Swedish Navy when I did my conscript service in 2001. Unlike how it's being used in this video we were taught to never hold it by the mag. Really like the slo-mo shots!

Just Loves it, had it as a my service gun for a couple of years.
And this really A-model isn't often you see. Biggest risk is that the end-cap get loose you get the bolt and spring in the face.
That is way the B came to be.
B model has a hook on top side of the end cap(for those that haven’t seen a B)
I had the "A model" when I was in the Army 1986-87, and never had an issue with it. Reliable, quite accurate at 50 meters and very good at 100 meters. I really miss it.
@@bjornh4664 Yes, i remember one training session at the shooting field and between the target shootings at 100 meter we took a short break, one in the group placed his "k-pist" at the snow chains at our Massey Fergusson tractor, while the driver started the tractor and drive over the "k-pist" with full power, the friend was shocked when he saw the result, i told him let us take it apart and change the pipe, so we did, we tested it directly after assembling and hit the 100 meter targets perfectly :) hahaha that was a quality gun made for the job !!!
I actually witnessed a guy getting the spring and bolt in his face once. The end cap hook had broken off. Not sure which version he had.
@@Christian-rj2yc If it had the hook, it was the 45B; the 45 didn't have it. It was exactly that kind of thing the hook was supposed to prevent, but then, it sounds very much like a freak accident.

My father had one of these for many years. I was more than thrilled to shoot it! Those were the days..
I shot with one of these few years back at the range. Instantly became my favorite and even surpassing the Suomi KP/-31 (and this is coming from a Finn).
Recoil of "Kaarle Kustaa" is so easy to control, even on full auto.
Accuracy up to a 100 meters was quite good also.
I would recommend for every gun enthusiast to try out the M/45. 'thou these are just my opinions.
There is no bigger compliment for something Swedish than a Finn giving high praise to it. Then you know it's really good quality. For example the M/45, Mats Sundin and Peter Forsberg.

A Kpist (the gun shown) has nowadays one situation where it is better than most modern weapons.
Having 3 trained dogs and 3 people with this gun, is hard to defeat if they defend a building. The dogs makes the assailants flinch and change priority so the guns might be used in the most beneficial way.
In Sweden we call these "K-pist" which is short for "kulsprutepistol". The english translation would be "machinegunpistol".
The m/45B was the most common one used in Sweden. Swedish police used the m/45BE which was modified to allow single shot mode.

@Star Lord Well my grandfather won marksmanship medals with the 45b and served with it in Katanga Province, including the attack on the provincial capital. Saying it's bad as if that's the one, single truth is misleading.
Used it during my military service - No problems hitting a man sized target at 150m. Although you had to aim a little high to hit at that distance. Later firing at the same target with the assault rifle was really easy though, just point and shoot... ;)

You expect accuracy from a submachinegun, LOL you may have served in the army but that does not exactly give you high IQ, I have not served in the army but even I realise that a SMG effective range is at best 100 to 150 metre even if its rated at 200 or even 300 for some but even at 150 you really need a long barrel on a SMG to hit effectively something VERY few do have, not even the MP5 is all that accurate beyond these ranges.
Lets be more real here okay? To begin with combat range is still within 200 metre and in real combat situations you never really shoot that accurate specially when you got fucking mortar shells landing around you and enemies shooting at you with light machineguns.
Its called combat stress its a serious issue hence why all the projects to create guns that fired two rounds in rapid succession or three round bursts came to be in the 70s and 80s.
Its also why majority of casualties in most wars since Boer war have been from artillery and sickness.
Something beautiful about open bolts, it's like it just kisses the rear of the cartridge good night before bouncing back off.

@@allywilkeforsenate not necessarily, if your receiver has some excess space behind the bolt for the rear spring to function and optimal grooves then the rubbish that tends to muck up and jam the firearm will be pushed to the back. You can observe this system in the Owen gun, which was loved by Aussies used within the pacific jungles

There's a story from the incident that sais a soldier told Major Bonde, Sir you've been shot.
Major Bonde looked down at the blood and said, it can't be mine, I'm blue blooded.
(Bonde is family of noble heritage)
This Bonde family has a long history of being war heroes. Back in 1705 there was a Swedish officer named Claes Bonde who supposingly charged 500 enemies with only 20 men of his own, at a river near Warsaw - Poland. He, together with all of his men died during this attack, but it gave the Swedish army nearby enough time to prepare and ultimately win the following battle at Warsaw 1705.

