  • 2004 Cadillac Deville No crank and no start! I received this vehicle from a customer of mines who had already tried their wits are fixing it. Unfortunately it was a nightmare more than a pleasing diag for me to shoot a better video. As I upload more I'll get better at this!     Thankfully, I have a great deal of experience with these headaches. It is almost always the ground wire that goes from the passenger side frame rail near the front to the alternator bolt. The engine mounts wear out, the engine rocks back and forth eventually breaking it. Usually before it breaks, it becomes frayed and you will get intermittent starts. Unfortunately I have seen this too many times.
    I usually get a 32" double terminal end 4 gauge wire from Advance auto and run the wire from the threaded hole in the rear head behind the PS pulley to the original bolt hole on the frame. Be careful to use zip ties to keep it away from the belt. It makes a good ground and the engine starts normally. The problem is the battery is under the seat and the ground goes into the body. Since the starter is in the valley of the engine, you lose the ground connection from the frame to the block when it breaks. It is very common as I mentioned.

      Exactly.... I run 2 grounds from each strut tower to the block....

    I had the similar problem, the security light was on , turn the key , it click and no crank and when it did start, the gauges were misreading . We took the intake manifold off , removed the fuel pump relay and tested the starter by jumping it and worked, we found that it was a bad ground strap were the starter sits. There are two of them. They were thin and brittle and corroded . We installed a new thicker battery ground strap in its place and that fix the issue. The caddy now cranks and starts and the gauges are working properly. All this for 2 brittle corroded ground straps inside the block where the starter sits.

    It is NOT the starter because when energized directly it WORKS. How can you assume it is the starter when you already tested it and it worked! If it works then must be other thing. Maybe the relay or the constant power that arrives on that relay. By the way the clicks you ear inside the car are much stronger noise than a relay clicking. Those clicks must be other things because of low battery... One thing is for sure. THAT'S NOT A STARTER FAULT! Must be other issue...

      Same issues and I'm thinking the way the dashboard stays lit up after removing the key that it has to be in the ignition switch itself

    My daughters cadillac had the same problem and the trouble was a bad connection in the box right under the fuses and relays We had to remove the box that had the three large screws and it had large plugs connected to the bottom of the box. You couldn't separate the box because of the three screws would not come out all the way it was made. We ordered and new box from a salvage yard and it fixed the problem. I thought it was the starter also but it wasn't the trouble is in the fuse box with the fuses and relays on it.

      Those screws will come out. There are little tabs that hold them in. No need to take them all the way out unless you are taking it all the way apart. It does come apart. You have to remove all the fuses and relays. It clips together. You can unclip the front one.
      To get the rear one apart you have to remove everything and drill out the 3 swaged inserts where the screws that hold the harnesses in place go. Not totally, just enough to get rid of the part of the insert that is expanded from the bottom.

    GO INTO THE DASH RESET BY HOLDING UP AND CHECK CODES.
    THEN CLEAR YOUR CODES ONE BY ONE BY DELETING CURRENT CODES
    MAKE SURE YOUR RUNNING AT 15 V 13-15 WHEN STARTING
    TRY PUTTING ON SEATBELT , DOORS CLOSED , LIGHTS ON (WORKS FOR LOW BATTERY)
    DO NOT CONECT DISCONECT BATTERY CABLE,
    DO NOT USE BOOSTER BOX, USE ANOTHER CAR AND CABLES WHILE YOUR CADDY IS KEY ON ENGINE OFF AND OTHER VEHICLE MUST BE RUNNING (THAT WILL CHARGE UP UR BATT A BIT.
    KEEP PLAYING WITH KEY (TAKE ALARM OFF YOUR KEY) PUT KEY IN THE DOOR , TURN 2X LEFT 2X RIGHT A FEW TIMES UNTILL SECURITY LIGHT IS BLINKING ,
    KEEP PUTING KEY IN AND OUT , IF NO CRANK , TAKE KEY OUT IGNITION , PUT IT BACK IN. REPEAT THIS STEP UNTIL YOU START
    FIRST STEP IS TO CHECK ALL CODES (NO SCANNER NEEDED) AND DELETE ALL CODES THAT CAME UP ESPECIALLY ABS IPC IPM (AIR BAG AND ABS)
    IF YOU NEED MORE HELP ASK ME, DONT SPEND MONEY, JUST MAKE SURE OIL IS TOPPED OFF AND TRANS FLUID ASWELL.
    CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL WHEN CAR WAS SITTING OVERNIGHT BEFORE YOU TURN IT ON TO FIND EXACT LEVEL OF OIL(WIPE DIPSTICK WITH TOWEL) TO GET CORRECT LEVEL
    THEN AFTER TURNING ON, TURN IT OFF AND ASSESS THE TRANS FLUID LEVEL
    USE SPECIAL FLUIDS ONLY
    MUST BE FULL SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL
    TRANS FLUID TYPE IS WRITTEN ON TRANS DIPSTICK UNDER TRANS FILL CAP
    I GOT 2 DEVILLES , A DTS AND DHS

      ALSO COOLANT CAP GOES BAD, CHECK RUBBER SEAL ON IT IT ACTS LIKE A 2ND THERMOSTAT.
      MAKE SURE CAP IS LINED UP .
      ALSO PUSH CAR A LITTLE (ROCK IT BACK AND FORTH), THE SHIFTERS ON DTS NOT DHS GETS STUCK. USE SPECIAL RELEASE IF YOU CANT SHIFT OUT OF PARK.
      I HAVE A DTS AND A DHS, FEEL FREE TO ASK, DONT TRY UNNECESSARY FLUID ADS AND CHEAP FIXES, MAKE SURE YOUR UPPER RADIATOR HOSE IS NOT TOUCHING HOT ENGINE BLOCK
      MAKE SURE TIRE PRESSURE IS ALWAYS ON POINT 32-34 FOR SUMMER 34-36PSI FOR WINTER DRIVING
      FYI TPS GOES UP BY 3-4PSI AFTER HOUR OF DRIVING.
      TRY TO MAKE SURE ALL VACUM HOSES ARE TIGHT
      DO CIGAR SMOKE TEST WITH CAR OFF
      DO NOT USE OILED UP KNN FILTERS

    I am not a mechanic but seems like to me the best place to start would be to replace that ground end on the battery.

