I remember coming home from school to see sooty and sweep what a lovely show it was.......I really enjoyed this footage...harry seemed like a lovely gent......happy day's!
I had my own sooty & sweep puppets & i was the first cub "scout" to win the entertainers badge * years old < i really didn't fancy knots & first aid, so I was supposed to do 10 minutes & I ended up doing it for the last 60 years. I make all my own characters & I still haven't decided what to do when I grow up.
this is wonderful, as well as quite sad. Harry gave up Sooty to his son Matthew the following year; and a result, Matthew only accepted the role on the proviso that Harry never perform with Sooty again.
Sweep still kills me, and you can hear the studio laughing when he makes an appearance. I'd love to know how Harry Corbett came up with sweep, how he found him etc and the voice.
KittyBox meows 100% spot on. He seems like hes going out of his way to be insulting about Harrys job. "Oh come on!.. I mean lets be serious here" - "Don't you get sick of it" - "It's been 25 years you've had your hand up that".. All his questions seemed to be attempting to poke Harry in some way to maybe losing his cool. We all know it's a puppet and we all know its Harry/Matthew moving it but theres somethings you just shouldn't ask or if you do put it with some tact and grace. It's like saying to a wrestler "It's all fake! Why do you do it?" or to Roger Moore "Well, you're not James bond! You're not seen as the best James Bond by many so how do you cope with that?" I must admit I was a HUGE fan of Matthew Corbetts Sooty era and this is pretty much the first time I've seen Harry and must say I can see where Matthew got his talent from. Both come across as loving, warm and friendly.
I know this is an old post but from what I've observed Harry is far more "real". He did grow to genuinely care for Sooty. Matthew by comparison was/is extremely talented but he's more about the business said of things. Getting the numbers up. Filling seats. He has also been stated to have a rather dry sense of humour and I have observed that a little myself. He can sound almost harsh himself but it's obvious it's not meant that way.
Why does Sweep always seem to sometimes when he’s not being spoke to or before he asks Matthew, Harry or Richard something, he’d break the fourth wall and wave and say hello to the camera or audience or whatever?
I'm just old enough to remember Harry with Sooty. Matthew was taking over when I watched. Love Sooty so much. Sweep especially.

Wonderful, I'm a fan of the Matthew and Sooty era but seeing where it all began is really interesting thanks for posting this :)
I just KNEW Sweep would spray Richard Whitely with water! His trademark cheekiness!

Harry Corbett's a legend
God I love Harrys voice!! Just bloody MAGIC!!!! Give over sweep!XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
60 + year's and still no competition. Harry is still king.

Crikey! I'm old enough to remember when Harry was the presenter...

His son was also amazing.

Yea, he’s an arsehole.

Whitely is so ignorant and rude in this, his whole demeanour is condescending and patronising. Harry remains a complete gent though.
A few years of Countdown calmed that down.
Why did he let Whitley operate the sooty? Exposing the method. That would never happen today. It completely blows the character.
Was it Sooty or Sweep who water pistled Richard Whiteley would like to know please
It was Sweep who started it
Sooty sent his mate Freddie the Ferret to get his teeth into RW for being so rude. th-cam.com/video/G9xHEj3Gk4Q/w-d-xo.html
0:12 Sooty looks a bit worse for wear here,,,
Why was that?
