Ragnar died and this was expected, he was a brave man because he "dared to question", like Athelstan, but he made mistakes, like anyone. He wanted to die because he thought he couldn't reverse what has already been done and he was also sick and tired of war. He only wished to rejoin his old friend, Athelstan.

Poor Ragnar. Died alone, forsaken by his sons, betrayed by his brother, couldn't protect his best friend from being murdered by his other best friend, lost his wife (Lagertha, his only true love), lost his faith in the Gods, lost his daughter to sickness and death, hated by his own people and blamed for the murder of the settlers in England and ultimately a failure. Such a sad story.
He accomplished so much, and you can see in his eyes how hurt he was to be treated like that, as if everyone forgot everything he did...

When he asked if his sons would go with him to the England and they said no, he knew that the only way to bring them to England would be revenge. That's why he went there, that's why such things happened. He was pure, pure genius

Even if, by the show, Ragnar didn't go to Valhalla after death. He clearly said he wants to join his Christian friend, Athelstan. That's why Ragnar wanted to become christian at least a little bit. That's why he said to floki "We will never meet again" and remained in silence when floki said about meeting him in Valhalla. Whatever exist in that universe, Ragnar didn't want to go to Valhalla and probably didn't. At least i hope so. His love to Athelstan, that friendship love of a man is just beatiful, especially in that times, when people didn't know how to feel and express their feelings to others. Ragnar were right above them all ;P

The thing I enjoy the most about this show, and especially Ragnar, is that he loves people. Not in this new, flakey, progressive, superficial way that society has moved to, but truly cares about the people around him, despite the conflict and bickering he may have shared with them. He doesn't love them because the show needs a token romance or needs a twist or thrill, but he loves them because that's who he is and because they're treasured by him.

It is true that Ragnar was sick, tired of war and tired of all his previous mistakes. Yet, the true reason he "killed himself" or well, the two reasons is 1) He wanted to proof the Seeer and the faith wrong; Remember his conversation with the blind man/seeer Episode 16 or 17 I believe it was. And earlier in the series he said "Death Intringues me" he wanted to know what happens once you die, do you really go to Valhalla? or does it end there?
Reason 2 would be that he wanted his sons to get revenge, in the same episode as where he had the discussion with the seeer, he also had a discussion with his son, Ivar, telling him to take revenge, but not on Yaella, but on Ecbert. He wanted their sons do gather a great army and break Ragnar's promise of peace, just like Ecbert did with their village. He wanted revenge on the man who made his people suffer, and killed their future. Not the man who made him suffer, and killed him.

may be, because ragnar wanted to die the way he died so his sons avange him, (he said "It's part of a larger and bolder strategy"), he didn't think about rollo because he betrayed him, so odin granted his wish by telling his sons and not rollo
just simply because he isn't a son of Ragnar. or perhaps Odin disagrees with Rollo's actions, and Ragnar is the true descendant of Odin whether if by blood or action not his brother. Odin chose to show himself to only the sons of Ragnar for a reason im sure.

Rollo knows that Ragnar is dead. It was pretty anticlimatic to be honest... remember Odin showed Bjorn and Hvitserk that he was dead, and Bjorn was talking to Rollo about it. Bjorn told him he had to avenge his father but that Rollo wasn't welcome to come for his betrayal of Ragnar. Rollo didn't even react to it. I thought that was pretty lame.
