Speed Painting Sci-Fi Infantry! The Solaryn Dragoons Kickstarter Sample [How I Paint Things]

  • The Solaryn Dragoons are a range of 3D-printable sci-fi soldiers scaled to fit with most popular tabletop wargames. The best thing is, being STLs, you can scale them in your slicer to make them larger or smaller as necessary! They've got a really crisp, refined style that I think looks great, and as with previous Quartermaster3D offerings they come pre-supported and print extremely easily.
    This sample piece was printed at 30 microns (or 0.03mm layer height) on an Elegoo Mars 2 Pro, with each regular exposure layer at 2.2 seconds and a careful lift speed of just 30mm/min. I'm really impressed by the print, and the supports all simply pulled away with just a little warm water. Clean-up was minimal, and took just a few seconds with a small emery board. Certainly much faster than shaving mould lines off a plastic kit!
    Check out the Kickstarter page here and grab the sample soldier if you'd like to print your own to see how they look in person: www.kickstarter.com/projects/...

    Paint the Sword and Pistol Sergeant Variant Blue and you have the perfect example of what a Harkonnen Solider from Dune should look like! These are awesome!

      Good shout. :D These guys are pretty deliberately as generic as possible, so while they're scaled to fit with 40k (makes the most sense for 3D printing guys, most of the time) they can work with just about any sci-fi setting you could paint them to match.

    I recently used this scheme for my Ironhead Prospector gang and I have to say it worked a treat(I did add some gold as my 'yellow' spot colour mind :P)! They look great, so thanks so much for generously sharing these fantastic schemes that simplify and make painting such a pleasure.

    My goodness this is perfect, I was given a bunch of Infinity models to paint and I was told to paint them in a very modern color scheme using greens, browns and greys, and this...helps so much to visualize.
    Thank you for the inspiration now I'm eager to try out the easiness of this for a small army.

      Go ahead, and please do! I'd really like to see this one take off. I went all-in on the previous Kickstarter and the moment this one went live, I jumped on to do the same. I'd love to pick the brains of whoever painted your samples on the Kickstarter page, but I think I got pretty close with a minimum of fuss. :D

      Cheers! What's bugging is me what colour you actually did paint the armour. I can't quite spot it from any of the ranges I've got, and it's going to drive me nuts if I don't know the 'right' colour.

      @@SonicSledgehammerStudio for sure! The armor is a 3 color layer (using airbrush) base is Vallejo air Gray Blue, followed by Vallejo air intermediate blue, then a very light zenithal airbrush of Vallejo air pale blue. Then I gave it a light drybrush with Vallejo model Color pale blue (oddly, it’s a very different color from the air version pale blue)…. Then followed up with nuln oil watered down and mixed with some army painter quick shade mixing medium.

    It's a very beautiful mini, effectively has a retro sci-fi look, the jacket is perhaps too long, but the overall is good, for the visor I normally use a base of silver, followed by Vallejio transparent colors (red/blue or green)

    Great video sir and fantastic sculpts. I have a question which may be directed towards you and the community here. Do you or anyone know of 3D printing services for strictly printing 3D minis? I have had a rough time finding small companies that will communicate well with me, as well as finding a fair price. Normally I would look into printing for myself, however I considered the cost to get into it, and the hobby that is 3d printing it's self and found that I have more than enough on my plate. I have STL files ready as well as pre-supported, but no company. Thank you again, and I look forward to future videos.

    Looks great! This may seem like a little thing, but I'm curious what your recipe is for basing your minis. What is the texture? Sand? Baking soda? Texture paste?

    • @zackcook5123
      @zackcook5123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Might not be what you're looking for bit cheap solid paste can be made by mixing varying amounts of wall filler, PVA, paint and sand

      This one's just Stirland Mud, drybrushed heavily with Ryza Rust and then a little Eldar Flesh. Tufts to taste, and boom!

  • @huwtindall7096
    @huwtindall7096 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Stormvermin Fur looks like a great option for WW2 german "grey" uniforms. So much variation in the original colour across the course of the war and then the weathering of the colours in combat over time why not use a citadel colour.
    Also, given how many seemingly one off minis you paint from a bewildering array of mini ranges your shelf must be eclectic to say the least. That'd be a good video for a change too. Show us what's in the cabinet/on the shelf.

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trouble is also the fact that I've been painting up far more recently than I've been able to in the past, so my shelves are a little more than just eclectic, they're absolutely stuffed. 😅 What I need is a bigger house to carry on with all this, obviously!

    Could you please recommend some alternative to Terminatus Stone dry paint? Maybe, Tyrant Skull?

    • @SonicSledgehammerStudio
      @SonicSledgehammerStudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      There isn't really a straight identical alternative. Tyrant Skull is darker and more yellow; you might try Brainmatter Beige from Army Painter for the most similar colour I can think of, or Vallejo Ivory?

    • @natediaz7009
      @natediaz7009 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SonicSledgehammerStudio thank you for the answer. Unfortunately, I'm not able to get Army painter / Vallejo paints in the short period, so I'll try to find some similar from GW set... If Tyrant Skull is darker/yellow, what do you think about Pallid Wych Flesh, or Corax White? 😕
