  • EP 142: Using creative thought and automation to bypass human flaws w/ Bert Mouler
It was exactly 100-episodes ago when I first had Bert Mouler on the podcast. This week, I’m joined by him again for a second interview…
Bert is an algorithmic trader with a serious focus on machine learning. His trading decisions are driven purely by data, and he goes to great lengths to remove human bias and flaws through the use of automation.
While listening, I encourage you to keep an open mind and mull over Bert’s creative thoughts. Then if you have any questions afterwards, you’re welcome to post in the comments area at chatwithtraders.com/142.

Rewatching this for the 10th time probably, very impressed with how Aaron is able to come up with the right followup questions and steer the conversation.

Great interview. I'm still stumped as to why a good majority of the commenters didn't get any points from this.there are tons
    1) Look for newer markets with "not so smart " people on the other side
    2) systematize yourself to get rid of bias
    3) trading systems that are actually profitable can in fact be super simple. There are people out there with a shit ton of money and thousands lines of codes getting NOWHERE.
    4) see what tasks you are currently doing which you can automate
5)create additional edge by negotiating commission terms with your broker
The list goes on. Listen again if it sounds a bit abstract or google if there is vocabulary you don't understand. Stop fucking whining

I'm new to trading, but am a software developer by profession and am interested in automating aspects of technical analysis
Some things i picked up were the pros and cons of machine learning in this context. Things i noticed:
      Pros:
      -Remove trader bias through automation
-compete easier in markets where people dont automate vs much. Dont have to beat everyone, just a few
-Find correlations with results that would otherwise take years to understand or might never be seen
      Cons:
-algorihms cant take into consideration external factors like rumors, effect of regulations etc. It only works with data
-seems that you should still monitor what the algorithms are suggesting and dont go completly on autopilot. Eg one should understand the market and the sample that one is targeting instead of a blind, shotgun spray approach.
Anyway i'm sure i've missed more, but these are just some things i noticed.
I think i missed, many nuances due to limited understanding of markets and complex machine learninf principles

Thank you for bringing him back for another interview, I found a lot of value in the way he talks about trading opportunities and arbitrages. Especilly the relationships between different things he talks about is of interest and will definitely come in my summary of this episode, thank you so much, Aaron!

Aaron is deserving of high praise for being able to extract some golden nuggets on a sophisticated subject matter from someone who is clearly highly specialized.
It would be great to have some introductory, actionable, step by step process on how to begin to attack this as a retail trader.

Just because he's "all over the place" doesn't meant what he's saying doesn't hold valuable information. The man clearly does high frequency arbitrage trading, to exploit inefficiencies in market pricing and other attributes. He's really specialized so a lot of it may sound like jargon but try to grasp the overall idea. There are inefficiencies in many forms and he's challenging us to find them and make money off of it.

"You have to take money from somebody"... I disagree : if I open a buy someone who sells benefit from my buy, we can both make money if price goes up, then down .... as it always does. Price don't move from one point in a straight line...

are you stupid? do you not know how the market works?
money isn't made out of thin air, if you profit someone has to give that money to you.
this isn't some game where if you are correct you are rewarded with money, this is a game where if you are correct you TAKE money from someone who is incorrect.