In sweden each soldier issued with this weapon was also issued with a speed loader. Since the ammo came in the box in a special frame, it was easy to load a full magazine in less than 15 seconds. From mag remove out of the gun, to mag into the gun and fully loaded again 15 seconds or less. However one did have more than one magazine, most carried four magazines.
I've served in the Swedish air force in the beginning of the eighties. An we were instructed to not hold the hand around the magasin. The right way to hold it was in front of the magazine. There is also an issue when you put the weapon apart for cleaning. The rifle barrel never come back in the same position when you secure it with the big barrel nut. So you needed to adjust the aim after every cleening.
So far seen ONE video where it was held with the proper grip. If I would've used this grip I would be on the receiving end of a shouting of using the proper grip. HARD!
Yeah I get frustrated every time I see someone hold the magazine and explain it as a feature. We had the exact same experience in the late 90's when we were working up towards the AK5. Always hand in front of the magazine and to use the sling for support. Tigerns ränder. 😆

The best sub machine gun ever made. There are two features you missed. 1. The speedloader special made for the 36 round stripper clip, that virtually loads a full mag in 2.5 seconds, and 2. that there is a police model with semi auto selector. Furthermore, there is a model where you can fit a M94/14 bayonete on. FUn fact: The Swedish M39B 9mm were forbidden in the US since the penetrated the police bullet proof wests, and was called "cop-killers". Lastly, take away that magazine steering, and you can fit a Soumi 50 round magazine, or a Soumi 72 rounds round magazine.

@@bengtgronlund9447 You could immerse the Owen in deep mud, pull it out and it would still function because the bolt is isolated from the retracting handle. That made it ideal for jungle warfare in conflicts like Vietnam where other guns would routinely jam. The fact that the magazine was a top loader meant that infantry soldiers could get very low to the ground during engagements like the Battle of Long Tan.
@@catinthehat906 Sounds like you speak about the M45. Anyway, you could attach 3 types of magazines to the M45. Either the M45B 36 round, and if you removed the magazine guide to the M45, you could use the 50 round Soumi 31 magazine or the round 72 round magazine of the Soumi. You would load the 36 round magazine from a speed loader in 3 seconds. -Owen....my GOD!
@@bengtgronlund9447 The M45 was an open bolt gun like most submachine guns of it's type and so prone to jamming with the ingress of dirt. The Owen saw extensive service in South East Asia during WW2 as well as Korea and Vietnam, unlike the M45 that never had anything like that sort of testing in a major conflict.
I was issued one when i served in danish army from 84 to 85, The first 3 months I had an M1 Garand, which I was sad to let go, but getting this made the farewell easier.
Used the k-pist m/45B during my basic training and loved it. Sadly it was removed from active service shortly afterwars so I spentm ost of my 17 years in the Swedish Armed Forces with the AK4 and AK4B as my service weapons. As a radio operator, and later machine gunner, I would have prefered the m/45B my service weapon to be honest.
I carried one for a while when I was assigned to a reconnaissance unit in Phu Bai, I Corps tactical zone. As I recall, it was rugged, reliable and accurate. Later ended up with an X177E1 and when I was reassigned to an aviation assignment, I traded both to some friends at a nearby Special Forces compound for a M34 3/4 ton truck so I would have my own transportation to the beach when I wasn’t flying.
Swedish K sounds like a Scandinavian breakfast cereal.

Har bara själv skjutit det en gång i lumpen (-89) Det var en furir som ville byt låna med min AK4 som hade kikarsikte under en skarp skjutning, han tyckte den var häftig. Vart förvånad att rekylen nästan var obefintlig, väldigt trevligt minne.

