  • On 16th December 2022, a landslide struck a campsite in Batang Kali, a popular hilly area in the Malaysian state of Selangor.
A total of 31 people perished in the deadly mud, including 13 children. Authorities said a slope as high as a 30-storey building collapsed onto the campsite. It was Malaysia’s worst landslide in nearly three decades. The tragedy brought back memories of the 1993 Highland Towers incident that killed 48 people after a huge mudslide brought on by heavy rain triggered the collapse of the 12-storey building on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur. What went wrong? Are landslides in Malaysia natural disasters or man-made tragedies?
CNA correspondent Afifah Ariffin speaks with survivors and rescue workers involved in the Batang Kali landslide to reconstruct the events of that fateful night.

when the husband recognized her wife through her side view because she has been sleeping by his side for the past 21 years, I broke down and I cant calm myself down until the end of the video. This incident is really heartbreaking, I remember refreshing the timeline every minutes just so I could get an update about any survivors but those last days were only filled with upsetting news. 😢
Rest in peace to those who lost their life and I hope Malaysian government could do something with the grieving families, rescuers etc.

most of victims are Chinese, and very young in production ages, the chinese population drop fast, in 2023 chinese just 21%, from 23 in 2010, in 1990 chinese population about 27%, in 1950 with combine of singapore chinese about almost 50%.in 2050 chinese population about 18%, and maybe Rohginya-Bengali/Bangladeshi will made 2nd largest and chinese down to 3rd, . So singapore be kick out, and chinese in malaysia have few children 1-2, most malay and Austronesian/bumiputra have 4 to 10 children, in average about 5. Most i asked why? it's more connect to history and what happen to them, for example Singapore, Southern Thailand(north malay peninsular and Champa Kingdom lost, malay lost their land. some history...
Malay fear losing like Champa Malay in Vietnam, they just lost half peninsular in north to Thai, since fall of Sriwijaya, and Thai made Northern Malay state Kingdom, like Tambralingga/Ligor or today Nakhon Si Thammarat, as vassal in Kedah-Siam war and Singgora(today Songkhla), Patani conquest by Thai, even today Surat Thani city pillar shrine base on 'srivijayan style architecture" included nakhon si thammarat city pillar shrine, and also Chedi Laem Sor Pagoda in Srivijaya art Ko Samui, Surat Thani, they're 2 old malay buddhist temple still used by Thai, Wat Phra Boromathat Chaiya Surat Thani, Ancient Srivijayan buddhist temple and Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan Nakhon Si Thamarat,
built by Kingdom of Tambralingga Malay: Ligor or Negara Seri Dhamaraja, Thai: Nakhon Si Thammarat). Malay King Chandrabhanu Sridhamaraja 1230-1262AD. Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan are very similar to Borobodur style and others sumatra and java stupa, like "Vihara Dhamma Sundara Solo Central Java Stupa"

@@janela3725 They know it's dangerous because it's rainy season, but they did it anyway because it's also a long school holiday. Malaysia should revised their long school holidays to the middle of the year instead of the end of the year when it's raining season.

Should consult a Geotechnical Engineer instead of a Geologist.
Dr Nor Shahidah’s theory about how the slope failed does not match the description of the failure at the beginning of the documentary.
The landslide is a tragedy but interviewing wrong parties will create misunderstanding and misinformation about what needs to be done to prevent this from happening again.

If you go down Genting down the slope, there's a bridged section that you can see is something like 7 storeys high on the side of a concreted hillside. In 2005, a landslide also killed people and they built this over the landslide section.
If you want to go up mountain, this is expected of a risk to take. Even you go Switzerland don't have avalanche also got snow avalanche.
Teach y'all something, he leg trap all, want camp near hill also hide far far away, at least is your leg trap.

I am curious if such landslides are common in Malaysia or more specifically in that area. How many times have these landslides occur? If this happened before, didn't they learn anything? Isn't it strange to say that this is the first or very very rare occasion it occur and it happens right at the time and place where a hundred over people are camping? The report did mention that there were land clearing activities at the campsite. That could be the main contributory cause. Even so, it seems like these sort of holiday camping activity in Malaysia is like a cowboy town, no rules or regulations. The politician claim that the campsite is unlicenced. That may be so, but what sort of licence should they get and if the licence approval involves the authorities actually going down to check the suitability and safety of the camp location. Because only now it seems their authorities are drawing up guidelines. You mean no guidelines exist before this? When it comes to life and limb of human beings, it should be more than guidelines. It should be law. I suggest people stay away from camping in Malaysia until enforcement becomes stronger.

@Mfkrtoblank are u brain dead? Did I say it's government's fault for causing natural disasters?? Then is it the camp owners fault for causing the natural disaster??? It is the government's job to REGULATE and ENFORCE for natural disasters. If earthquakes happen in Japan for earthquakes, what kind of stupid government would be blind not regulate for building construction standards for earthquakes. If the landslides happen in Malaysia on hillslopes then WTF do you allow them to have campsites then?? What are your standards?? Distance and height and soil volume, rainfall volume?? Your stupid government not aware how much rain falls during the year or the month?? Is it first time you see rain in Malaysia?? Are you some braindead malusian government official??? And YES, it is government's fault if they don't regulate for traffic accidents if they don't have regulations for speed limit, safety belt, brakes, engine worthiness, traffic lines, driving licence etc etc

Yup,. no guidelines. It's pretty common for Malaysian to camp everywhere or trekking and hiking everywhere without any permits from authority. I had been in a similar dangerous situation when I was doing a jungle trekking along a river to get to a popular local waterfall, and suddenly it was raining heavily where the river just swelled up and the track had just gone. We calmly stopped by the riverside and ate our lunch while everyone was holding a large tarp that was supposed to be our mat. Some guy tried to return back to the jungle entrance but they couldn't even pass through as the river had completely submerged the whole river banks. So we proceeded to the waterfall after the rain stopped. Then a group of Forest Rangers with dogs found us at the waterfall, because they were informed that a group still stuck inside the river area, which was our group.
Another time was hiking a mountain and suddenly it rained so hard that the trek down simply became small waterfalls. There was 3 groups up that mountain including a group of school children, so it's like 60+ people up there, and the school kids and the teacher really had it bad. Some fell and sprained their legs, so my group had to take turns to carry the kids down before the emergency service reached the mountain. Fortunately for my cases, there's no death involved.
