Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Helsinki, Finland, from 2005, and it was part of the "End Of An Era" concert, recorded on DVD, The singer here is Marco Hietala, bassist and singer of the band.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen] from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile).
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Hello again and thanks for reacting to my recommendation. I had a hunch that you'd enjoy this tribute to the Pink FLoyd original. I hope it has made you curious about Nightwish's original repertoire. They are indeed a metal band, but their songs are very melodic and vary a lot in style. There are very epic songs, but they can also go really heavy on you and the next song could be very celtic sounding or even jazzy. Even though you've just heard the vocals of Marko, who was their bass player until 2021, they are in fact a female fronted band. Their current lead singer, Floor Jansen, is fantastic. For all my life (67 y old Dutch bloke) I am a fan of Pink Floyd and have see them several times. A song I always loved and is on my all time playlist. Nightwish did not cover this one, this is the ultimate tribute from an exceptional band to a exceptional band. Nightwish, by the way, I only started following after seeing Floor Jansen participating in Beste Zangers. Nightwish and Floor now belong to my category of exceptional bands/musicians (Queen/Freddy Mercury, David Bowie, Santana, Bob Marley, Frank Zappa, U2, Cranberries, The Cure). And seen them all in my younger years, and many more.
And later on got to know Sabaton, Ayreon, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Kamelot, Toehider, Avantasia.
All because of me liking Floor and Nightwish.
Aye up john been few years since iv been to holland fella, seems you have a a few exciting experiences cant lie am abit jealous 😉 iv never been to a concert before just footie games. But im loving the journey of discovery of new bands / artists
As an old school PF fan (I'm 63) I was lukewarm at best when Division Bell dopped but this tribute is straight FIRE. I've also become a big Nightwish fan so hope you do more and use G Bardac's list as the links are verified. Nice reaction JB, cheers!

Nightwish is considered one of the best symphonic metal bands in the world, each song your favorite till you hear the next one I'm and old rock and roller fan seen most of the greats, this band I put up there with the greatest you should check them best live performances you'll ever see, there current female vocalist is the most versatile you'll ever hear God bless
Nightwish certainly did this song justice with this incredibly powerful performance. Pink Floyd were the first band I ever went down the rabbit hole with as a kid. Now these past years it has been Nightwish, they truly changed my life in the most incredible way. Just amazing!!! :D
Yeah I agree matey it was a very powerful performance and certainly did this beautiful song justice I must say, I was a bit nervous for this cover with a band I don't know , but straight of you got the pink floyd vibe and could tell it was going to be a good cover. This Finnish band (sorry, Vikings never lived in Finland!) actually has a Dutch, female lead singer...but Marko makes huge vocal contributions, both solo and in harmony.
Marko Hietala (pron: HEE-ah-Tallah) is a classically trained guitarist, bassist, songwriter and fantastic vocalist!

NW Army UK popping in for a great first reaction. When you consider floyd have 9 people on stage to create this sound and they did it with 4. Amazing.

Can you imagine he (Marko) is not even the lead singer of this band? He was just singing this song to give the lead singer (Tarja) a break and some time for a costume change.
Gilmore himself said at the time that this was the best cover of a Pink Floyd song ever made.
Now imagine that Marko is not even the lead singer of this band. Then it was Tarja, today it is Floor Jansen. The best female metal singer in the world. And now sadly without Marko.

And this is the biggest accolade you can get is Gilmore saying it was the best cover ever. i made you got the pink Floyd vide always through the song. was a great effort and tribute for me personally. brilliant job and their performance
Marko is an amazing vocalist and musician. He has retired from music, at least for now.
Hello there and a big welcome to the Nightwish Universe. You will be hard pressed to find other musicians at the same level as Pink Floyd - BUT I can assure you, that you have just hit the jackpot with Nightwish!! Nowadays they are 6 bandmembers - incredible musicians. Tuomas (keyboard) are known as 'The Metal Mozart', able to merge symphony music with metal and celtics. And their lead singer Floor Jansen are probably the most versatile, powerful, skilled and talented storyteller ever. I am not kidding! She is the only person I have ever seen and experienced, able to do Freddy Mercury, Ian Gillian, Ann Wilson, Sarah Brightman, Lady Gaga - with ease - she as that good!! Her voice and breath techniques are insane - the whole Nightwish band are insanely skilled and talented.

This tribute is an awesome one. Some says that it's even better than original. I don't know, but although it's much heavier and in a way meatier, l think. 😎👍
One thing of note is that as great a vocal performance as Marko is giving here, he is not the main singer of the band, nowadays that would be Floor Jansen. So I will let you imagine just how good she is. 😉
I love the song for the chance for the guys to show just how damn good they are. With stellar female vocalists out front, I feel that this is sometimes overlooked. I just can't come up with four instrumentalists that are better, that integrate better, that are this dedicated to the perfection of the song. Thank all the gods for great recordings because we won't be seeing anything like this any time soon.

My younger brother introduced me to Pink Floyd many decades ago! I am a fan of Pink Floyd, as almost everyone I know! I was skeptical when I saw they did a cover of High Hopes, but, the guys that make up Nightwish are pretty darn good at their job, and they didn't let me down!
New subscriber...and member of the Nightwish Army, Texas Regiment! And yes...I can attest to the fact that everything in Texas is bigger, as I am 6'6"...but I do have a cousin that calls me shorty...he's 6'9"!

One of the best interludes I have heard where the backing vocalist is filling in while the lead vocalist is doing a costume change.
Marko has a fantastic voice, and it was him singing that brought me to Nightwish with the track Islander, then a long gap and coming across Floor on Beste Zangers which rekindled my interest in Nightwish and it has been great musical journey listening to their performances.
Today Floor is undergoing an operation for a tumour, and I wish her a good speedy and full recovery.

The only part of this performance I don't love is the cinematography.
Of course, Nightwish did a good job but the original touches you more. David's slide guitar solo is awesome. A really highlight on The Division Bell.

@@jbreacts Things are good - no complaints. When I was in England a few years ago, it was in August and the English weather was quite comfortable. August in Miami can get pretty hot. Thank goodness for air conditioning.

You are referring to some other song and gig (sounds like Wacken 2013) - This was way before, from the time of Tarja (who was backstage, changing costume) No Floor there. Only Marco singing.

Yeah matey theirs loads i need to be getting on with, iv been wanting to do more rush for a while now tbh and zeppelin at Madison square garden live performance of stair way to heaven, also getting on with floyd pulse concert! Been loving the pulse light show. Dire straits live at nelson mandela. So so many to do and looking forward to. Going to try bulk recording so i can try edit abit after work
