Will Wright talking at the 2005 Game Developer's Conference about 'Spore', which looks like it could possibly be the best video game ever.

      3 fun facts
1: prodedural mating would've been like that, but the creatures would actually start doing it after finding a good position, and you'd have to play a seduction and sex minigame along with it
2: to get new parts, you'd have to crossbreed, as opposed to befriending/destroying creatures and digging up bones
3: if you didn't befriend/destroy creatures, how would you get a bigger brain? just like what will said, you'd spend a bunch of dna to upgrade it.

That said, I do so much wish for a sequel game that gives us more complexity, depth, and even a bit more realism with the gameplay. There's so much potential that won't be touched because unfortunately EA plays it safe and Spore was a risk that didn't pay out as much as they hoped it would.

Maybe a kid who just wants to eat creatures would hop into the arcade mode where things happen fast and you can basically get to the final stage in a couple hours... or if you have a more serious player who wants to sit down with a cup of coffee and work on their cell creature who they've been slowly building up over 100+ hours can also get their satisfying long-term gameplay.

Could you imagine if the source code for this beta version of spore leaked?.... Sure its unfinished, but with our dedicated community, we could finish it the way jt was always meant to be before EA got ahold of it... Combine the beta and final version and create somethign beautiful

So I know that a great majority is underwhelmed with the final release (me included) and wish it was as grand as this demo. But what I don’t understand is why nobody, in well over a decade, ever decided to take the reins and make a new spore-like game?

People keeps calling any prototype like this as "BETA" when beta and prototype aren't synonymous. All beta builds are a type of prototypes but not all prototypes are beta. Beta builds are mostly the same as the final product where almost all features are done except testing and lots of bug fixes (which rushed games often skips). The previous alpha stage is when most fundamental features are done and focus on implementing new features. I also heard that this isn't even one real build but consists of smaller prototypes just for this presentation to demonstrate the concept of the game so this isn't even pre-alpha either.
That could mean that the Willosaur model could have already been prepared from the start outside the creation mode and is different from the one Wright created in real time. There's a fully modeled model of the exact same aquatic version of the Willosaur within the files inside one of the prototypes that could be downloaded at the Spore site. There are multiple concept art of Willosaur but I don't know if they were created right after this demo was made. As much as I want to believe this presentation is one full playable program, I think there's actually not much than what's seen here and would be extremely buggy if you don't follow exactly what Wright is doing there.

It's the original speed, I think Will just talks fast. Also make sure you don't have like 1.5x or 2x speed turned on TH-cam.

For those who dont know why it is so different from what we got, its because at first spore was thinked to be a really hard simulator, where the mistakes you made in your evolution will affect you for the rest of your journy, the way you build the creature would affect completely its possibility of surviving, you had to think its desing etc. Most of them were scientific persons emulating questions, but then other side of workers started changing spore, they wanted it to be simple, pokemon like, so they made the creature desing cute, the way you build your creature will not affect anything on its survival so you are free to build whatever you want, they did unrealistic and funny animations so it can be more likeble to kids etc. At the end they won, what we see its what spore was originally going to be. Kinda sad it happend xd

this is a common misconception, the "cute team" spiritually led by Chris Hecker was only advocating for a stylized art style. Chris Hecker was the main force behind the game's procedural animation and was pushing for creature designs to have more impact on gameplay, the team just didn't find a way to make that work together with Will's idea that the editor's impact on gameplay should be easily intuitive.

yknow the more I watch these, the more I realize most of the content in the early prototype is just early concept versions of the exact same things we have now, minus a few things that they eventually chose not to add

finally someone else who realized this, it feels like people let their imaginations run wild with the game before release coz Will Wright basically followed his vision for the game, it really didnt change that much, he literally says ”everything before space stage is a tutorial that is a simplified version of other games”

  • @atmoosed7318

Spore's prototype and the full release is not too different to me. All the game aspects are still there (except aquatic stage, we'll never forget EA). But I don't think the current version of spore is that much worse than this one.
Edit: Space stuff was cut back a lot too.

but, you gotta think about that this is from 2005, so 3 years before spore's release, and if they kept developing and going into this direction for the next 3 years instead of what we got, it would have been really cool

@@hanniaedithmartinezadame794 as will says at the beginning, this demo was "held together by baling wire and duct tape". it wasn't a playable game yet, just a demonstration of the possibilities. none of the game existed yet beyond the isolated setpieces we see here, the aquatic stage in particular had no gameplay besides just undulating around. the supposed perfect 2005 version of the game that EA/Chris Hecker/Will Wright supposedly ruined only ever existed in viewer's imaginations.

Look at Spore now. It's only legacy is as a casual curiosity for really autistic kids who weren't even born when the game came out, and furries. It's a fun and casual game. But it could've been so much more. I still remember the Robin Williams presentation. He really made the game seem fun.

    • @littenfire3563

    • @squaremantis
      @squaremantis ปีที่แล้ว +2

Spore wasn't made for furries or some shit, spore was an evolution sim that got influenced too much by EA to the point where it became a "cute" game rather than a science game. Quite tragic honestly, spore could have been so much more than what we got.
