Man, I looked through the GOTY nominations and i genuinely haven't heard of most of those games, SAP definitely belongs up there.
I will stan Psychonauts 2 and Inscryption in any category they're in, and honestly Deathloop really had phenominal sound design.

hi NL since it is thanksgiving I have a confession to make. sometimes when i am at social gatherings that i do not want to be at i put a northernlion video on my phone at low but audible volume and put my phone up to my ear as if someone has called me with an important message. i then pause the video as i put my phone down and say i have to leave

NL wondering why Super Auto Pets isn't nominated for the Game Awards; it's because there's a time cutoff several months before the awards. It'll be eligible for next year's awards. EDIT: from the game awards wiki "Games eligible for The Game Awards this year must be available for public consumption on or before November 19, 2021. Titles that are released after this date will be eligible for The Game Awards ceremony in 2022."
Forza came out LAST WEEK and still got nominations. This is just factually wrong.
Except Inscryption got nominated and came out after SAP
@@kevinxnelms According to their wiki the cutoff is November 19, so Forza Horizons 5 made it in since it was released November 5th. As for Super Auto Pets, I guess the games publications who nominate these just don't know about it yet. Not even Giantbomb has mentioned it in their podcasts yet.
@@Silas_MN Yeah, I updated my original comment with the exact cutoff date which is November 19, so SAP qualifies. It seems to have flown below the radar of most games publications, even ones I know would like auto battlers. My guess is that it just hasn't hit a critical mass yet because only a few streamers are playing it.
Buying a pet gives the dog a random +1, buying a pear gives him +2/+2 for THE SAME PRICE.
Yet you skipped over multiple pears in order to buy pets to buff the dog which you immediately sold. You should change that habit if you want to make your dog work more consistently. Even Apples are more gold efficient than a level 1 dog buff.
I mean, they nominated It Takes Two for game of the year, which i felt had both an original story and fun mechanics. Good video tho Egg Daddy

My biggest issue with SAP is how little replay value and opportunity for weird lineups it has. winning with meta builds (early dog, dodo rooster, turkey tiger fly) is incredibly easy and winning with anything bad or a meme is practically impossible. I have played a decent amount, and have gotten to the point at which i have no desire to play the same thing over and over again.
Just run sniper build, most op fun win i’ve ever gotten. Doesn’t work too often but it certainly can.

I think if they keep expanding the roster it has the potential to be a really popular and great game, but you're right there's just not enough build variety.
you can't run turkey, tiger, fly. there's not enough room on the roster for them all to fit effectively.

The entire rant is just proof that awards are useless. Everyone has a different opinion on this.. I like the SAP content but haven't played for a minute myself, even though it's free. Other games I have a hundred hours in, but I never watched someone else play. (he read my comment out loud on twitch saying: 'decent fun but not goty'.) All these awards are just marketing scams.

Worse than that, many of the picks at the The Game Awards are there for advertising. The Last of Us 2 won numerous awards last year, beating out Ghost of Tsushima (except in the viewer's choice award, notably; and that actually chafed a lot of critics). This year, Battlefield 2042 was nominated despite the massive number of glitches and terrible reception.

Games like Isaac or Slay the Spire are mechanics driven, but they have so much variation on the core mechanics with extra difficulties, extra characters, extra modes, etc. SAP is great for what it is, and there's no better price than free, but it's just too simple to really be in contention for anything imo. Clearly it's struck a chord with some people, and that's awesome, all respect to the devs, but it's a game with no story, limited graphics, limited soundtrack, and not a great deal of depth. It's great for what it is, but it's silly to argue that it's being overlooked as some kind of classic. NL is just contrarian.
Honestly, the fact that he's pissed that people don't respect mechanics-driven games, when he doesn't respect story-driven games is peak irony.
I agree that SAP is a brilliant game, but as you say it doesn't do nearly enough to be a GOTY contender.

@@samuellawson1425 I understand that story-driven games aren't his personal taste and also don't necessarily line up with his type of content. It's way easier to banter and engage with chat and run the casino when playing something like SAP than it would be playing something like Nier Automata or DIsco Elysium, and he's gotta make the content that works for him, especially because the majority of the content is taken from the VODs now. That's fine, and I get it. I prefer games with a hefty amount of story, but I also got into this channel through Baba Is You and Isaac, so clearly something's working.
I agree though that the consistent jabs at any level of story in games is just like, a played-out caricature at this point. NL really seems to take it that any story is cringe and a distraction from the real point of the game. Even with Inscryption, it felt like his attitude was "this story is stupid and a waste of time, just give me the mantis god and urayuli."

I play indie for the mechanics. AAA games were/are often so watered down and uninteresting mechanically, because risk. I don't play games for eye candy.
Super Auto Pets is a diamond despite it's simplicity. It has no barriers to entry, not financially, visually or by complexity. It has a great PvP system for mobile users as it doesn't require a steady connection, you never have to wait for an opponents turn, and it's something like a asynchronous endless tournament which means you can pause and come back whenever you want to complete your "run". It has great replayability.
It could even be a great title for young gamers.

I voted SAP for GOTY on steam because I enjoy playing the game and watching these videos, but honestly I don't think I bought a new game this year. I find myself just playing games I already have and not really caring for new releases anymore

I was once trapped in the forest. I was on a hiking trip in Alaska when I got separated from the group. I was lost, wandering for hours. It was getting dark and I could tell it was going to be a cold night. I then saw a massive creature approach and almost beckon me forward. I was able to hold onto the side of it and it seemed to drag me. It pulled me for what must have been a couple miles. It stopped and I found myself on the main trail. I looked up and saw that it was a noble bison that had rescued me. I was quickly found by the rescue search and the bison just walked away. Now that is, a more clutch bison

If you count the prime games and the remakes separately then we are technically at Metroid 12.
SAP isn't doing anything groundbreaking but I think it's simplistic approach to the autobattler genre is worthy of praise. Also, while its mechanics are simple, it is quite deep in terms of strategy. Just look at how the meta evolved since NL first started playing it. I definitely think it should get more recognition.

The "groundbreaking" argument is the excuse from the argument. People don't usually look for innovativity, almost never. Most good games are either hits within an established genre or sequels/remakes. There are exceptions of course, the weirdos, like "Papers, Please" or "Death Stranding" come to mind.
