Yes. More like this for us raw beginners. This type of simple project really helps me gain skills with my knife and ends up nice enough for me to take out of the shop and display in the house. Well done.

It’s always inspiring to watch the more complicated carvings.
The quick simple ones get you to pick up the knife though. Thank you.

My thoughts exactly! The minute I saw the thumbnail pic, I knew this one was for me! I’ve always struggled with carving the eyes, but these look “doable”. Actually have developed a nasty habit of carving welders with their shield down! No more eye problems! Ha!

"Anybody can do it" Easy, simple. Let me tell you.....Its extremely hard. I found your channel about a week ago, and I really enjoy what you are doing. Its so satisfying to look at. I had to order some knifes and wood for myself to try this out. I have tried some of your "easy and simple" carvings, but its no easy.....I can’t get anything to look like anything. When Im done, its just a messed up piece of wood. And this is from someone who can’t even draw a stick figure on at piece of paper, so I guess I already knew beforehand that I would mess this up. Oh well.....I guess I have to be fine with just watching you do all these amazing little figurines.

On the topic of hard basswood, sorry Doug but you brought it up 😅. I live in Australia and the supply of basswood is essentially non-existent; in my experience anyway. So i get all mine from Amazon US. I also have Prime so i get free shipping which helps.
Now since i started this carving hobby ( thanks Doug) I have bought many various US brands who claim their basswood is grown in the USA from Amazon. All are very different, some harder than others, but none of them I would call soft. Softer than pine? Sure. Even basswood from the same supplier can be different. Nearly all of it is kiln dried so it's going to be on the tougher side anyway when compared to air dried.
Now to complicate matters somewhat i have Arthritis in both hands. However, I still carve as often as I can..every weekend. You just need to find a way that works for you. Super sharp knives is the first place to start😁
I have three knives...a 1 1/2" OCCT go-to knife, a 1/2" OCCT for the fine details like eyes and mouths etc and a big ol' Morakniv 122 for hogging off stock. I find these work well for me, both to deal with some tougher basswood and to work with the RA...I just take smaller cuts and a bit longer to get a carving done. Which is fine, whats the rush? It is supposed to be a relaxing way to spend some time.
My point is, don't get discouraged if you feel the wood is tough. The wood is what it is; find a method that works for you and get carving 😎🇦🇺👍🏻

As per Wikipedia: For humans and most primates, the philtrum survives only as a vestigial medial depression between the nose and upper lip. The human philtrum, bordered by ridges, also is known as the infranasal depression, but has no apparent function.
