Head to head is interesting. 14-13 Edberg yes. But Edberg trails Becker clearly and Lendl is up on Becker. It all ends up what they have won, and Lendl won so much more than Edberg and Becker. Lendl 94 titles, 8 grand slams, number one for 270 weeks. Edberg 41 titles, 6 grand slams, number one for 72 weeks. Two great players no matter what. Legends!

@@drumtum Edberg was less likely to get to the final rounds on a slower surface (clay) so he met Lendl more often on fast courts that favored his game.

I miss those days - Lendl, Becker, Edberg, Stich - the guys who possessed single backhand line drive passing shots.
Anyway, I always enjoyed those Swedish crowd chanting "Edberg, Edberg, Clap, Clap, Clap". I was in the stadium for this match and that chanting was a beauty.

His fanclub was not sporting at all. They shouted and disturbed during points. It is not sporting to applaud on double faults either. They got what they deserved here. Swedish drunks.

This match left Lendl totally exhausted. Otherwise it could have been a much tougher and closer match with Becker in the final. While everyone is quick to point out the age difference between Connors and Lendl, one tends to forget that Becker was 8 years younger than Lendl while Edberg was 6 years younger. That made a huge difference especially 1988 onwards. Still Lendl was clearly the best player of his generation.

If Edberg had a more powerful forehand, he could have been the best!!! Still a legend though!

Edberg WAS the best in 90 and 91, year end number 1 ATP Player but he SHOULD have won more Slams, also THIS match

If I had Federer's shots I'd be best.

He was no. 1, but that was not his point. Edberg indeed had a mediocre forehand (relative to other no.1s), which says a lot about his other strokes - given they had to compensate that.

Edberg having a (relatively) weak forehand is totally irrelevant to his game since he was a net rusher and a pure S&V. He simply didn't rely on powerful groundstrokes.
It's like saying Djokovic has weak volleys: it's irrelevant since he never uses them.

Under extreme pressure, that weak Edberg forehand suddenly became the best forehand in the world. The mark of a great champion: your weakest shot becomes rock solid when it counts.