Man, the photography y'all got is getting better and better. The lone rotating shell that was going nowhere in a great hurry really sold it to me.
Had chance to use one in training. Easy to fire off single shots and quite accurate. We got those from Sweden as military aid. For blank firing they had seperate smoothbore barrel, with treads at the muzzle wich was more narrow than 9mm and blankfiring adaptor which was seperate piece and had tendency to become loose after continous firing. Also it used blank ammo with wooden tips. The only disadvantages i noticed- was the weight, and that the rivetts which held magazine housing was becoming loose- and it fell off, i saw several smgs in storage with that sort of problem.
well the first version of the m/45 had a removable mag well for it to be able to take the 50 round mags for the k-pist m/37-39 (Swedish licence version of the Finnish KP-31 Suomi). This was changed with the m/45B version. it also added two external locking hooks for the back cap since it also tended to wiggle loose and, along with the spring and possibly the bolt, hit the person firing it in the face during continous firing. The issue with the blank firing adapter was solved with a locking ring that prevented it from wiggling free as you describe.

Nick Thorp I wouldn't call it a service excatly, since i am not serving on full time- it was in the Weekend "Warriors" in Latvia/ Baltic region one of the many ex Soviet republics. We actually had a variety of smallarms, which we received from Sweden- AK-4's ( Swedish version of HK G3), KSP-58B's (Swedish version of FN MAG58), CG M2's and the CG-M45's.

When I did my army service in Sweden a guy got shot in the back that way. Remember reading about it in the army service newspaper. But it only fires one shot, no? The bolt is in the pulled back position and it fires one shot when it is shaken loose when hitting the ground?

My go to gun in the early nineties when doing my stint in the SwAF as a meteorologists assistant (Carl Gustav m/45B). Reliable and uncomplicated for self defense.
Better performance than you think for a k-pist :
100m standing and 1/1 target ("helfigur") = always a hit (single shot fire)
100m kneeling and 1/2 target ("halvfigur") = always a hit (single shot)
60m laying down with elbow support from ground and 1/7 target (headshot) = 9 of 10 a hit (single shot)
Can only talk for myself but I think that most shooters can accomplish same results with CG m/45B.
With the 9mm sk ptr m/39B (tombak plated) you get penetration on "normal" body armor within normal combat distances for a k-pist (i.e. not ceramic plates though). 9mm sk ptr m/39B was introduced after combat experince in Kongo in the 60's resulting in flatter bullet trajectory and better penetration.
Comment on the video :
Don't grab the magazine with your left hand, instead place it just in front of the cartridge ejector extending into the barrel shroud (it won't get hot as it's not in contact with the barrel!). You will get more precise shots that way as you don't "wobble" the gun. Also the barrel shroud seems to be loose or perhaps bad threads on your copy?
And don't slam the magazine in with the bolt in that position. It can go off, and did so for one of the soldiers in my company during training. Lucky it was just blanks otherwise the guy in front would had bin hit. Now he only got a ringing ear.

This is right up there with the PPS-43 as one of my favorite sub guns
In short range combat this gun is amazing. Easy to single tap and fantastic control at full blast. Maintenance is a breeze due to the crazy simple construction.
Thats a "old" version. When i did my military service 2002 the rear reciver cap had an extra hook welded on top of the reciver due the powerfull cartridge 39b could fautige the original latches within the reciver resulting in blow back of the reciver cap. #fun facts.

This is a sub machine gun you can hit the target with all rounds in the burst. Perfect rate of fire,not to fast. Many people in sweden say this is a "pea gun" dont know alot about weapons. A 9mm will do pretty much damage far longer than most think. But it is a close combat weapon for sure.

you ddi not look at the barrel to see the stamped number from 1-9. #2 and #6 meant either hold low or high. I got a marksmans badge with the thing!!
While you were shooting this Swedish K, I can see why SOF in Nam used them. Superb weapon.
The best thing with this k-pist was the loader, 36 rounds into the mag in no time!
Yeah, filling a mag in under ten seconds was great. The guys with the AK4 (Swedish version of the H&K G3) managed perhaps 6-7 rounds in the same time.
As I've just watched Ian on Forgotten Weapons go through both the Port Said and the CG m/45, it would appear that the PS are identical to the orginal CG. However, the one favoured by the Swedish military was the B-model, which had a number of changes to it. Most of their original guns were refitted as B-models. The notable differences were a fixed magazine-well, as opposed to the removable one on the A-model, an improved bolt-buffer and a different barrel shroud.
There was also a C-model, with a bayonet mount for guard duty and a police-version with selective fire.
I have a cousin who does security contract work overseas for DSS and he had a photo of one on the hood of a US Embassy BMW in Nigeria, Maybe it belonged to the local security group outside the gate...

