I was a controller working @ LAX in 1989. I would have been working 3:30-11:30 PM on the 15th (Sunday swing). It's a shame there's no ATC audio, would have been a trip to hear my own voice.
These were such amazing times in the industry besides the more frequent crashes. So much heavy metal - DC-10s and 747s everywhere, meals, movies, professionalism and pride at the airlines. Spotting was so much back then, lots of vantage points close to runways. Loud, exhausty jets everywhere! How I miss it. The industry now is so cold and generic. I’ve worked in it for 26 years and the changes we’ve seen are indescribable. Thanks for the memories ❤
I'm from the UK and was 7 years old in 1989. My Dad would take me to LHR every Sunday morning with a radio to pick up ATC. Watching this takes my right back to watching the same aircraft and airlines flying into Heathrow. Pan Am, TWA, Flying Tigers! Thanks for uploading!
A awesome video , I miss all the old and gone DC8's, DC10's L1011's 747's 727's ext; and the mostly gone airlines and cargo lines thank you so much for posting this!!!!
I used to live near LAX. I was 3 years old at the time of this filming. My dad worked there also. It's crazy to look at this and just think of the connection to all this in the past.
Pan Am was THE golden standard of airlines, well into the 1960s. To have been an AvGeek ( say it loud! say it proud!!) in 1989 was a tad unusual. There are probably 30 or 40 plane watching channels on TH-cam now alone. Mr. Bomar was onto something then, but like bottling water back then... who knew?!?! Great video!! Thanks for sharing
WOW! I could watch this for hours. I lived in the Valley at this time, just before I went to flight training. After 35 years in the industry, I sure miss those days! This was the "golden age" for aviators like myself. I once toured the old ATC tower seen in this video. Thank you for sharing this!
I'll take "Defunct Airlines" for a thousand, Alex. Very nice video. All those different airlines, and all those different aircraft (and more importantly, different looking aircraft). The good old days.
I was just at LAX and explaining to my friend how I remember the days you could escort your loved ones to the gate, or wait for someone to get off the plane from the gates. Those were the days.
I go waay back: when there was a terminal open on the east side of sepulveda. Or did I just imagine that? ;). They even had the old style vending machines for candy bars and cigs. Dark, quiet cocktail lounges were a must.
It’s actually interesting that almost non of the operators you see in this video are still operating today… Despite the massive travelling industry growth over the years… most operators just seem to be struggling to stay in business.
Count and see how many of these airlines are no longer flying. Pan Am, Continental, TWA..... It's crazy that this footage is as old as it is. Doesn't feel so long ago, that decade when these were all still flying. I came around just as Pan American came to its end. Still crazy how an airline as massive as that isn't with us now.
Isn't it funny how back then passengers would've complained about that "old, noisy fossil" whereas all we see is a kaleidoscope of 60s jet set glory. Kinda makes you think, will today's boring planes be seen positively in future? No
Wow how I wish I could transport back to this time. I worked for Continental Airlines from 1985-1995 and seeing these flights triggered great memories. I'm thinking to myself watching these videos if I was working that day. I would do most anything to go back in time there. Thank you for putting these memories up. I know it looks like you shot these at the east end of the runway. Did Clutters Park not exist back then?
This footage was not shot by me, it was shot by Ryan Bomar (visit his great channel) I just polished it up a bit as I am doing with a lot valuable past clips!
I actually worked for the vending machine services at continental back then and I could tell what type of plane was taking off just by the sound of the engines .
Thx for sharing some great memories. US carriers were certainly more interesting in those days especially with all the region ones like piedmont, ozark, Hughes etc
17 years too young to have even lived back then, but something about the late '80s to early '90s feels special. What would I not give to take a time machine to 1989. Yes, modern online tech included.
It amazes me how long these guys land. Float, float, float, looking for a greaser with no concern about the touchdown zone, which was probably just a suggestion back then.
It appears the protocol for landings has changed. On most of these landings, the plane uses up about a 1/2 mile easing it's way down for a feathered landing. Nowadays, they just go straight down to contact with pavement. The only exception I see in this video is the PanAm 747, probably because it needs more stopping distance.
What a great time capsule! Just think, at the very same time this was being shot, on the other end of the country, 17 year old me was awkwardly crushing on the prettiest girl in my high school! Lol!
I remember all that pollution. It was very bad. They had days where they were red alert days and they wouldn’t let you jog or play outside because it was so bad.

