Well, the two books, Mastering Microsoft Power BI and Microsoft Power BI Cookbook were originally written to be complementary to one another. Mastering covers topics in a lot of detail with a lot of advice focused towards enterprise deployments of Power BI. Cookbook covers some of the same material to a degree but is more focused on explicit directions on how to do things in a step-by-step fashion. For example, Mastering covers data gateways from the perspective of best practices, planning where the gateways should be located, managing data sources and connections, etc. Cookbook covers some of that but not in as much detail but provides step-by-step instructions for installing and configuring a data gateway, step-by-step instructions for configuring connections, etc. So, you can think of Mastering as the book that covers all the theory and overall knowledge while Cookbook is the practical, hands-on, here's how to do it step-by-step. For example, once you have read all about data gateways and planned out your data gateways by reading Mastering, once you are ready to actually install and configure your data gateways, you can pick-up Cookbook and it will step you through the process. One other area where it might help is that we included a lot of recipes regarding things that simply weren't available when Mastering came out like the ability to create calculation groups in the Desktop, DAX query view, etc. There's even an entire chapter on Fabric, which wasn't even around when Mastering was published.
