Hi Harri! I love your reactions. Thanks for keeping me entertained. When "I'll Be" came out many years ago, My sister & I attended a rock concert in Greenville, South Carolina. Bret Michaels (The lead singer of Poison) came on stage & told the audience about Edwin McCain's grandfather passing away. He then brought Edwin on stage to sing "I'll Be" & "I Could Not Ask For More" as a tribute to his grandfather (They were very close). By the time he finnished his two songs, the entire audience was in tears & gave him a standing ovation. I will never forget that night!

This song was recorded and released in 1997, and it stands the test of time as one of the greatest love songs ever recorded Highly popular wedding song, so is I Could Not Ask for more but that song was written by Dianne Warren who is one of the greatest songwriters who’s ever lived. This one was written by Edwin. Who fittingly heard a guy say “I’ll be your crying shoulder” to a girl in a bar. “Rain falls angry on the tin roof, as we lay awake in my bed” is one of the greatest metaphors I’ve ever heard in a love song.
I think this was written as a breakup song. IIRC the singer was dealing with personal issues and needed to take some time to get himself together and was trying to give some comfort to his girl with this song.

Honestly, the singer’s singing style gives me some faint Eddie Vedder vibes. With less saxophone and more distorted guitars and harder hitting drums, maybe Pearl Jam could do a cover of this?
