    I've been finding ChatGPT very helpful even though it does get things wrong sometimes. I even wrote a little Anki plugin to help define and translate my sentence cards.
    For a bit of fun try feeding it this prompt:
    Let's play a game. You're going to give me Japanese sentences and I'm going to try and tell you the meaning. If I get it right write some encouraging words and give me the next sentence. If I get it wrong let me know what I got wrong.

      I do that for him too. :) It feels good to know I'm supporting the channel. Know that TH-camrs get paid as long as you see either 15 seconds of the ad or half of the ad (whichever is shortest). Just in case you've been sitting through the long ads

    So what's insane is chatgpt can tell me the intrinsic differences between Japanese verbs for eg, where the meanings can be so bloody close. I asked my Japanese teacher what the difference was between 済ます and 仕上げる and it was difficult for me, because her English is just not at an advanced level, so she had no choice but to explain it to me in Japanese, of which I could not grasp even 50%. But chatgpt could explain the differences so well in English.
    Chatgpt can also compose sample sentences using verbs or nouns you are unsure about etc. Chatgpt is now like indispensible to me.

      Just tried out this feature of it and its pretty good, you do need to prod it a bit to get it to explain it sometimes. For example i asked it about 大きい and 大きな, and 小さい and 小さな. It first only explained the grammatical differences between the two forms until I asked it for differences in meaning. It also got it slightly wrong in that it thought 大きな and 小さな were な-adjectives and said they took the な particle when modifying a noun which would mean you would write it 小さなな犬 for example. Also it was missing a tiny bit of nuance from them but thats minor. Over all its a good tool for this, not perfect but good enough for most learners

    ChatGPT is very helpful imo: it can create you a study schedule, make text for reading and translation, make a test, chat with you and much more. The only thing one has to master before reaching out for AI help is making prompts because ChatGPT can't yet read your mind and anticipate what result you are willing to see. So, the best prompt for the majority of requests is as follows:
    Goal + Task + Context and Details + Role (for both you and AI) + Limitations.
    if you stick to this formula, you'll get as precise result as possible
    thank you Matt!

    I’ve used ChatGPT to generate example sentences using kanji I wanted to learn. You are correct that it’s not 100% accurate depending on what you ask but it’s pretty good. You shouldn’t worry though, your channel is immensely useful for learning!

    • @Algorhythmic
      @Algorhythmic ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @びちん / Bichin Interesting. I found the code it generated was pretty mediocre unless you asked it something basic or helped it out a bit. I found it's best at "pointing in a direction" rather than giving the exact steps to take to do something.

    • @dicegame101
      @dicegame101 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @びちん / Bichin I have chatgpt make stories for me in japanese so I can practice reading then I use amazon polly for text-to-speech so I can get some listening practice since I already know what is in the story. Works out pretty good.

    • @dicegame101
      @dicegame101 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @びちん / Bichin I have had japanese friends for over a decade and I am pretty familiar with the language (not where I want to be as far as fluency tho). I was just saying some things I do with it and the way I use it helps cement words in my vocabulary which otherwise would potentially by lost to time. Just saying there are ways it can help and it definitely is not a waste of time if used correctly with it's short comings in mind.

    • @dicegame101
      @dicegame101 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @びちん / Bichin And I can tell you like arguing on youtube or have issues with somebody saying something contrary to what you say. when did I say chatgpt is better better than anything? I said it helps cement words into my vocab. You should learn comprehension in english first. Reread what I said and tell me where I said it is the best. I said it does have its place in helping to learn, period. Don't know why you are so upset. Maybe there is some kind of medication that can help with that. Therapy maybe? To reiterate native options are best but chatgpt can help in other ways since I can be extremely specific to what I want like creating stories based around a specific topic to reenforce specific vocabulary and anybody that does what I say will get better at japanese. their intonation might be off but their comprehension will surely get better.

    • @dicegame101
      @dicegame101 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @びちん / Bichin Where is my lie? you are just talking to hear yourself talk. What cements words into vocabulary is frequency. That's just how it works. Same with understanding concepts when being spoken to. If you just don't know how to use chatgpt then say that and be done with it. If you are incapable of figuring out how or maybe you are at too high a level to remember how to learning a language is in the beginning then say that. Also my japanese is fine. I can have a convo with my friends and tell jokes that get a laugh and watch my anime without subtitles, that is fine. Maybe you should actually try using the tool with some type of honest effort instead of whatever it is that you tried. also you haven't even spoke to where my use of chatgpt falls short in regards to how I use it. you have just said "no" and that's all. feel free to educate the new learners as to why what I said is wrong in regards to keeping words in your vocabulary. I'll wait.

