The sentimental streak is that he himself found his soulmate in a human, Sulpicia, in Ancient Greece. He turned her after wooing her for a very short while, just like Edward and Bella. So he probably sees his own past in them.
His blood sister was much younger than him but he turned her too after their mother died.
His sister married Marcus (quiet Volturi leader) but when they plotted to leave the Volturi Aro killed his own blood-sister to keep Marcus (and his power of identifying relationships and loyalties) with the group. He blamed it on the Romanian coven.