Many many conscripts have used this gun. My dad was one of them. Good stuff.
The special forces version was equipped with a suppressed barrel.
Growing up with my father in the army having m/45 as a service weapon he learned me to shoot that when I was 8 years old. Brings good memories putting thousands of rounds at the range.

I am a Swede and did my mandatory military service back in 1988 when the Soviet Union was a major threat. This M/45 which we called "k-pisten" plus the AK4 (Heckler & Koch G3A3) was in my cabinet. The M/45 was a joke on long distance: You could literally see the bullet lose height when using it at 150 meters and you had to point it upwards to hit the target. But on short range it was a blast to use. Quite little recoil and a VERY sturdy weapon. Built like a tank! You could almost use it as an axe to chop wood and put it in mud and it would still work. Easy to carry when you flipped the stock. BTW, there was always an attached pouch on the side to gather the used rounds. An old school weapon but I liked it.

We actually used these as our primary no: 2 in the early 2000 when I was enlisted. Great for CQB and close combat. This gun is a laser beam as seen in the video. With taped “double mags” you can put a lot of bullets effectively up to 60-70 meters.
For long range we had AK-5C.

My father used This in the military training in the late 50s early 60s. amazing that there still some of them in working order.
although the trigger pull looks like it sucks ass, this, to me, has my preference in fire rate.

Haha, love it. I had the M45 when I served in the 90's. I get nostalgic when I see this and it would be nice to take up the M45 shooting again. There are dedicated shooting clubs and series over here.
was taught to never hold the magazine, instead hold infront of it... and for the love of god. press down the little thingie when u screw the ring back that secures that outer thing :D ( up at the pipe):....
That rifle bring back memorys. Used back in the day by the airforce ground technical personel. In sweden its called K-pist. Really good weapon for short range.
Shooting it feels like holding a sewing machine, that spits out bullets with almost no recoil. Just point and shoot. The bullets hit what you're aiming at.
I tried this baby once during my service in Sweden and loved the smooth bouncy recoil its a breeze to shoot!

I used more than one SK in Laos 1971-73 . 9mm and super reliable . There were suppressed versions as well . A video regarding the S&W M-39 & 59 suppressed handgun would be nifty . Great video and Thanks .

This is the gun I was issued when I joined the Swedish Home Guard (Walmart version of the U.S National Guard in terms of equipment) youth. Loved shooting it!

That sound was my childhood in Sweden at the 70th and 80th! Living close to an army regiment
Dad wielded one of these during his conscription. He served in the artillery in the mid 1970s, and the M/45 was his service weapon. He says that this weapon will never let you down. Back in those days, a wide range of different units in the Swedish Armed Forces used the M/45, as the AK4, a Swedish variant of the German G3 rifle, was issued for the infantry.
To this day, however, the Swedish infantry, or pretty much any professional soldier, is equipped with the Swedish AK5C, A Swedish custom made Belgian FN FNC, and the old AK4 is still the standard service rifle of the Home Guard units of the Swedish army. The closest counterpart of the Home Guard in the US would probably be the National Guard, but the Home Guard soldiers are probably used for a wider range of missions during peacetime - but they are still trained infantrymen and have regular training exercises.
A very sweet little submachine gun. Was my main weapon when doing my military service. Very robust construction, very reliable, easy to handle and virtually no recoil. Can be stripped down in about 2 seconds and put together in about the same time (military limit 4.5 seconds). Main intended use was for urban fighting at short distance, like clearing a building, with effective range from 0 to 50 meters, so not a precission weapon for longer distance and no ability to use a scope. One small fault in this video, your front grip is not supposed to be on the magazine but gripping around the gun body just infront of the magazine.
