You went through all the emotions that were intended as he painted the story he wanted to tell. A perfect example of someone really listening to it with their heart.
I think the exact same thing. This is one of the few perfect songs in every way. He was a master songwriter and one of the greatest story teller singers I have ever heard.
You explained yourself beautifully! You also have a good singing voice when you trust yourself. Your face told your reaction even if you had said nothing!
Great song. It's so good because Gordon was writing this during a time when he was having relationship issues. Very close to him bearing his soul. It worked.
I got some sad news for these people watching this video golden life passed away he was 84 years old on May 1st he will be missed but his music will live on forever 😀😁
This is my favorite song of all time and Gordon Lightfoot is my favorite singer. No other singer is as emotionally invested in their music as he is. Throw in his gorgeous voice and the poetic words and you have a masterpiece.
Fist off you have a beautiful voice. Watching your emotional reaction to this song i can only think you take the similar journey I do every time I hear it. He paints a beautiful picture with his voice, words and phrasing.
@@brianmcmillan7426 not a great song though. Bitter Green, Cotton Jenny, Canadian RR Trilogy... Did She Mention My Name, just saying... MANY great songs... but not everything he wrote/sang was great.
If Gordon Lightfoot did nothing else on Earth besides write & record this song, his life would have touched millions of people. I know most people think of this as it was written,- a song to a lost love. But for me, it's a song to myself of not understanding how my life fell apart & why I can't put it back together, esp. the line, "But heroes often fail. And you won't read that book again because the ending's just too hard to take."
I spent years living in the Philippines and I know that for Filipinos "love songs" is literally a genre of music. This is the exact opposite, it is a tragedy. It is the story of a love that began with such promise but now it has died and the feelings are gone. He wrote it while he was going through a divorce and it was when I was going through mine that I realized he had penned the most perfect enunciation of the loneliest, saddest feeling in the whole world. A feeling like grief from a death but the person is still alive and it is the love between you that has passed away...
Some say Gordon is "Canada's greatest poet." :-O He sings very beautiful 'stories". I was lucky enough to have seen him in concert about 20 years ago. The audience begged and begged for it until he played "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" as an encore.... We all left the showhall with tears on our faces afterward! :-O
Was and is a great emotional and descriptive song. It was very unique and special and continues unchanged throughout the decades as time marches on. A classic for sure.
You really can't go bad with any Gordon Lightfoot song. Three more I think you'll love are "Beautiful", "Softly", and "Shadows". You'll be doing yourself a favor if you listen to them.
As PikaPresSMC1 has suggested, you should react to "Sundown" and "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot. Do "Sundown" first. I wouldn't call it upbeat, but it's definitely not a downer. "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" though is the sad and true story of the sinking of the cargo ship "Edmund Fitzgerald" on Lake Superior in the winter of 1975. Just so you know, Lake Superior is a huge inland freshwater sea of about 82,000 square kilometers on the border between Canada and the United States. It is the largest of the five Great Lakes of North America.
when Gordon was composing this song he said ''I didn't think it was a great song'' but it became his signature tune..Great melody by a master wordsmith..
"Early Morning Rain" is another of his very emotional and heartfelt songs. He really makes you feel it. But I should also mention that Peter, Paul and Mary did a splendid cover of it as well.
Gordon Lightfoot is the epitome of a Balladeer and this song is a perfect example of a Ballad 1) A poem or song narrating a story in short stanzas. 2) A slow sentimental or romantic song.
I've got a 45 record of the Stars On 54 version. I would have never guessed back in the day that a good disco song could be made from a Lightfoot classic. Shows the genius of all involved!
Hello, dear Aarlehn. Kamusta, kaibigan? What a lovely song to react to! Gordon Lightfoot is considered to be the greatest living Canadian songwriter. He has a wonderful ability to craft exactly words to bring you right into the song. It's almost impossible to not become a part of the story he tells. The emotion you feel is because of his writing and for his perfect delivery and phrasing. If you like this one, he has dozens more that are just as good. I love your singing, too. You remind me very much of my time in Bacolod when a Filipina would just start singing, anytime, anywhere, and without music. It never mattered if they had a good voice or not. It was their hearts singing. It was wonderful! ♥ Ingatan at manatiling ligtas, aking kaibigan. Magkita tayo sa susunod. ☺☺
@@LhenJhenTV I can honestly say that I enjoyed hearing them all. But there were no karaoke machines when I heard them. But, for these Pinay, it was just wonderful to hear the songs coming from their hearts ♥
@@LhenJhenTV Your voice is just fine, my friend. You sing from your heart because you feel the music. That's all that matters. I'm always happy to hear you. ☺♥

I think Gordon's best is Canadian Railway Trilogy. I would also recommend Early Morning Rain. Edited to add that if you are looking to listen to Canadian music icons you should listen to Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen as well.
Gordon Lightfoot has so many amazing songs. I suggest you take a listen to a later version of Canadian folkie: Stan Roger's Northwest Passage, Mary Ellen Carter, Barrett's Privateers, Lies, Bluenose, Fogarty's Cove, Forty-five years. All absolutely first class. He died, tragically, too young.
Your voice is actually pretty good! You sang in key and not everybody is able to do that! Try the song The Last Time I Saw Her Face or Pussywillows, Cattails by Gordon Lightfoot. He has so many great songs! Liked your reaction and subscribed!
Good story telling, but I’ll always contend that most of the emotion that this song brings to the surface, (our reactor included) is from the melody. Watch when people listen. It’s the music that drives the deep reactions, more so than the words.
Gordon lightfoot the great Canadian troubadour . He has a way of bringing the most harden soul to tears . He was gentlemen enough to drop a law suit against the writer of Greatest Love Of All who stole 24 bars of this song to spare Whitney Houston's career a blow because she didn't write her songs. The greed people have today would make this type of gesture impossible . The transitional section from the song " Greatest Love Of All " that begins "I decided long ago never to walk in anyone's shadow" is stolen goods .
Good job Lhen!