      Bryan Black if it was really lose yes. But I was able to crimp it down to the battery. None the less this customer needs a new terminal. So yes you are correct also.

    What's the point of checking the fuel pressure if it's not cranking? If it starts cranking and still doesn't start, then fuel may be a concern. Fuel is kind of worthless if it's not cranking in the first place.

    it's a ground problem, happened to my 02 caddy same symptoms, after watching your video I came to a conclusion and used jumping cables from negative battery to engine block and the car started, so must be a ground strap to engine block

    Hey guys just an update on this, the customer wasn’t really keened on fixing the car. He decided to junk it after I was diagnosing it. Which is why I never really had an end diag for this vehicle. I posted the video for entertainment purposes only. Thanks.

    It's going to be the engine ground wire. ...run a good ground to the block and it will fire up..

    What can cause spark issue? Ground. What can cause pretty much every issue it is experiencing? Ground.
    Couple that with shitty battery and you can spend lots of time and money throwing parts at it.

    It could be the solenoid in the starter or it could be the crankshaft sensor the upper and the lower I have a 2004 Cadillac deville and I have that same problem and that was the issue

    Or the starter relay is clicking like that because a bad block ground is messing with the ecm/pcm. You checked the ground for the relay, that doesn't mean the ground for the starter is good. They aren't the same thing.

    I don't remember that body style having side posts. My 08 has top. Gonna have to look at my 02 again. It's been sitting for a long time.

    The security light blinking like that is normal I believe. It turned off in the run position. If it stayed on it could be an issue.

      I have a 2000 Deville DHS and I noticed my security light only goes on when I have the Valet switch on and glove box locked . It prevents anyone from getting in gas tank or trunk very helpful feature I leave on almost all the time

    ALSO THERMOSTAT WONT OPEN WHEN BATTERY IS TOO LOW, AND FUEL PUMP MIGHT LOOSE POWER, GAUGES MIGHT LOOSE POWER.

    Okay everybody listen, the problem to this whole scenario is the three bolts under the fuse box or should I say inside the fuse box need to be as tight as possible they are a ground!!! Tighten all three screws and the car will crank.....

      The front ,under the hood .. I tightened my down yesterday and my shit started right up bro. My wife distracted me when I took the cover off and I never tighted them back down.

      Those are not grounds. They go through to the three harnesses that plug into the bottom of the fuse box to hold them tight. The block to body ground does bolt to the body right next to the fuse box though.

    If the ground wire is wet with oil, from a oil leaking problem, Can be the reason why my car won't start? Is a 2001 cadillac deville, , the battery is good I take it for a test at Auto Zone , I'm trying to start the car but all I heard is a click the came from the engine ,

    Starter works when jumping manually, but you're positive it's the starter, yet have no idea why?!?!
    Not trying to be a dick, but this is precisely why I do all my own work and no one else touches my vehicles, except for very rare instances.

      True. I would have chases the ground to the battery. Cars with bad ground do the click thing and when he bypassed the relay it turned. So I think it don't need a starter. It needs a good diagnosis.

    I just replaced a fuel pump on 2000 DHS . Before new pump I had a crank but no turn over now I have a clicking start no crank, any advice that might be the next cause of no start ?

      same problem here ive replaced alternator battery starter and crank shaft positioners both top and lower i know the car will turn over as i jumped it with the fuse out so i know the engine is good is just the click

    That battery looks like it’s 100 years old even though you are attempting to charge the old battery the cells might be dead to the point where it’s not taking a charge. Start of with a new battery , test the alternator then the starter

    My deville did the same thing. Mine did 1 click but no start when trying to start, it turned out to be the starter. Another time when trying to start I get multiple clicks but no start up turns out that it is the battery .

      It can also be ground issues or a multitude of other things. I would try to diagnose more before throwing parts at it.

    What happened with the caddy? I believe I'm having the same problem but dont want to remove the intake manifold if i dont have to. So I'm very curious about how this turned out.

    3 years too late and maybe the neutral safety switch needs to be replace if you can start the cadi in neutral then the NSS is bad.

      He pushed on the valve on the fuel rail and it was building pressure.
      I would worry about getting it cranking before worrying about fuel.

    It's climate control. You set the temp and it controls the A/C automatically unless you push the A/C button. Then it disables it from kicking in. Setting it to 60 will run it at full blast. Setting it to 90 runs heat at full blast.
    I miss the turn dial for the temp. For 06 DTS's they switched it to buttons. :-(

      Check grounds first. As well as use a jumper wire for the starter relay and see if that makes the starter work

    YOUR BATTERY IS TOO LOW TO POWER THE AIR RIDE AND TPM, AND ABS AND IPC IRC , JUST BECAUSE IT SAYS VOLTS OK ON DASH, DONT MEAN NOTHING, IT MUST BE ON 15V

      If it says 15v it is running and the alternator is powering everything.
      If it is off it should NOT be at 15. Really it should run in the 14.3 range or so. It can hit 15, especially if it is cold outside.
      If it's off it should be around 12.6.