    Thanks so much for making this video. I'm always wary of using any kind of bot or translator technology for Japanese practice because I've seen some of the really horrible (and embarrassing) inaccuracies things like Google Translate is capable of. So it was nice to see someone I trust in the Japanese Learning sphere do a breakdown and pseudo-review on GPT for this.

      It is impressive that ChatGPT, get so much right, since it isn't even developed to translate text. It was designed to be a chatbot and personal assistant (think Siri, Alexa and, Google Assistant). If it were tuned specifically for translation, it would do even better. Just look at the new Bing search. Microsoft use similar technology, specifically for searching for content on Internet (ChatGPT was trained on content from Internet, but isn't currently connected to it. It was trained with data from 2021 and because of that it have limited knowledge of newer information.) and serving it in new more useful ways, like giving a short description of a longer text or comparing information from multiple sources, instead of just giving you links for content that could be of interest.

    It's funny that I used ChatGPT for exactly this reason a couple of days ago!
    I requested it to create a random story in Japanese to help me practise reading in the language, this is what it came up with:
    ある日、山田さんは自転車で公園に行きました。公園で、山田さんはたくさんの花を見つけました。その花はとても美しくて、山田さんは写真を撮りました。その後、山田さんは公園を散歩して、鳥のさえずりを聞きながら、自然を楽しみました。やがて、太陽が暮れると、山田さんは家に帰りました。

    At 18:00 it shows how the overbiasing of the model to be inclusive and polite is preventing it from doing its task. Basically they force fed prompts about that into the model as guardrails, but that means the model is likely to enter that topic even when it's not meant as the topic of discussion.

    This was a really interesting video, I'll add it to my list of learning materials for Japanese.
    I knew ChatGPT was able to explain terms you may not understand with programming, but I never thought about trying it with Japanese. I may even use it with English.
    And nah, I don't think you'll lose your job, while the AI will be able to do a good job, it wouldn't be able to beat your videos. Even if it were to catch up to your explanations, it would still be missing the production and all the visual parts of a video

  • @m_a_p

    Due to how LLMs like ChatGPT work, they will never be correct 100%. In fact we already are far into diminishing returns in terms of model size versus accuracy. I'd be surprised if there's a lot of accuracy to gain in the future with this approach. Apart from that good job on demonstrating one of the best use cases for the technology I've seen yet on TH-cam!

    It helped me a lot, specially making translations, which makes it frequently better than DeepL even, telling me if something sounds natural or not and if there's any grammar mistakes. It's not 100% precise, obviously, but it can help a lot if you have some fundamental knowledge to not end up letting it teach you wrongly. Till now, it only screwed completely one time, though ChatGPT frequently gets readings wrong.
    Being able to see the extend of it through the lens of a fluent person like you will help even more to know the extend and limits of ChatGPT :P
    By the way, what is the extension you're using when you hover a kanji to show its definition?

    Very interesting, in-depth video!
    When it comes to using it as a learning tool, I think one of the main problems with ChatGPT right now is that you can't verify the information it provides without external resources, since it won't (and if I understand correctly, cannot, because of how it works) tell you specific sources for the information even if you ask it.
    This is why, especially as a beginner, you have no way of knowing if what it tells you is correct or not (again, without using external tools, which partly defeats the purpose of using ChatGPT). From my limited experience (and this video), it gets a lot right, but not being able to tell when it's wrong is a big minus when it comes to using it as a study tool.
    Plus it isn't nearly as entertaining as this channel, so you're definitely not out of a job just yet!

    I still need to try it with langs but I've used in my work when I had some doubts (i work on IT).
    I wanted to ask you… Did you tried the Steam Deck? I'm curious to know what you think about it. I'm a console gamer and I prefer it over a computer mostly because I don't need to worry about upgrades to play new games (with the consequence of spending more money). Also I like the pads feeling but I still have some hand pain due to the long hours I've spent with PS2 gamepad which it was anything but comfortable when you spend +2h without stop. The good is that Steam has a lot of games and both Sony and M are opening their games to Steam… And you can get them in an sale with a really good offer.
    I love my Switch and I'll never leave it but… I know that Deck has a lot of games that'll never be available on Switch. + you can play on Japanese or any other available lang (unlike trad consoles).