im presuming there was no Tom Bradley international terminal back then ?
Thank you, back when spotting was fun and Tri-Jets were plenty.
I really miss those great beasts. I had some great flights on them.

Appreciate it!
Talk about nostalgia. Thanks for the trip back in time. Priceless.

I wish this was longer. That's my favorite era of airlines.

I’m tearing up just watching!

Man those were the days! Cool video, thanks!

Never did that! But flew into/out of that place zillions of times - then got Ops to take me out on the field/runways.
Vids to follow.
This is what I love about aviation... it never changes!!! : )
I'll take "Defunct Airlines" for a thousand, Alex.
Very nice video. All those different airlines, and all those different aircraft (and more importantly, different looking aircraft).
The good old days.
Thanks for sharing this! It's amazing.
Same year as the Souix City DC-10 crash.😔 Great video! Thanks.
Wow! Love this! Thank you for sharing!
I liked the DC-8 at the very end. I can't believe they were still flying those in the late 80's.
This is such an amazing video! About this time I was doing the exact same thing up at the viewing area at SFO.
Came from Arline Videos Live 🤟🏼 Epic Shots on here great Video
Cool video, tnx for posting. Got the chance to fly on an elderly pan am 747 from JFK in to LAX back in the late 80's. Good times..
00:38 Casino Express Airlines. 🤣 I can already smell the cigarettes.
Thanks for wondeful vídeo 👏
Pan Am os my fovorite airlines off ALL times.
Love the Braniff 727 😁👍
Stubby FedEx 727 was adorable.
Great Video! I remember how loud these planes were compared to modern day! Also most of the Airlines shown went bankrupt!
Brilliant footage!!!
These videos are great! Keep em coming!
WOWO!! right out of the gate, an ex- original Frontier Airlines MD for Continental!! I really miss the old airlines, and liveries.
My first LAX inbound was on a Piedmont 767 in their original colors before the USAir debacle.
Good stuff. Thanks for the LTU capture. Flew that route many times!
I was just at LAX and explaining to my friend how I remember the days you could escort your loved ones to the gate, or wait for someone to get off the plane from the gates. Those were the days.
Definitely a trip back in time.
I actually got to fly on the Continental MD-82, TWA 747-100 and NW DC-10 a few times.
This was so cool, like plane spotting being watched on vinyl haha but so great to see all those fallen companies
Wow! Awesome videos! Brought back a lot of great memories!
I go waay back: when there was a terminal open on the east side of sepulveda. Or did I just imagine that? ;). They even had the old style vending machines for candy bars and cigs. Dark, quiet cocktail lounges were a must.
Prime era of Aviation. In this era, so many planes still used analog
No one is going to comment how there is actually a 727 at 7:27 lol!? Nice vid!
Good callout!
It’s actually interesting that almost non of the operators you see in this video are still operating today…

Classic LAX!! Love the haze. Where have you been Ryan!!
The condor DC-10-30 hand an awesome engine roar and take off.
"L.A. International Airpoooort,
Where the big jet engines rooooar..."
Very nice video with good memories. One can really notice the dirtier air back then too.
Smog
@@zarakdurrani7584 it was horrible back then, I mean really bad. Calif's Clean Air initiatives actually worked.
What we would not give to see these videos in full 4K glory.
I would not rule that out of the realm of possibility...
❤that PIEDMONT 767 in the last paint scheme
Wow. This was taken a day before I was born.
That Hawaiian DC-8 near the end....Beautiful!
Isn't it funny how back then passengers would've complained about that "old, noisy fossil" whereas all we see is a kaleidoscope of 60s jet set glory. Kinda makes you think, will today's boring planes be seen positively in future?
No
Aviation is never boring
They didn't waste time with "line up and wait"; they began to accelerate while they were still turning off the taxiway onto the runway!
Great footage thank you!

