  • COVID-19 has left many countries including Malaysia economically shaken. Unemployment has hit its highest levels in a decade. The economy is expected to contract between minus 3.5% and 5.5% this year. The impact is now being felt across all layers of society, especially the poor and the most vulnerable segment of the society. All of a sudden they've found themselves stripped of their economic livelihood and have now fallen into the poverty trap. The coronavirus crisis has driven up poverty levels in the country for the first time since the 1998 Asian Financial crisis. What has the government done to cushion the impact of the crisis? Can the new poor in Malaysia cope and survive the challenges in the new post-pandemic era?

i love how you've included the different people in the interview. What I learnt in the end, Malaysians are helping each other out without putting blame on just one party, instead of playing the blame game (which we can go down that rabbit hole) - action speaks louder than words. What may seem like just a packet of milk to a family or a meal/day to the homeless might not seem to be enough or solve the problem, at least we're doing something rather than nothing. We can do this together. Malaysia Boleh.

2:25 The way CNA showing and potrayed Malaysia is like some apocalyptic -disaster land ,Mad Max style. Bukit Beruntung was in dilapidated and ruined way before 98 economic crisis and covid10. It was a bad planning coming from greedy developer who built the township in the early 90's based on speculations that gov will build KLIA in that area. Same goes to other township nearby like Lembah Beringin and Tanjung Malim.. the families that bought their house in that area was being cheated by the developer and they have to borne the consequences for the rest of the life. One of the reason why there are poverty in Malaysia is because greedy capitalist and tycoon who manipulated the pricing for everything, including the housing. btw, do you know that many housing developers in Malaysia only want to cater foreign buyers from China and Singapore and make the house price went skyrocketing in Malaysia? maybe you also can cover that story, CNA and also many Malaysian cannot get jobs because these greedy and selfish tycoon only want to hire cheap foreign labours from Bangladesh and nepal, which can work like slaves without SOCSO and EPF ? maybe you can cover that also ,CNA..

Very Inaccurate. The so called " poor people" who live in poverty in Sandakan as shown was mostly illegal immigrants.
Do u know how many illegal philipinos are there in Sandakan?? A LOT.
And those shown in KL are those people who chooses to live on the street by choice and some of them are drug addict or abandoned by their famillies. This is social problem not poverty.
The headline is SO MISLEADING, it should be about effect of the pandemic and not about poverty in Malaysia. Yes we have poverty in Malaysia, but not as bad as depicted.
Very misleading and was done in the intention of slandering.

As I continued to watch the video I was struck by the positive outlook that this family put on the whole COVID crisis. They did what they needed to and it allowed them a new sense of calmness in their life now that they weren't living it just to earn money! I have been living like this for years, and the joy that it gives you not having to worry about paying cable bills and having a brand name for everything has been amazing! Although I have to admit that people around me think I'm lying about how I live that there is no way I can be happy without always having money to go out to eat or shop, they can't comprehend the fact that I've found my happiness within myself, my faith and doing things for other people. I had the cars the new furniture the credit cards and along with all those came constant worry about what if I got sick and couldn't work, you get the idea. In Asian countries things are so different they seem to care about each other and want to help collectively rather than how we are in America!

All third world and also developing countries facing the issue where non-educated person are having more child than the educated one. It is easily found a household with 4 kids at least in poor family while the richer family only have 2 kids. How can the income of USD 500 can raise 4 childs, most of the time children force to quit study early to find income. In current society there are not much high income job for low educated person. It is cruel but it is also the fact we can't deny with.

Price of fuel here (ron 95 ) is $1.3 a litre, Malaysia is almost rm2 a litre. 1 litre of milk is $1.2 , msia is rm7 . The same honda jazz here cost $20k where else in msia is well over rm75k. Theres minimum wage here, even hard labor pays you alot, not even accounting penalty rates too. You work in McDonald’s here you can earn a decent $23-26 an hour, in Malaysia , rm6-7 an hour if you’re lucky? So tell me , earning rm7 can only get me 1 litre of milk while $24 can get me almost 20 litres of milk, and you can do other calculations ive mentioned above and please , tell me, are you still saying Malaysia is cheaper than Australia? This is my life experience as Ive lived in both Malaysia for 31 years and then Australia for 5 years. I was struggling to make ends meet with 3 jobs in kl back then, that was during najibs time. Then I decided to migrate to Australia, and TRUST me, believe me, it’s easier to go by here then in Malaysia any-day, anytime.. i was there and i know how it feels to wait for my monthly paycheck. Which is why i said ‘my heart goes to all Malaysians that are struggling’ in my initial comment

This country has soo many problem to begin with. Unemployment, corruption, poverty, racism, some people lacks education thus can't get better jobs, illegal immigrants, the government sector favouring one race, the private sector favouring specific races, the young generation busy rem rem their bikes at night, politics 24/7. Like come on, I love this country and proud of being Malaysian. If the neighbouring country (not going to mention it) catched up to us, my honor of being a Malaysian probably going to shattered into million pieces.

I am still a teenager but judging by how my peers behave I’m convinced I’m moving out, they literally have no sense of morality anymore yet are still devout muslims but drink, get high, gamble and swear literally half the time but the people here still have the mentality that a sinful muslim is better than a decent atheist (or agnostic) UGHHH and so many people want to be rappers, vloggers, influencers yet still expect the government to provide funds for them, I still believe in god just not the one in any of the major religions but I certainly don’t believe in this nation anymore, it’s too far gone...... and even in this pandemic we have ministers fighting for seats in office (yet still hold huge parties during MCO) and the people here have this “saviour” attitude where they desperately want to help the immigrants so much, we literally have so many illegal immigrants yet people sympathise for them
