When you talk about popping and locking not being the same as hip hop, in a way you are right, but not all the way right. True, popping and Locking has their own culture, technique, and music, but the influence is the same. And it had a big influence on breakers as well. Remember, No one on the east coast knew they were around because it was a west coast thing. Soul Train introduced popping and locking to America. That's how b-boys saw it and learned it. In the early days Poppers and Lockers were considered b-boys as well cause you had to know how to do everything in a crew. Look at the old docs, you see kids from New York popping as they break. So it's not as simple as " popping and Locking is not the same as hip hop"... it is.

It was a movement where people in the Bronx back in the 70’s wanted to create their own sound and artistic expression when Disco music was mainstream in the flashy/extravagant part of New York. Pioneers of the hip hop era expressed through........you guessed it: 1.DJ-ing (creating new sound through music) 2. Graffiti (the streets are the canvas) 3. Emcee-ing (rapping) 4. Knowledge (for the youth) 5. Breaking! (Movement) Social dance, how I see it, is a term where people would dance together exchanging energy/vibes, dance by “call & response” to the music(DJ), and is in NO way a staged/choreographed setting. (E.g Clubs, house parties, block parties, social settings etc). The first HIP HOP dance party to come to existence was done by DJ Kool Herc and the first ever Emcee, Coke La Rock. It was at an apartment complex in the Bronx, and the party was held in like a big community room that was an amenity to its residents.(keyword: community room/house party, therefore Social Dance). DJs and Emcees has such an impact on this new sound of Hip Hop that the people who were there were all feeling the music and dancing in such a new way that it eventually formed into a style known as breaking(bboying/bgirling). Hip hop dance was known for its originality and the contributors of Hip Hop being original. Grandmaster flash, one of the first masters of turntable-ism, noticed that 70s disco music DJs at clubs would have to switch out their records for another record when the song was finished(that stops the music, thus people stopped dancing momentarily). He figured out that the only way to keep the crowd dancing NONSTOP was to have dual turntables with a mixer in between, play 2 of the same records on each dual turntables, and extend the breaks that those songs had by doing scratching(he used a crayon to indicate on the vinyl record when the break started and ended) I’ve only explained why Hip hop needs to have at least one of those 5 elements, ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY DJ-ING! Hip hop has a huge cultural significance and global impact through their form of social dancing, it is very different than other art/movement forms. But by definition of social dance, they achieve the same results. House dance is another social type of dance. They did it at the clubs/warehouses. There were DJs mixing up house music to keep the participants dancing and exchanging vibes. Occasionally they would have singers there too(analogy to Emcee) **just another example** Locking, another social dance with its own style. Usually has DJs for music. The only sense I can make out of this is that Hip Hop is a social dance, but social dance isn't limited to hip hop. I personally haven't had the honor YET of taking Buddha Stretch's hip hop classes, definitely hearing it from him would help me completely understand his reasoning(I would love to one day)! I have learned from Jade Soul himself multiple times in the Southern California region, Mr. Wiggles, Sho-Tyme(one of my FAVORITE dance teachers, he's a legend and OG when it comes to hip hop dance, check out his work) and other dancers(who are also teachers) that grew up from the culture. I've gotten my knowledge(still learning too!) about hip hop through the music that I listened to growing up, learning breaking/party rocking/new jack swing/litefeet dances(these styles fall under the umbrella of hip-hop dances), and few of my friends that are hardcore hip-hop enthusiasts. If you have Netflix, I highly recommend the Netflix Original series "Hip Hop Evolution." Personally, it's one of the few documentaries about hip hop that isn't boring to me (no offense to other production companies that made their own). I highly recommend watching it because it's fun and engaging, and makes you fall in love with hip hop over again! The series unfortunately doesn't cover the dancing aspect of hip hop, just the culture as a whole & music, but still very informational! P.S. They keep adding to it you will find different sets of people adding more and more to it saying theirs x amount; I originally was taught their was 4 excluding knowledge but now they say it’s 5 6 7 etc.
