I still don't fully understand why Penner did this and I don't think the edit sufficiently explains it at all. from the interviews it's clear Yul threatened Penner with LOTS of maths :) it seems so obvious to me that Penner should have said "yes", told Rero that Yul has the idol and that they need to vote out Sundra or Becky.
I know this is from 9 months ago, but here's my take. If Jonathan doesn't flip, the votes would be Yul [5] and Nate [4]. Yul would be safe and Nate would go home. Now it's the Aitu 4 vs. Raro 4, nobody has the numbers and they could draw rocks to determine the next vote, which is risky. Another scenario: Jonathan tells Raro about Yul's idol and they decide to vote for someone else, let's say Sundra. Now, the votes are Sundra [5] Nate [4]. After Sundra is out, the Raro 5 will eventually have to vote for Yul at some point. The minority could then continue to vote for Jonathan until Yul is forced to play the idol, insuring that Jonathan will get voted out eventually. You could split the votes when there are only 2 Aitu left, but that strategy wasn't widely known yet as a part of Survivor. Also, Ozzy was a challenge beast in Cook Islands. The final 2 Aitu would most likely be Yul and Ozzy in this scenario. With both having immunity, Jonathan would go home. Also also, Jonathan was on the bottom of the Raro 5 alliance. He knew that. The replies have discussed the strategical aspect so I'm gonna discuss the social one. Yul was very friendly to Jonathan, and he never showed him any bitterness from the initial betrayal which is the mutiny. Yul also acquiesced to Jonathan's request by voting out Nate first. If the Aitu 4 had their way, they'd probably vote for Adam, the best challenge competitor of the Raro 5 (as was the meta at the time, you vote out the opposing alliance's biggest challenge threat at the merge). Parvati even gave him the nickname "The Godfather", trying to ruthlessly cut off everyone in a friendly way.
@@abcdefghijklmnopiss penner doesn't want to tell the Raro Yul has an idol because Penner already gave the impression to the Raro that he has the idol. That impression of him having the idol was like his security blanket. Also in the reunion the Raro said they did thought Penner had the idol at that time before the auction.
He did it because if Yul plays the idol then Jonathan goes home because they could vote for him and they don’t have the numbers to split the votes so even if rero voted for someone else back then you could play the idol after the votes were read so it wouldn’t matter who rero voted for they wouldn’t go home and someone from raro did penner knew what he was doing and he tried to warn them but they were so stupid they didn’t even think about the scenario and they were so mad at Jonathan cuz they didn’t think they were idiots and the way they talked about him was disgusting and I’m happy nun of them won.
The idol that season was super powerful. You could play it after the votes were read. What he should have done was vote out Becky or Sundra and then just vote Yul next by splitting the vote. Penner is just a sucky player that people like because he never shuts up.
What he should really do was to convince Yul and rest to vote for Nate(like he did) but vote with others for Yul, to get rid of his idol and sending Nate home. Without Yuls idol it will be much more difficult to control the game
I think he though that with this move, he will be back with the Aitu 4 100%, he was really close to Yul So he had a F5 deal and had a close and powerful friend in the person of Yul. Where as, if he had stayed with Raro, he was on the outs. Adam, Parv, Candice and Nate would have probably been F4.
Jonathan's and Yul's convos are some of the best discussions of pure strategic gameplay in the entire history of the show.
