    It is so hard to find good footage of Roscoe's serve. Thanks so much for posting!

    I’m glad he’s doing better these days as I know he struggled for a while. Doesn’t matter if you fall down. It’s about getting back up every time

    In '71 I was ranked 113th in college tennis. I played Tanner in the round of sixteen in Vegas. I lost "6,1 6, 1" (It was windy!). At that time he had the fastest serve in tennis. He later lost to Conners in the semi's.

      Based on this video of his toss, clearly the wind did not affect Roscoe' serve that day or any other day 😂

    One of the best servers of his time. His statement of having the toss the same every time is something many try, but few can master. That is the reason Sampras was such a great server, because his coach insisted he learn how to hit flat, slice, and kick, all from the same toss.

    Thanks for posting Roscoe Tanner’s serve and clear instructions. I always wanted to know more about his game as I was born 10/15/1951, same as Roscoe. I’d love to see him play squash, my favourite sport.

    Funny watching the way players like Tanner and Becker finished with the back leg forward.
    Opposite to modern tennis

    • @billthestinker
      @billthestinker 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      indeed it is, easier serve and volley just keep moving forward

    It’s fascinating to see that he could not care less about keeping his tossing arm up. Such a natural looking motion which he makes look easy. I’m guessing that is due in part to an extremely high coordination level.

    • @CahalanTennis
      @CahalanTennis 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Dang. You’re right. He brings his tossing arm down horizontal. I have to point arm and fingers to the sky, until the last instant, for my best serves. Pointing the fingers skyward would work for most of us. That’s me chuckling in the background 😅

    • @CahalanTennis
      @CahalanTennis 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I or others curl the fingers rather than pointing up, one tends to curl the arm - and serving into the net or push. Focus on keeping the fingers straight and pointed up, and your arm will stay straight too! In that order

      Yes, there’s a reason serves are in my feed. I’ve been working pretty hard on it. Fortunately, it’s fun …usually, at least. I could not even count how many thousands I have hit. It seems finally to be getting better.

      Off my chest: I’ve decided that Tanner’s tossing action probably is only doable because he is okay with an extremely low toss. I don’t think he could be so cavalier about his action if he desired the toss height that most players have.

    finish with the back leg forward I like this

    • @swalterstennis
      @swalterstennis 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      No. Don’t do that. That’s 1960’s style. By 1980 most players were changing to a front foot land. By 1990, only Sabatini and Becker and a few others were doing it. Agassi and Chang both changed to front foot land when they were first or second year pros. Keeping the back leg back gets 10-20 more mph. I coached 50,00 hours and at US Open and will state that this tip is 100% modern serve. But, yes, Roscoe does make it look great.

    "Wow, amazing." Those were the words that came into my head when I first clicked on this video and saw the words "Courtside Tennis club, Los Gatos."
    Before I clicked on this video and the reason why I clicked on it was just because I have a memory of the time when (in the 70's) I was at a company barbecue at Courtside and he was hired by the company to play tennis with the people at the barbecue. I could have played tennis with him and a few people were urging me to do that but.... I was too chicken.
    I didn't want to go out there on the tennis court and look like an amateur idiot with the people of the company watching. This was back in the days when he was an actual pro tennis player playing in the big tournaments like the U.S. Open etc etc.

      Glad you enjoyed the Tanner serve video. There had not been any good instructive videos of his serve, until I restored from 1991 8mm video, not even Hi8! I was amazed the narrow tape still had enough magnetism to play back modestly. Even disk drives lose their magnetism over time. My other claim to fame is being the Inventor of the Extended Two Hand Backhand E2HBH, a more powerful and fluid two hander with longer hitting zone - much like a classic forehand. Google it!

    When serve and volley was a thing, you let your serve pull you into the court. Not no mo'.

    Un mouvement très proche de celui d'Henri Leconte, basé sur une rapide vitesse de bras. Difficilement copiable.
