  • Getting precise measurements should not be a scary thing, nor does it have to be expensive. Everyone can benefit from a set of Digital Calipers in their toolbox. We show you how to use a set of Digital Calipers and we also explain the difference between Vernier Calipers, Dial Caliper, and Digital Calipers. They're all really the same, but the difference is in the way they display the measurement.

When measuring a round or circle object use three sides of the caliper. The jaws and the slide bar on the edge of the circle. No guessing if you are at the widest part. Automatic. Also to measure the center distance between two holes, measure the inside diameter of the hole, zero the caliper while measuring the diameter, then measure from outside edge of hole to outside edge of hole. The diameter is automatically subtracted and you get the exact center to center measurement.

I am very interested in calipers and how to get accurate measurement of watch crystals. Experts recommend taking a few measurements to be sure. But if the arms of the caliper can only measure the diameter, then why aren't all the measurements exactly the same? (This question is because I am having difficulty with using the calipers.) Thanks!

I think a dial caliper is a tool you think you don’t really need but when you have one you saved your butt from a big mistake

I agree, these are handy. And unless your building a motor or work in a machine shop,....these will be more than adequate.

Agree, and these have worked fine for building motors as well. I'll talk about using these with bore guages as well, in another video. Thanks for watching.

How to measure a hole in inch. Like 1 3/4 inch or 2 1/2 inch using digital calipers?

Good primer on pressision gages Tim. Im an Aerospace and Automotive machinist and I use calipers for about 50% of my measuring needs on and off the job. They are a tool that should be on every workbench in my opinion. P. S. Thanks for reminding people to put it back in the case, that is one of my pet peeves.

I admire you guys. I grew up around two machine shops (friends of the family). I am always amazed at the equipment, the accuracy, and the attention to detail that you have. Thanks for the kind words and Thanks for watching.

Nice. I keep a Starrett 6" Dial Caliper with the foot attachment in my box always. Of course you gotta have 0-1" O.D. Mic and a quality set of feeler gauges, long & short. ;)

Right on! I'll be covering those and other tools in upcoming videos. Thanks for watching.

Where to measure the DRILL BITS using VERNIER CALIPER. Is it on the PLAIN portion or in the SPIRAL part?

Do you have a problem with the battery draining on the digital calipers? It seems that my battery always drains over time even if I turn the unit off. As a result I always have to remove the battery after each use which is a major pain.

Nope, I have this set and another 8" and they don't go dead. I feel like my 8" is well over a year old without replacement. Thanks for watching.

I need to measure to the thousandth of an inch. All videos I see show in mm. I have never seen anyone measure in inches using one of these with 3 places to the right of the decimal. Although I see that many popular Mititoyo calipers say that they measure to .0001 or better, there would have to be a way to change the display to show a triple digit readout. Can you do this with the 120 dollar Mititoyo? Somebody anybody please hit me back with an answer.