I actually worked for the vending machine services at continental back then and I could tell what type of plane was taking off just by the sound of the engines .
Now you see only 737 max and 787
I hopped off the plane at LAX
1:48 pan am wasn’t gonna be around for much longer :(
1991 was the end of pan am
Piedmont merged with USAir in August 1989
Thx for sharing some great memories. US carriers were certainly more interesting in those days especially with all the region ones like piedmont, ozark, Hughes etc
Crazy how things change. Most of the aircraft is no longer used by the airlines today. And many of those carriers no longer exist.
Back when you could get a nice hotel room at lax for 100.00. Rental cars 20.00 a day! Man those days are gone!
Pan Am, TWA, Braniff, Mexicana, & Continental. All gone now.
Piedmont too
Mexicana is back!!😅
Casino is gone!
Mexicana returned and began operations a year ago. They have three 737-800s and four ERJ-145s in service.
I was six years old in 1989 and Pan Am was still around.
I finished high school when you were born. '83 was a good year.
Seemed like back then there was more big birds in the sky and now it’s mainly A320s and 737s .
Love how dirty and patch-work a lot of the airplanes looked back then.
Oh man, I made a lot of those same comments back then on the spot. It's so true/
Time stamp is off. In January it is dark by 5pm. Here it says 7:10pm and it is still day light. 🤔
17 years too young to have even lived back then, but something about the late '80s to early '90s feels special.
What would I not give to take a time machine to 1989. Yes, modern online tech included.
With like an iPhone, recording inconspicuously and a ton less security hassles vs than whipping out a camera and giant lens!
That same vantage point today will net you 737 after 737 with the occasional A320. So sad.
There's no queue for this vantage point now
and so boring... The Tri-Jets and Quad Jets were so awesome to watch...and Hear!
It amazes me how long these guys land. Float, float, float, looking for a greaser with no concern about the touchdown zone, which was probably just a suggestion back then.
It felt weird seeing an airbus flying for panam
❤❤❤❤
I sure miss the 727 but was boring at the time until it was gone forever in passenger service.
Love it! I can smell the kerosene...
That;s RIGHT! Airport fumes..nothing like it!
Why did Flying Tigers use a 747? Wasnt it only a domestic carrier?
Was there 4 runways back then ? Thx
yeah, since the 1960s!
@ thx
Twa 747 , eerily similar to N9319 twa 800. It is not the same registration as Twa 800 747
Back when flying was fun. Planes were even cooler!
What a great time capsule! Just think, at the very same time this was being shot, on the other end of the country, 17 year old me was awkwardly crushing on the prettiest girl in my high school! Lol!
How about a Pan Am Twin Otter then?!
The 747s looked glorious and just plain right. Now it's predominately twinjets. I still like planespotting, but I look for those "older" planes now.
The Original Jets..just can't be beat!
I remember all that pollution. It was very bad. They had days where they were red alert days and they wouldn’t let you jog or play outside because it was so bad.
Makes me sick to my stomach seeing that beautiful Piedmont bird with the name in rust red due to the impending merger with usless air. :(
Where did the Pan Am Twin Otter fly to?
Was wondering that myself...
SNA - Orange County.
Resort Commuter Airlines operated the Twin Otters for Pan Am Express with several daily flight between LAX and SNA.
@@scottdevane2948 cool, thanks for the info--that must have been a 15-20 minute flight?...
I was working there in '89, not a fun environment, most of the other workers there were A-holes
alright man
LA smog was way worse than it is today
American Airlines is still flying that Piedmont Airbus
767

I appreciate you not giving in to political correctness. You still call it a cockpit.
