  • The late, great Richard Whiteley of Countdown fame was covered in nice yellow gunge in the first series of House Party after a public vote.

Love Richard Whiteley trying to put his glasses back on and them being completely covered in gunge.

Something I never understood about gunge tank was why so many men went into the tank to be gunged dressed as smartly as Richard was.
Can honestly say I am a good sport myself, but I draw the line there!!

Stanley Irvine no I can't work that out either!!
I would get gunged in a tank like this (given the chance) but not smartly dressed at all

I doubt it was their suit.

Noel was often impeccably dressed as well (he was one of the only people I know of that could pull off the shirts. Shame he stopped wearing them from around season 5) but I imagine, unbelievably, money probably played a part. Look at the suit Noel was wearing at the end of season 1. Miles too big for him, but that is how suits were worn back then. I have no doubts that being gunged in that suit, whoever the designer was, got kudos and extra sales for advertising it. I only say this as I think of Jerry Springer. I am glad I grew up in Springer's kind of innocent era (1994-2000), I am only just finding out now as U.K. Living would cut out all the American advertising in the show, that the suits Jerry wore were not brought for him but loaned to him by C.K, GAP and so on. I can't think Noel was any different and you have to remember, Jerry was king of his slot both here and in the States knocking Oprah off her perch (I still love that) It's hard to believe now but just 30 years ago, a blink of an eye in universal terms, this gunging was being watched by me and 17.99 million others. With 18 million viewers, why wouldn't Calvin want his suit gunged? The only designer I ever recall being up for it themselves though was Vidal Sassoon as he did Noel's hair for years. He's had the same hairstyle since 1981. He was one of the only people I also remember as a kid that if his hair got wet or gunged, he looked like a completely different man. Anyway, I digressed. Stay 7 years ago. I am a man (I can still say that) from 7 years in the future and it is very f&£(ing bleak.

I think more women should have been gunged even Rachel Riley or Suzie. Bring the show back especially with the gunge tank