    Interesting. I've stagnated in Japanese cause I hit the intermediate level where I can read what I want with yomichan and I've lost the diligence & curiosity to add more vocab to Anki and look up the small nuances of unfamiliar grammar/sentence structures since it's not easily searchable on google (or maybe I'm justifying my laziness here).
    But even more than that, my study so far has been extremely unbalanced to focus on the consumption (reading) of texts since that was what I wanted to do. For me to improve, I'm pretty sure I need to practice production of it to get to the point where I can think most things in Japanese. While I don't see myself going down that path anymore, I remember wishing having a language buddy to help with production. This definitely changes the game. Though ironically, if we extrapolate the rate of AI progress out a few more years, we can start to see why Elon Musk didn't want his children learning foreign languages.

    What ChatGPT says about the difference between 'wa' and 'ga' may be technically correct, but it's useless as an explanation to a beginner, because once again (I've seen this all the time except once) we're served with short example sentences where the topic _is_ the subject and therefore both can be used interchangeably. What I had to look long and hard for was an example sentence that contained _both_. Only then did it click.

      Its more just when the もしも is used its a stronger hypothetical than もし. So its often used in situations like 'if (thing that doesnt exist existed) then...' if you look at example sentences for it youll often see stuff like 'if i had a million dollars..' used with もしも

    Its really interesting to me that you hold such a high regard for animal crossing as a learning game for beginners. it is one of my favorite game series of all time, but, i actually feel like the language in it is insanely advanced. so much so that i actually dont plan on playing it til i feel extremely advanced myself. like just to test it i pulled a couple random lines from an anki deck with all the lines from the new switch one and in one blathers said he needs to make sure to 'eat lots of calcium so that his bones will really sparkle' etc. is this beginner language? xD i dont think so! even in your vocab series it was decently tough with all the polite and humble speech etc. i feel like the super advanced language use was actually what made me like the series in english so much in the first place. i think your breakdowns are super useful for picking what to use to learn with (pointing out about the gamescripts was a HUGE game changer for me for instance), but, the actual difficulty of the language itself, to me, moves many seemingly beginner friendly games into more of a extremely advanced level. octopath traveller 2 for instance from your recent video struck me as a very end stage advanced language type game even though it has all the amazing beginner friendly features because the actual language itself looks really really tough imo. live a live was another one i felt this way about too xD looks amazing but my gosh the language seemed difficult! but, once someone has advanced a lot then all of these seem absolutely incredible for sure

      @@spazerdazer8421 ya of course np. I think im at around 5 and a half month marker. But, ive been going at it basically like full time, so, i think im prolly a lot farther than most at this time point. Im prolly somewhere between n5/n4 ish although also my skills are more immersion based so they dont necessarily align w jlpt

      I mean to be fair, each series contains both hard and easy lines. Sure Blather’s blabbering is going to be pretty technical, he is a … well I don’t remember his title (biologist?) a highly educated owl after all, but it’s not as though you spend all your time talking to him. Most of the villagers talk about rather simple, daily things, with casual language. A lot of the topics you encounter are very daily things, so it will be generally useful language. You’re instructions are along the lines of “prepare everything for the town hall” or “gather 20 apples”, not “find the minster’s radioactive dynamite factory and disintegrate the cobalt bombs left by the intruders”

      @@yeontanseyebrows5588 lol. Fair enough. Its a good point. You're right, maybe I'll try it a little sooner than i was thinking originally. But, I do still feel like it is pretty advanced pretty frequently xD but you definitely have a good point

      @@Chille0 oh I do feel you. I feel like now I’m at the point where I could play the game comfortably, but I tried a few months back and also found it quite intimidating. I think a lot of it however also has to do with how dialogue heavy the entire beginning is, at least with New Horizons

    The problem with ChatGPT being wrong ~10% of the time is that it is very good at convincing you that it is correct. If you didn't already know that it was giving you incorrect information (for instance, if you were someone new to learning Japanese and wanted some video game recommendations), ChatGPT would have sent you down a frustrating path that could completely discourage you from continuing your learning journey.

      I think it seems like a good starting place and can give you ideas of things to research separately. Kind of like starting with reading Wikipedia before writing a research paper. It's not a one-stop-shop but a good starting point.

      agree 100%. even a tiny hit on accuracy to me seems like almost a deal breaker for a lot of things. soaking up even 1 or 2 or 5% bogus information seems really damaging vs many formal methods such as even just using textbooks which wont do that to you

    As interesting as this is, I can't help but be reminded of the words of advice Arthur Weasley gave to Ginny in the second Harry Potter book: "Never trust something if you don't know where it keeps its brain" (or something along those lines)

      Yeah I am skeptical about it because it doesn't disclose its sources. I can imagine it's still going to be useful for many things, like writing practice and giving corrections on language errors, but when it comes to anything scientific or anything else that requires complex source material, it's likely not going to be a credible source of information.
